Lyrics
Murder/Suicide
Words & Music by alackbass

Repeat your lies enough times,
So even you'll believe,
But there are those who won't be fooled,
Not easily deceived,
You had your own agenda,
It was always about you,
You want the shiny things you want,
There was nothing he could do,
I never thought it possible,
No I never heard it said,
A murder slash suicide,
But only one man dead,

You say he did it to himself,
But it wasn't him alone,
Things might have worked out differently,
If he wasn't on his own,
You took a good and decent man,
Broke his heart and mind in two,
I look forward to the day,
When it catches up to you,
I never thought it possible,
No I never heard it said,
A murder slash suicide,
But only one man dead,

In sickness and in health,
For better or for worse,
You didn't mean a word of it,
And that became his curse,
He tried to drown his sorrows,
He tried to kill the pain,
In the end he killed himself,
But you're guilty just the same,

So as you live the high life,
Know that judgment comes to all,
In this life or the next one,
You'll finally take the fall,
And when you look into the face,
Of the son he left behind,
May you be consumed by crushing guilt,
And the truth you just can't hide,
I never thought it possible,
No I never heard it said,
A murder slash suicide,
But only one man dead,

Really like those lyrics ... someone I knew ...these lyrics fit there story .
The dropped D tuning suites the dark feel of this tune. I love it in it's simple pure form. You've written demo and I know you could take this further with more instrumentation and production but why when it's working so well as is.
Cheers

I appreciate all the kind words. This one was all about the lyrics. So a big thank you there. I'm actually rather enthused about this type of demo. I've never had the guts to post one. Always recorded guitars and vocals separately. But trying to get a decent live performance is such a challenge. And I really had fun with the editing and mastering. There's a lot one can do with a single track. I think there could be more coming.

Andrew!
I was fascinated by the title. What a masterful balladeer you are! Love hurts. She drove him to it. He should have taken her with him. Sounds pretty much perfect to me. (Unless you want a little fiddle, harmonica or kazoo. ;) ) Thanks.

This one was all about the lyrics. So I really appreciate you went their first. A Takamine EN10C. What an ear you have my friend! It was a one track recording recorded live with a Zoom H4 field recorder. So I couldn't really mix, only edit and master. Thanks so much for the kind feedback.

Man you're in zone, writing-wise. What a cool song! Great atmosphere in the guitar part (is that drop D?). Your lyrics sound effortless and scan really well. If this is a demo, I'd say it's perfect, don't touch it.

Thanks John
Your comment about being in a zone writing-wise means a lot coming from a tunesmith like yourself. I've changed my approach to writing lyrics first. I jot them down with my iPhone NotePad so I rarely miss a line when they come to me. After I have a poem I think is solid I go to the guitar. I find the words will tell me how they want to be sung. There are even times I skip the guitar and just look for a melody a cappella and record that with the iPhone. I've learned if I write a guitar part first I box myself in.

Yes that is drop D on both E strings. Thanks again for listening. Your comments are very, very validating and much appreciated.

You're certainly on a creative roll at the moment, Andrew. This approach - peeling back the layers of meaning to reveal the song's story - is very effective. Clean, bright recording and deft guitar playing. Impressive perfromance!

Right into the H4 in stereo mode. No layering. I did 8 takes. Brought them into GarageBand where I edited the best bits from Takes 3, 4, and 8 together. The processing was a combination of GB and Audacity. Thanks for listening. I appreciate it.

I appreciate the kind words, but I wouldn't call my performance flawless. I actually edited the least flawed bits form three separate takes into one with limited flaws. I have been listening to CSN&Y a lot lately. I find Stills' and Young's solo work the most inspiring. They both have some incredible live recordings that are just vocal/guitar. So a comparison to those giants always feels good.

Full disclosure: I sat in front of my H4 field recorder and recorded 8 separate live takes. I then imported all 8 into Audacity. I listened to each and took notes of where the best bits were. Next I exported the best bits and imported them into GarageBand. In GB I moved them around and spliced them together, Verse 1 is from take 8. Verse 2 came from take 3. The bridge and verse 3 came from take 4. Reverb and compression came form GB master track effects. I exported an aif of the finished track and then used the Amplify effect in Audacity to trim peaks and bring up the overall volume. So I can't take credit for doing this in one take.

Hope you still like it now that you know the truth :)

Great
A first reflection is bout the guitar: Super nice guitar recording! It is not common to hear GOOD recordings of acoustic guitar. Even professional productions often contain bad recordings of ac guitar.

I too use a zoom (the h2). I like the results I get from it as I like what you get here. But I am keen to know two things: 1) what kind of guitar is it that you have? sounds really good, lika a Martin. 2) how did you place the zoom in relation to the guitar?

A second reflection is that I dig your song a lot! Has kinship to Stephen Stills like in late 60s to early 70s – the time when he was my great idol above any other musician (and I was still young.. sigh)...

That's a mid 90s Takamine with a cedar top. I placed the H4 about 12 inches in front of the guitar near the sound hole. I recorded in stereo so one mic picked up the guitar near the bridge while the other mic was aimed more toward the end of the fingerboard. GarageBand provided EQ, reverb, and compression which I believe dressed up the guitar sound quite a bit.

Thanks again for the kind words about the song. I've been listening to Stephen Stills' 1969 Demos CD quite a bit lately. It's nice to think some of that is coming through.

I had a Zoom MRS 8
about two years ago...the only problem was that it was menu driven and that drove me nuts and eventually I poked all the buttons through....temper and frustration ,but there was no denying the quality of the recording achieved on it....your song by the way is ace...has a studio quality to it in production ,content and execution.......very fine....

Thanks Chris
The H4 is menu driven, which would drive me crazy if I was trying to use the 4 track feature in it. But I use is strictly as a field recorder. That's pretty easy to do. Thanks for the kind words about the song

Hey this good! Great concept and story, I like how you gave just enough detail in the words to make me listen more carefully to them. Good job.

Thanks pablatone
This one was all about the lyrics for me. So I do appreciate the careful listen! :)

shades of
Cat Stevens in this. Really nice vibe, with solid narrative lyrics. I have some thoughts regarding how you might be able to take them to another level using something that I like to call 'constructed tenderness.' Like that line in "Atlantic City" where Springsteen goes all quiet and sings "put on your stockings, babe -- the night's getting cold." Technically, I suppose you could call it apostrophe, but there's also a shedding of artifice that occurs: plain speech that is rendered plain by contrast. Lines like that save lyrics from fading away into the music, and I think that's the only flaw in this song. I'm only making this comment because I think you're capable of even better, not because there's any problem with what you're doing. I loved the song as is (especially how you actually vocalized the 'slash' in 'murder/suicide'), and would buy it if I heard it in a record store or something. Great work.

Thanks so much Ben,
As a big fan of your lyrics I really appreciate your kind and thoughtful comments. I think you are much more a student of the written word than I'll ever be. I just told the story the way I viewed it. Thanks again for listening and commenting!
