Description:
This little ditty is a colab between a fellow jammer frml and your truly. We made this song at the end of January in an evening, and I have recently re-mastered it. Hope you like this refreshed version of a song we posted already.
Featuring:
frml (Francesco Liscio) on Epiphone Dot
Sam'witch on Lee Oskar Harmonica
Harry Cockenchick on Bass
"Garbage Cans" Larry Carey on Drums
Fred Garvin Telecaster Rythym Guitar
George "hobo" Jenkins on Wood Flute

Arrangements, Performance and Composition by frml and u.s. ©2005

enjoy!

Lyrics:
Instru-Mentally Insane

Hardware:
I mac g5 and a iMac g4, Blue tube preamp. Green Bullet mic. Epiphone Guitar and harmonica. The fiber optic cable between frml's pad and mine. Plugged direct into the g5 Imac's 1/8" back jack with an A-daptor kit (1/4"-1/8" thingey). $50 Sony cans for recording, $70 pair of Sony's and little crappy apple speakers for mastering.

Software:
GB, j pack1+2 iToons. Used Apple share over the internet to trade .band files directly with very (like none) little issues.

really nice playing &mdash 02/19/05 - 12:04:00 AM
Fun and energetic, like a hobo on a bender. You guys can really play with sould. Great harmonica work. The solo guitar is pretty buried in the mix though.

really nice playing "solo guitar in the mix" &mdash 02/19/05 - 09:02:15 AM
Hey
that's more like it...thanks for the tip...I listened to the remaster in my
car for the first time this morning on my way to the office. I had it so
loud it would make a blind man see, and I noticed the same thing.

You are dead right. That smokin guitar of frmls needs to come out of
there more. I
think Francesco was playing awesome, and it's a shame I inadvertedly
stuffed him down into the mix too much. I want that guitar to tear my
head off, and it just isn't where it needed to be to do it. I'm gonna leave
it
like this for a while, but will get to it as soon as my next non-loopy song
is up and active. Thanks for the critical ear.

Your compliment aboot the hobo hoedown ruled. That's exactly what we
were going for.

We cracked a couple of sternos and wore trenchcoats with rope tied
around the waste during the recording. OOOHH drinking that sterno
burns going
down. Glad you hopped the train with us.

Still sounds great! &mdash 02/19/05 - 06:25:46 AM
To me it sounds like a much warmer mix. The song still
rocks! I agree with Peter that the lead guitar could come
up a little. Other than that I still wish the song were
longer!

Thanks for the kudos.

Yes I worked on the warmth a bit this time round. I added a wood flute
(for the sake of more drive and drone) and pumped up the drums by
doubling similar beats on two different kits. The kit I added in the
remaster had some brush work going on that added some needed
texture to the drums. I wanna iron that out more if I have the spare time
to tinker with this more.

Short and sweet (well, dirty sweet) is how we'll leave it though. It just
doesn't take that long for Willy to hop a train.

Thanks man.

Outstanding! &mdash 02/19/05 - 07:21:57 AM
This sounds like an excellent jam session. Would you be kind enough to elaborate on the story of this production? Thanks for sharing this one. Knee-slapper!

Hey thanks alot for liking it and dropping the keystrokes to prove it.

I'd love to tell you more about this since you asked.

Francesco and I got together at his hideout to try out his new G5 imac,
and officially break his cherry on GB and the mac (well with a witness at
least, since he hadn't seen the sun since the fed ex truck pulled away the
day he got it.).

We had gotten the idea for this song when we found Willy on the
internet. Ah yes Willy is the guy in the song art. (I've adopted him as my
own portrait for macjams as well) It was love at first site. Willy had to
become musically manifest in the world, and we figured it was our duty
to
do this for him. I actually look just like Willy, but about 20 years
younger, with messier hair.

We packed our pipes, like good little hobbits chatted about what we
were going for...and then laid it down. We took turns on the
engineering, and traded the cans and 'driver's seat' alot.

First we gave the song a spine with loops off of J'pack 3 mostly and
some favorites of mine from j'pack 1. After we laid down the skeletal
system of the tune, we finished our pipes, set our instrument tones and
levels....and then we went for it. I gave each track a musician's name and
pseudo personality for the fun of it (and to make frml laugh at this post),
even though 80% of this is gb loops. Hey it's all royalty free, so I can do
whatever the heck I want right?

