Description
A good friend of ours is an English teacher who paints in her spare time. We have a number of her works hanging in our house. The artwork above is a photo of one of her paintings done when facing south from our tent sites where our families camp together each summer holidays.
Her art group is having a presentation in a month or so with the theme: absence/presence. She suggested that I could write a song based on the theme and play it at the opening. This is what I came up with.
I recorded the song with one mic, in one take, playing my self-made acoustic guitar (my avatar). It is in a form that I am likely to play it, solo acoustic, at the opening. There is no delicacy in the guitar work because I expect to be competing with background talk, if past experience is anything to go by. To that end, I added in some background crowd fx, and was conceited enough to add some applause at the end… ☺
As always, all comments and constructive criticism welcome.
I hope you like it.

Lyrics
Light and Shade – Peter Bowen (2012)
(Capo 5)
[C] [Fma7] x2
[C] In the hours till break of [Fmaj7] day
[C] When the darkness holds its [Fmaj7] sway
[C] All around the [Fmaj7] town
[C] The shutters are drawn [Fmaj7] down
[Dm] In the absence of [G] light
[Dm] Shades of grey define the [G] night
[C] But with the coming of the [Fmaj7] dawn
[C] The day’s imagery is [Fmaj7] born
[C] And from all around the [Fmaj7] town
[C] Crowds of people gather [Fmaj7] round
[Dm] In the presence of the [G] light
[Dm] Vibrant colours shine so [G] bright
An [Am] artist sets her [G] easel
[F] High upon a [Am] hill
[Am] Impressions flood her [G] canvas
The [F] time is standing [Am] still
[Em] Shades of blue wash the [Am] horizon
[Em] Grain fields shimmer through the [Am] haze
[Em] Her roving eye captures a [Am] vision
All [Fmaj7] her senses are [G] ablaze
[C] [Dm] [F] [C]
[C] [Dm] [F] [G]
[C] The light is fading [Fmaj7] fast
[C] She prays that it will [Fmaj7] last
[C] The painting’s almost [Fmaj7] there
[C] A tribute to her [Fmaj7] flair
[Dm] In the absence of [G] doubt
[Dm] Her ability shines [G] out
[Dm] And in the presence of the [G] light
Her [Dm] imagination takes [G] its flight
[C] [Fma7] x6

NIce crisp guitar chords at the start. Relaxed vocal. Evocative lyrics. Good variety in the structure of the song. The "you and your guitar" simplicity works well for this song. Excellent work, my friend! You'll need a few copies of "A Lucky Man" with you at the opening after you sing this!
