Keywords:
Blues Guitar (20)Swing (28)
Description:
This is a jump blues arrangement based on my posted sketch, SHUFFLIN’ BLUES. Pianist, John Stebbe (ssstebbe...over at iComp) took me up on my offer to collaborate and, man o’ man, did he ever grace this number some fabulous playing. His HUGE contribution left me little choice but to come up with a more creative name than the generic one mentioned above. Hence, CRUISIN’ FOR A BLUISIN’.

As for the tune, I totally reworked the rhythm section, re-recorded my guitar solos, extended the tune by adding a break about half way through, then took everything up a half step, exchanged a couple of solos with John before finishing out in blazing blues fashion.

I hope everyone finds this tune as much fun to listen to as it was for us to record.

My thanks to John for his ‘grand’ talent and input on this tune.

Hardware:
iMac 15" flat screen, M-Audio keystation 49e, Pre-Mobile USB, beat-up Fender Strat Special with GB effects. GB bass and drums. No loops.

John is playing a Yamaha P-120 digital piano. The piano sound is "Grand Piano" from Sonic Boom Box, not to be confused with GB's own "Grand Piano." The host program was GB.

Software:
GB

Great life, joy in guitar & keyboard &mdash 02/15/05 - 05:16:34 PM
the drums and bass pale by comparison. In fact, they
seem almost dead compared to you two.

Excellent chops, both of you.

Thanks, atwood1956. Glad you enjoyed the song. My GB bass and drum work gets the job done, I think. It's definitely a step up from the bass and drum section I laid down on my Shufflin' Blues sketch.

Very LIVE!!! &mdash 02/15/05 - 05:33:01 PM
Well done gents! Really cookin'!!! It has a sort of an
intentional "distance" between performances, which I like.
the piano is wrapped around the guitar and drums nicely.
Very nice interaction and changes.

Very LIVE!!! &mdash 02/15/05 - 09:58:08 PM
Thanks, Alimar! I guess it's not often you hear a fuzzed out fender strat along side a grand piano, but ssstebbe really plays that piano with passion and skill, doesn't he? I'm glad you liked it.

Thanks so much, Slimgirlfat! I originally thought of going with a blues organ sound, but let that up to ssstebbe. I'm glad he came back with his piano tracks. I think his piano playing gives the tune an air of sophistication, don't you agree?

well as the mechanics.

Playing this tune over again while I'm typin and tappin:)
Your guitar is outstanding, great use of the fuzz sound.
Not to loud, yippie. That a breath of fresh air.
The piano is mixed very well with the guitar. Love that.

Sounds like Macboys in there somewhere :) But of course
he isn't. Nice going !

awsome &mdash 02/15/05 - 10:33:21 PM
Thanks, Tiler. I'll have to try may hand at some blues slide work on my electric git-fiddle one of the days. I'd have to head back to the wood shed before 'going there'. Speaking of slides, I think I found out why you use brass as opposed to glass.... I broke my two glass slides on my basement tile floor this past August. I accidently knocked both them off my desk..shards everywhere! I had those slides for 20 years! Never had a problem with them in any of my past domains. No tile floors in them, until this one. lol! I enjoyed 'Stinger', by the way.

nice work! &mdash 02/15/05 - 11:04:32 PM
You know, gudkarma, I had a feeling that the title would catch a blues lyricist's interest as yourself. It does have a lyrical hook to draw a listener in and a writer as yourself could probably write a catchy song around it. I hope you're not too disappointed in the lack of any lyrics and I hope our playing lives up to the title. If I come up another one, I'll run it by you and we'll collaborate. Thanks for giving it a listen.

Great fun. Love the electric guitar and piano combo, the
early rock 'n roll feel, and the cool Beach Boy looking
album cover. Man, if he played this on a a little 49e, that's
getting pretty nimble; more power to him! Nice title too. A
breath of energy and fun as spring starts to try and climb
back onto the east coast. Liked the key change. Too bad
you couldn't find an acoustic bassist to make it perfect
vintage. Great listening. Thanks for sharing.

smokin'! &mdash 02/16/05 - 01:00:45 PM
Great performances all around -- VERY high-energy!

At first I didn't like the separation of the instruments, then
it grew on me.

It's hard to believe that John played this wonderfully live-
sounding piano on a 49e! (especially with the changes of
range -- he must have been busy with the octave button!)

Your guitar fit well with the bass and drums. I'd say it was
a pretty convincing use of those latter two software
instruments.

Very well done, gentlemen.

Lots of fun &mdash 02/16/05 - 04:59:02 PM
Great style, great playing. Agree with pretty much
everything said here. Was thinking punching the treble in
the bass line would liven it up a touch. Great job, and
excellent playing of the 88's on a 49!

Excellent playing &mdash 02/17/05 - 07:37:50 AM
on guitar and piano. Fabulous.

Erm, about those drums, they feel a bit like they hang
behind the beat. Is there a way in GB to kick them forward
just a notch? I know Logic can do that.

But hey, with the amount of talent you guys have, you
should be able to find a real drummer....

This is on a KEYSTATION 49e??? &mdash 04/07/05 - 09:55:29 PM
Thanks, Margritte. I didn't play it on a Keystation. I played it on a Yamaha P
-120, which is MIDIed into my Mac, and is my main (OK, only) controller for
GarageBand. It's got 88 keys and feels more like what a real piano is
SUPPOSED to feel like than most real pianos!

I use a MIDISPORT MidiMan USB 2 x 2 interface, to get from my P-120 to
GarageBand.

Wow &mdash 06/18/05 - 01:38:49 PM
Such a beautiful guitar play! And such a lovely tone! I've
tried electric guitar a few times and find it way beyond too
difficult to get anything to sound nice on it. So I
understand that it must be a lot ... a lot really ... of job to
get it to sound like this.

Also I like your guitar temperament. Isn't that what would
be called snappy? Hot anyway. And I can hear how you
enjoy playing. Which also makes it so very enjoyable to
listen to!

Sing a song ... play guitar ... make it snappy!

Great Tune &mdash 01/29/06 - 12:13:48 AM
Reminds me a bit of Duke Robilliard. Like the half step modulation in the
tune. Great interplay between all involved. This is a keeper. Great tone
and playing.

Great Tune &mdash 01/29/06 - 02:52:27 PM
Thanks, stratcat51.

Duke Robillard is one of my fav contemporary blues gutiarists. I love his jazzy approach to 12-bar blues. His playing is really colorful and soulful.

Another fav of mine is the late Luther Allison. This was inspired by his playing. I used a standard pitch-bending blues lick (he used a lot) for the basic melody and wrapped a tune around it. Luther liked to play his solos high on the neck. I think it complemented his singing style.

You're right. The modulation is something Duke would do. I think that was more a subconscious on my part.

Thanks for checking out the tune and thanks for the encouraging comments. I appreciate it.
