Description
i originally recorded this song five years ago. for the last several years i kept thinking that i need to redo the mix and mastering. the original was too loud and peaking out, and i was still learning about mixing. it originally had a gazillion acoustic tracks, as i was wondering what a wall of sound would sound like.

anyway, i wanted to eliminate some of the fat so to speak. it took quite some time to go through deciding what tracks to dump. then re-applying better plug-ins, readjusting levels and pans and so forth. plus, i redid the electric guitar solo and the drums.

Lyrics
Forever Yesterday

she is always seeing ghosts
she lives to much in the past
voiceless way to be alive
shrouded by the mist that fades

CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days

in a haze she dances and sways
to the record she plays
a worn photo album she keeps
her own visual diary

CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days

sweet resistance in your mind
where you're lost in time
someone told you where you were
and you felt the sting
and it really hurts

with these wings you could have flown
somewhere never known
times and days stay in place
with your well worn memories

CHORUS
angel dreams of yesterdays
angel lost her wings
grounded in the remaining days
angel dreams

I don't know that I could sit on a song this good for five years. That says quite a lot about your high standards. And the results speak for themselves.

I like the dark and rather tragic lyrics. They really fit the atmosphere of the backing track. I like the eastern modal flavor of your acoustic playing here. As always you do a masterful job commanding an army of guitar tracks. A very impressive mix!

The weave of guitars work well. That must have been hard having to chose tracks to remove. Very clear acoustics ... nice harmonic pings at the start (I'm a sucker for harmonics) ... very cool when the electrics arrive. 2:33 with the synth panning around my head and that acoustic staccato minor riff is a nice interlude. The drums are working well as is that very well played bass. Vocals are melodic and well sung. A very good piece ... good thing you dusted it off and let us hear it.
Cheers

i dig un-natural harmonics and harp harmonics, i know i have added both in songs.

i did forget to mention that there are no synths used. it's a little trick i use now and then with infinite delay and a volume pedal to bring in notes as it progresses

Clarity.
That's what a good recording mix is all about, and you seem to have achieved your goal quite nicely by eliminating all the extraneous stuff that, as you say, just creates a wall of sound. With today's technology, we can have hundreds of tracks if we want to, but the simplicity of just a few always makes for a more satisfying listening experience--as it does here. That acoustic guitar soloing around 2:45 is a perfect example. It is so cool to hear each note and not have it all gobbled up by background "noise." Bass is great throughout, too; it just keeps chugging along ... oh, another solo lick at 4:08. That is so nice to hear. All in all, I think you've done a stellar job mixing this (or remixing it) and am glad you decided to post it. You've got a great song here and I hope a lot of folks find it.

i think all that was achieved in the original with the 12 acoustic tracks was just a large stereo spread. with refined plugins it's easy enough to achieve it with just a few tracks..... and a cleaner sound

thanks for the listen i appreciate it

Unique
There must have been a truck load of guitar tracks originally, Vic, because what is left is still more than most, but you have the skill to bring them in and out at the right moments and still have them sounding great. Sad lyrics and an unusual structure give this song a unique flavour. Enjoyed. Regards, Peter.

very nice sounding acoustic tracks, I like those harmonics too, there's a good mix of tones and feels in there, interesting proggy break. someone referenced Steve Howe... I hear that.

I love the arrangement - there's obvious thought gone into every aspect of it (the various breaks and when different instruments come in and what each does). I like especially what you do around the 3 minute mark. Excellent work, Vic.

So cool and man are you playing. Mix is refreshing and like you I have learned so much this last week and am remixing everything I've done! Wonderful Guits man harmonic as Gad says. Clear and resonant mix my friend. Just a real cool piece Guitted to the nines. Love the ending man! Vox clean clear and Sang Baby!

someone mentioned the fab four which i can hear but this also has its own identity, very well done with some great chord changes. lead very well done but with restraint. great acoustic tones. warm/strong vocals, very well arranged. some great warmth in the chord arrangement. i really like this a lot. has a professional approach to my ears. enjoyed this. cheers graham

A blast from the past
I don't know what my ratio is between songs under construction to songs actually posted on MacJams, but I know it's high. And I don't have particularly high standards : ) That ratio probably has increased by recording digitally; it seems easier to save multiple versions (or versions with muted tracks). I always mean to go back and do what you have done here: to address some of the old unfinished compositions that haunt the hallways of memory, where you know something appealing is waiting for attention. (Not unlike the "ghosts .. in the past" of this song?)

The other interesting aspect is the growth factor. Five years is a long span when you are in the thick of learning about mixing and mastering. As we know - MacJams has an incredibly strong influence on helping us to improve our productions. What to save, what to throw, what to add anew, from a five-year-old composition is enough to .. make an angel lose her wings.

Love those flamenco touches - I can see why you wanted to leave those in, rather than completely starting over from scratch.

ha ha, yes i know what you mean. mixing/mastering/recording is a continuing process. i still have a bunch from the first 2 years here that i deleted thinking i was going to fix them up and repost..... yet to happen...... plus the ones that never where posted. know it seems like to much work to go back when you're looking ahead to the next project

Great guitars. Complex arrangement works well here. Excellent downer lyrics. I like the synthed out Spanish section a lot, but the tune really shines during the verses. Another big hit.

the synth effect is actually a electric guitar. i ran it through a delay with infinite repeat and would bring in single notes with a volume pedal, it's pretty interesting on what can come about. and thanks i apprecite your time for the listen

recording acoustics....... way to easy really. the ibanez i used has a xlr output that delivers a much fuller sound then the regular guitar output. usually instead of panning the regular way i use a imaging plug in, that works like a pan but you can also set the spread for as much or as little as needed.

Got a very 70's sound to it ,especially
in the vocal delivery....and that suits me just fine....it's like a melding of the Moody Blues and the male half of the Mamas and The Papas, and then it gets nice and flamingoey (my term for pseudo Spanish style or even Spanish style out of genre)

Very nice indeedy ........