We had a rough that night in less than about 3 1/2 hours. I went home.
A few days later we pulled the song out of the G5 to my G4 via internet
sharing.
Without elaborating too much, (With both our apple share's on) I type in
frml's afp address in safari, then type in his administrative password
(well actually a subpassword is better just to share the public folder as a
rule, but we trust each other, so he just gave me the big one) Once I was
'in' his hardrive, I just went to his GB folder, and dragged an image of
the willy.band file to my GB folder. A few minutes later voila! I have the
song just like it looks on his hardrive sitting right in front of me with all
the settings the same and all. In fact even the plug in's settings were
cool too and came with the file as is (since we don't have any non GB 1
plug-ins and own the same jam packs and so forth.

Next I finished off the first mixdown on my imac, and burned it. Frml
heard it the end mix here on mac jams for the first time BTW. Thankyou
www and macjams.

We had a great little jam session making this, and I can't speak for
francesco, but I'm glad you liked it.

We have the goal of making another Willy song (in the works actually
with tracks laid down) that will have/has a hip hop meets raw rythym
and blues harp and Santanish Guit box thing going on, maybe dobro
too. Maybe titled; " U
can't play Willy in the hood". We've been calling it 'wuuuuhhnnnkk' or
something like that, as our only way to describe it to each other. I guess
you have to hear it to know what the heck I'm talking about.( It has a
sound that busts in at times that goes, "wuuuuuhhhnnnkkk".)Not to be
confused with deadend's 'bonk'. Coming soon...

Enjoyed the playing throughout, especially the harmonica.

Thanks for the positive reinforcements. That's yours truly on the harp. If
you liked that harp, I've got juicier harp stuff on the way in the near
future you'll be sure to wanna check out. (Not that I think I'm the
greatest,
but I am aware I can blow the thing.) So come on back to Samwichland in
the future. Thanks bunches Mungo.

kickin &mdash 02/19/05 - 06:22:46 PM
lots of energy, pretty amazing performance by all (well, i
think the drummer is slackin a bit, but i guess a solo
would be out of place). the sound quality on this is totally
professional, especially considering how many people are
involved. i've heard all of these sounds before, but your
rendition is very well done. i really love how you
completely master the technology to do all of this & still
come-off as not knowing how to program the vcr. bring
on more insanity-this was fun

I wouldn't say master. But I'm flattered. Great hearing it from you.
Thanks alot. (I definitley can't program a vcr....but who can?)

Squelched &mdash 02/19/05 - 06:41:26 PM
I get the idea that you've been here before. Day Ja Voo?

Great groove you have going on here. A little rough
around the edge, but nonetheless, groovin'.

Don't remember the first version, though.

Do you zip-lock baggies to keep your samwich fresh?

I believe you have gained credibility by posting this song...
and "squelched" any doubts as to your "voice" here at
MacJams.

I you say so, it must be so. You have a unique way of looking at things.
So thanks for checking this out.

(Standing up tall now, and brushing the rubble off my shoulders.)

I liked your radio geek speak analogy.

great mix &mdash 02/20/05 - 07:06:34 AM
sounds really good. the tube amp works for a warm
sound, although i sure would like to hear an analog
recording of that jam! nonetheless really well done.

great mix &mdash 02/20/05 - 11:35:21 AM
So pleased you think highly enough of it to want multiple formats.

Curious though, would you elaborate if you would be looking for more
warmth/bias introduced into the mix? Would that be why you'd like to
hear it as analog?
I would love a follow up on those thoughts if you make your way back
here.
I was trying to keep it sounding as 'browned' as possible and not
'stainless steel', if you catch my drift.

I liked that little tube box of frml's. It's a little limited (two knobs
basically), but adds great sound to francesco's guitbox, and made the
harp that much better. I would recommend one of those (Blue Tube
single channel mic preamp) to any amateur looking to boost inputed
anlaog source signals before they go digital. It adds a nice hiss and
roundness, without too much of the bad things. It was a real value to
him and works awesome as a supplement to the amp sims of GB..

Wow! Great jam. You can tell you guys had fun with this
song. Excellent work by everyone on this track. Also the
picture truly sold it for me. The tune, the pic, everything
a stellar job as Diamond Dave would say.
