Description:
A teacher friend here in Japan said "There's Gotta Be More To Life Than This"... he found himself in a rut with life and job.

That inspired me to make this "Loop Only" song.

I cheated a little at the beginning with the 'radio' but everything else is Garage Band loops only. They are ALL drums/percussions (well, 99% - I did use a couple of the FX stuff) BUT there are no 'Drums' in the song... (even the driving bass line is actually a Drum Loop)

It's in four parts:

Going To Work (riding the train)
At Work
Lunch Break/Finishing Work
Going Home

Eventually you are going to use fewer loops. ;)
Good selection of loops, arrangement and sound
selection.

The strange thing is, I never really used the Garageband loops until I came
here. It took me about a month of having the program before I discovered the
loops
and everything... Call me slow. Really. I bought the program so my friend and
I could jam long distance.Once I found the loops, I would only use the
drums and stuff to give me a beat (it would later be taken out because my
friend has a drum machine)
I found this site and was just looking around and noticed the 'Loops' vs. 'No
Loops' battle raging (as it has in the past) and thought What The Hell
This is probably going to be my last loop song because

They take too much time for what they are (I spend too much time
messing with them... I could create original stuff)
They aren't 'exactly' what I wanted
I should really spend more time with the family

I also think this song is the best that can happen with loops only.
On to other challenges---

Are you sure it's the best you can do with loops? ;)

It's all in how you put 'em together &mdash 02/18/05 - 10:34:14 AM
Okay, your forum post "Confessions of..." caught my
interest so I'm checking out your songs.

The use of loops is not "bad" (or good, for that matter) in
itself....but it's all in how you ARRANGE them. You've got
some good possibilities in this piece, but there's nothing
really distinctive about the arrangement of loops you've
chosen -- nothing to "hang your hat" on, so to speak.

It's sort of like having words written on single pieces of
paper, all thrown into a hat. The words in themselves
don't have much meaning until they are combined. It's all
in the combination....

So this is where you, the artist comes in. How can you put
these loops together to make some sort of definitive
statement? Do they combine well with one another,
creating new and interesting soundscapes, or do they just
sort of go, one right after the other?

Sorry to ramble on here. I guess the main point I want to
make is, maybe you don't have to give up on using loops
just yet....keep combining them in new ways, try to get
some sort of distinctive "hook" going, and I do believe
that you *WILL* be able to express emotion with them.

Keep exploring.

I agree. I will definately use loops now that I have figured out how to make
them less 'loopy'
I will just start putting my own stuff in there as well... you know, the missing
ingredient...
I just found it fascinating the feelings for loops when, as you put it, it's what
is done with them.
Believe me, I had a blast playing with them. I think everyone should try to
make a creative and original Loop Only song... just to try something different.---

The unfulfilled heartbeat &mdash 02/18/05 - 11:13:36 AM
Love the sense of heartbeat that goes so well with your
theme as well as the style of music. It's as if life starts out
in this barely heart beating dullness and then gets rubbed
by various abrasive rhythms, some which encircle and
some with distract, but none bring fulfillment. There is a
relentlessness about the sparse bass line and sense of
want and unfulfillment in the end, just as you intend, I
suspect. Very interesting track. Excellent mixing.

good feel man, you put the loops
together well.
Go out and buy a midi keyboard and
add your own stuff to the loops, you must.

Thanks for the nice comments
I have a keyboard with the works. The song Sight Words In C is
me actually playing (yes, I can play)I'm still
exploring the 'pre-fab' loops... I paid for them, after all ;-)
(And besides, it's
fun)---
