Description
I had been looking forward to today for weeks. Who doesn’t love a day off with nothing to do? Those days seem so rare. So last evening I decide today would be perfect for a “one day song” challenge. But what should I write about? How about writing about that great feeling one gets from those rare free days. I wrote most of the lyrics while making dinner last night.

This morning I set about writing some music for my lyrics. I’m starting to think this songwriting thing is easier when I start with the lyrics first. With that said I was struggling to find a groove for this. I was about to give up when I grabbed my Little Martin travel guitar and slapped a capo on the 3rd fret. The Little Martin has a sound that invites one to strum chords with your thumb. It’s a bit like a ukulele but with six strings and in standard tuning one has a full range of chord voicings at their disposal.

I tracked guitars, bass and vocals rather quickly. I was struggling to come up with a solo. So I fell back on my old standby, which is to play slide. I tuned the Little Martin to open Eb (how’s that for a weird tuning?) and came up with a solo. A quick mix and then master with Audacity and there you have it. I did complete it in a day. I’ll leave it for you all to decide if it was time well spent.

Special thanks to Bob (five_extra_arms) Dorsey for keeping me supplied with all to realistic profile pics!

Waiting Here For You
words & music by alackbass

Slept in this morning,
Just a little, not too late
Drank my coffee rather slowly,
There's no hurry for me to wake
I've got no real agenda
No pressing things to do,
I'll just spend a lazy day,
Waiting here for you

No need to leave my castle,
Surrounded by all I need,
Maybe read a book then strum some chords,
Or just sit and watch TV,
I've got no list or deadlines,
My worries very few,
I'll spend a quiet day,
Just waiting here for you,

I may not be a rich man,
I'm luckier than most,
I could stay here doing nothing,
Or take a ride out to the coast,
Embrace life's simple pleasures,
While wanting not much at all
Don't need no one to visit,
I don't need no one to call,

The sun is slowly setting,
The western sky turns red,
There's many miles behind me,
I'm hoping many more ahead,
Today nothing got accomplished,
There wasn't much to do,
I spent my quiet day,
Just waiting here for you,

Nice gentle rhythm starts this off. You build the tune beautifully, each new element providing further interest. Love the slide solo. The lead vocal and the harmonies are perfectly pitched for the theme of the song. I like the talk at the end! A gem, Andrew. By the way, why do you finish things off in Audacity rather than GB?
alackbass said 408 days ago (April 7th, 2012)
Thanks Philip
I always appreciate your thoughtful comments.

I'm by no means a mastering engineer. So my approach would probably make a pro laugh. But I've found Audacity can help me get a few additional dbs out of a mix, making it closer to the volume of a pro recording. I use the compressor and visual EQ in GB. There's a few presents I really like. Try "Ambient Car Stereo" from the list of master compressor presets and "refresh dull recordings" from the list of master track visual EQ presets. I tend to tweak that a bit and back down the treble frequencies. On this track I used the AU Multiband Compressor on the master track instead of the more basic compressor.

Then I export an uncompressed aif file of the mix to my desktop. I purposefully make it a somewhat low volume aif to ensure there's no clipping. I then open the aif in Audacity. Audacity gives you a great overall visual of the mix. You can see places of excessive peeks that rob you of all overall headroom. Often that will take me back to GB where I'll adjust EQ or compression to smooth those peeks. On this one I used automation to bring down vocal phrases (sometimes just a word or two) that were peeking. Once I have a mix that is relatively even dynamically (keeping in mind some section probably should be louder than others but not excessively so) I'm now ready to use Audacity's secret weapon.

In the list of Audacity's "effects" is amplify. The first time I apply this effect I bring it up by just the amount Audacity suggests. That's the additional volume you can get before clipping. Then I repeat the amplify process, bringing it up 1 or .5 db at a time. You have to click the "allow clipping" box to do so. I've found my ear is a lot more forgiving about clipping than the computer. I listen to the track after each application of the amplify effect. I stop when I actually hear some obvious clipping and undo the application that led to the audible clipping. Than I export the amplified mix to the desktop. Audacity exports as an aiff which makes it easy to tell from the aif GB placed on the desktop. Then I use the MP3 encoder to convert the aiff to mp3.

Now I'm ready to drop the mp3 into an iTunes playlist, go to the iTunes file menu, choose "get info" to do the iTunes tags. That includes the artwork and lyrics so both will display on the iPod Touch, iPhones, and other devices capable of displaying the artwork and lyrics.

Again, others might laugh at my process, but I seem to get better results than I did when I just exported an mp3 form GB.

I think teaching elementary writing has rubbed off. We encourage the kids to write about anything. I can't tell you how many stories I've read about going to the grocery story with Mom. I guess I just applied the same approach in a song. Thanks for listening.

Double haha!
"I can't tell you how many stories I've read about going to the grocery story with Mom."

Yes. I've read loads of them! I absolutely will not allow the kids in my class to end stories with:

"And then we went to bed..." or:
"And it was all a dream..." or:
"And then we had our dinner..."

But they still do!

You know, I'm sure. :-D

Waiting Here For You
Good morning Andrew ... I love the lyrics and how I can relate to them. I'm a real believer in making music spontaneously without too much over thinking. A true sense of heart and feeling comes out and it's so easy to overwork songs with all the candy of sounds to choose from. So was there any left over pizza in the fridge? I had some last night and ate it cold. Real good song! Love the simplicity of it and that slide is so good to listen to this morning.
Cheers Andrew

One day is all YOU need. Love the sunny sparkle of this. Lovely changes and laid back singing. I especially love the right track electric against the acoustic rhythm. Some great harmony going on between the two. Melodically, it reminds me a little of a NRBQ-style ballad as penned by Big Al Anderson. Great stuff, Andrew!

Thanks Charles!
I've been focusing on lyrics. I used to start with the music then try to squeeze in words. I find it goes easier and more naturally if I have the lyrics roughly laid out first. So your kind comment about the lyrics was particularly nice to read!

lazy day
holy cow, your perfect day sounds just like mine.
I love the sound of the "little Martin".
really liked the layered instrumental breaks with the oh-so-sweet chord voicings... reminded me a bit of Van Dyke Parks for some reason.
Great song!

Waiting
What a lovely smooth groovy number.

Thanks so much for all the listens of my tunes recently. You really delved into the past! I haven't been too active on the site since I moved to a new state for a new job, so I was so happy to see that someone hasn't forgotten about me.
