Description
It's been quite a while I wanted to work on a song with my wife. This came one day when we were sitting together and I had my son's guitar in my hand. I started playing a few chords then my wife started to sing a melody, and the rest of the tune came. As it was getting into shape, my son recorded a part of our "jamming", which you can hear during the first minute, at the beginning of the song (which made a kind of a "making of" I guess :-)).
Catherine enjoys singing now and then, although without any pretention. While we were recording, singing with a microphone, pop screen, me recording on the DAW etc, was a little constraining to her but I'm really glad she did her best on this. I kept this first "making of" part because I found her singing much more relaxed and also it gives an idea on how she had initially envisioned the song (which I believe I failed to reflect on my arrangement later on).
While we were developing the song, she said she was thinking about an image of people singing, dancing and having fun on a beach, maybe around a campfire. So I wanted to develop some small fictitious "story" around that and started writing lyrics. Then I worked on an arrangement and recorded the guitars and bass, keys, and programmed the drums.
It was great fun and I really enjoyed playing a song, after many years, with my wife again. I hope we'll have time to work on some more every now and then.
I hope you enjoy.
I would like to thank Heidi and Michael Henriksen (http://www.songwriterz.dk) as well as Sigmund for their kind help and advice on production questions.

Lyrics
THE CAMPFIRE
She walked by herself near the sea
Alone, she wasn't meant to be
Counting steps along the shore
Tonight she needed something more
She thought she'd better head back home
She noticed she wasn't there alone
A bunch of folks singing a song
Inviting her to sing along
***
Come on, dance and sing a song
Stay with us and sing along
Come on, dance and sing a song
Stay with us and sing along
And you will see, it won't take long
You'll fly, free and airborne
Come on, dance and sing again
One more song, one more refrain
Come on, dance and sing again
One more song, one more refrain
We've been for so long on the road
With an old guitar and just three chords
***
They danced, shouted out, laughed and cried
What ever the sunset inspired
Forming a circle of friends
She only wished tonight never ends
She'd never felt so liberated
Forgot about everything she hated
She crossed beyond the barbwire
And burnt her fears in the campfire
***
Come on, dance and sing a song
Stay with us and sing along
Come on, dance and sing a song
Stay with us and sing along
And you will see, it won't take long
You'll fly, free and airborne
Come on, dance and sing again
One more song, one more refrain
Come on, dance and sing again
One more song, one more refrain
We've been for so long on the road
With an old guitar and just three chords
***
They walked together near the sea
Alone, she wasn't meant to be
He asked her to walk one more mile
She looked at him and returned the smile
She walked by herself near the sea
Alone, she wasn't meant to be
Counting steps along the shore
Tonight she needed something more

What a great way to start ... the unplugged realness of that beginning. Now the produced version is lovely. Catherine still has the original feel in her vocals and it musically flows.I would love to have heard some harmonies in the chorus. Love the flute part and the guitar solo. Very nicely done. The waves are a nice touch. I hear the wind on the microphone. Enjoyed ... my foot was tapping.
Cheers
