Description
This is a song I have to upload for several reasons. One is, that it was one of my very first attempts at using my new Blue Yeti mike and GB. Another is, that it is so flawed that I have to upload it before I have second thoughts. A third reason is that it goes back a very long time and together with a bunch of other songs constitutes my roots in modern music. And I think those of you who are my generation will recognize the pastiche attempt of the late sixties. Now, six months after recording this version, I wish I had thought of an intro, an instrumental break and a different arrangement. But it is also a good example of what you can do with a song and GB in an hour or two if you're not worried about quality, but just want to want to lay down a track. The image is a by a painter friend of mine. I intend to use several of his paintings as illustrations to my songs.

Lyrics
Friends – words and music by Per Hoj - © 1970

Every time the wind it blows
Up the street and it's getting cold
My heart it cries
Feel the first December snow
It's getting dark before you know
How time it flies
I'm walking down this street alone
This killing cold gets to my bones
And naked soul
I think back to the time I've known
The comfort of a loving home
When it was cold
I wonder why I ever left the place where I was raised
The place where I have spent my youth with friends that I have praised
The true friends I remember wherever I may go
The ones that always helped me when I was so low down

And now I'm here and I'm all down
There are no longer friends around
To help me up
I see you girl, you're smiling sweet
But you're not really what I need
I know your lot
One night's pity's not my aim
I'd better catch another train
Get out of here
Or I'll build up hope and end up blue
I've known other girls like you
To still my fear
I wonder why I ever went and left my friends behind
The friends that I had had so long the friends I knew were mine
The true friends I remember wherever I may go
The ones that always helped me when I was so low down

I'm out of town it's getting light
The sun is shining the air is bright
Stopped snowing now
This time I'll be moving on
Way out west just like the sun
And find out how
I'll seek the place where I can roam
I'll find a love and build a home
With all my heart
I'll come together with the truth
And memories of a lovely youth
May we never part
I know now why I left them they are all gone just like me
And there's no use in searching for things that cannot be
They're still the ones I will remember wherever I may go
They're still the ones that always helped med and they helped me grow – into a man

Art Exist and You Exhibit it well My Man!
Raspy and effecting Vox for real my friend. Such Feel you give us an almost nostalgic yet forward groove man. What an experiment in GB that came out so beautifully. Real Nice Baby! Lyrical Poet Spoke!

Really appreciate
all your kind words my friend. I've only been here on MJ awhile and I think you are an incredibly talented and fantastic bunch. Hope I can be allowed to share some of my music with all of you - and hopefully move into some collaboration one of these days. Per

You
remind me of Bobby Goldboro's Honey. Nice. Thanks.

You spotted it
That's what I meant. It is a real sixties pastiche tune. Goldsboro wasn't the only one to use the 3/4 beat and the major/minor shift in that way. I guess we are all inspired by what we hear when we are young. Thanks, Per

Cool song. Love your lyrics and the world-weary
vocal. Cool stream-of-conciousness flow to the story.I especially like lovely changes in the B part.

Thanks
for the world-weary vocal. I will treasure that and maybe not be so sad about the vocal chords weakening with age from now on. Per

I like the 60s vibe and the light 3/4 pulse. It's about the song, not the production. Charming melody and some very nice lyrics.

You are so right
It is about the song and not about the production. I think we all say that to ourselves when we hit the record button, and still we end up worrying about production values and all the rest. I take your words to heart. Per

Captivating lyrics, warm vocal, clean guitar playing and rich orchestration. I like it a lot!
PHBB said 364 days ago (May 19th, 2012)
I am glad
you find the orchestration rich. There is so much trial and error in it when you try out various GB sounds to serve as background sound blanket. At the end of the process one is often not so sure to have gone down the right road. Thanks, Per

Warm
It's a warm and honest song - it feels a bit vulnerable but I mean that in a good way. Your vocals are great in this song, brings out the emotions. Good job! Love Heidi
