Lyrics
i want more of everything
i want the world on a string
i want more of everything

what i want, what i need, there is no space in between
what i want, what i need, there is no space in between

what i want and what i need
there is no space in between
how could this have been foreseen
i've become a need machine

need machine

machine

machine

bury me
bury me
bury me in my own landfill

i'll keep chasing til the end
they say you can't take it with you
i'll be damned if i don't try

what i want, what i need, there is no space in between
what i want, what i need, there is no space in between

bury me in my own landfill x4

Strong melody and some very good harmonies. The mood of the vocal contrasts nicely with Steve's heavy guitars. Great guitar solo. Excellent phrasing there and a killer tone. All of Steve's parts sound great and build really well. I love the consistent and pumping bass. Great bass sound.

Stevo, I know the words off by heart, I sing it enough times. I am very pleased to have been able to share another of your amazing tunes, I realise this became a bit of a open book for me and I exploited all the space you left for me. Many thanks for all your ideas and observations, I loved playing over this thought provoking tune.

take care,

S

I don't think
you have to find your way: Your vocal is perfect. It sounds natural, though haunted as befits the lyrics, giving it an everyman's vibe. Doesn't everyone want beyond their need? The guitars and mastering are perfect, too.

that's
a nice thing to say, Char. thank you. i suppose everyone does want beyond their need, and for me the question is how much is reasonable... where is the line between happiness and self indulgence.

i appreciate the drop in.

be well,

Steve

Rhythm section stands out for me. Drumming is innovative, and the pulsing bass provides an anchor. Haunted vocals with the drawn out phrasing is a good contrast. The overall vibe of the song reminds me of U2.

hi dave. thanks so much for stopping by and leaving this nice comment. steve did a lot of work with the percussion, which gave life to the original basic drum loops i sent him. i love to keep the rhythm section in the pocket as much as possible, without too much in the way of fills. i'm glad you enjoyed this.

hi tim, always good to hear from you. this one took forever, but steve hung in there with me. i love his guitar playing and feel so fortunate to have him contribute; the solo is my favorite part to listen to. i'm glad you connected to the lyrics of the song. maybe a little bit of a downer, but i try to sing about stuff that means something to me. anyway, thanks again for stopping by and motivating me to keep going.

Cool tune dude....
But more often than not, wanting more will backfire on your "posterior" and either leave you with a scorched earth life, or you become a sad, pathetic cautionary tale on an episode of the dysfunctional TV series, "Hoarders." (giggle) Loved the music tho !!! 'Carbon'? Would that equate to your avatar? = Carbon Footprint? You must be good buddies with my Big Brother SmokeyVW.... ;~ D Thanks for inviting me over to your page, Bud. : )
carbon said 118 days ago (February 21st, 2013)
oh dear.
i am afraid you may have misinterpreted the lyrics of this song. they were meant to be an acknowledgement of my personal selfishness and a repudiation/renunciation of this attitude, not a celebration of it.

i am sincerely troubled by an attitude of ever increasing consumerism, and infinite growth economic models coupled with a lack of understanding that the earth's resources are finite. unfortunately, the only thing i can do is adjust my own behaviors and write a dumb song about it.

as for my carbon avatar, this has nothing to do with a carbon footprint. it has to do with the one element that is common in all living creatures. it is the thing that bind us all and demonstrates our interconnectedness.

lastly, i'll mention that i know very little about smokey vw other than my impression that he is a heck of a musician and seems to have a powerful intellect.

thanks for popping in and sharing your thoughts; it is sincerely appreciated!

cheers,

steve

Oh, no, I really do understand, I think.....
It's why my son & daughter, and most of their contemporaries, always have to acquire the latest (buncha "Gs" ) iPhone or "In Vogue" laptop/iPad, Big(ger) flat screen t.v., etc... , and will pay $6.00 on a way too fussy & complicated set of + or - instructions cup of Starbucks coffee, and waste too much of their paychecks on picking up dinner on the way home from work ~ Consumerism.... It used to be called "keeping up with the Jones' ", but now it's more like trying to keep up with the "Jetsons" (old futuristic t.v. cartoon series) ~ the break neck speed of the www. super highway rat race...., It's a wonder how over half of the rest of the world survives and still manages to carve out decent lives filled with smiles without all of that (convenience and technology overkill.) What was envisioned to save time, more often than not wastes time and productivity as well. And my ref. to the Psych term "Hoarders" ( a form of O.C.D. ) is sort of a strange extreme example ~ "You can't buy happiness"/or fill the chasm of want in a lost soul with an emotional attachment to inanimate things ~ "hoarding" is just an extreme example of consumerism ~ when what the human soul really wants to connect with aren't an over abundance of "things", but those intangible feelings of peace & serenity, love , and a sense of security and well being, which can not be bought..... i.e.. contentment with one's life and place in the world, something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. "Love" ~ the only thing we will take with us when we leave this mortal coil. The rest of our "stuff" goes in three categories .... 1) bequeath to loved ones,.... 2) Donate to Charity Thrift/ recycling Stores, and 3) trash bags to the curb or the local dump. : D My children have told me flat out ~ "downsize" now, Mom, 'cause when you "kick the bucket" in 40 ~ 50 years, we don't want to spend months selling your collections on Ebay & Craigs List of your "chatchkes", figurines, memorabilia, totems, and wicked cool souvenirs from your travels, and well crafted furniture that mean nothing to us ~ we just want $$$CASH$$$. Ungrateful Little Offspring! LOL (They might want to fight over my iPod though ~ there's a lot of really wonderful MJ's songs on it!!!) : )
Trillian said 116 days ago (February 24th, 2013)
But I may have been somewhat wrong
about the definition of carbon vs. "Carbon Footprint" ~ I was being too broad thinking carbon footprint referred to the waste of natural resources and not just greenhouse gases ~ you know, like strip mining, the deforestation of the timber industry, the over-consumption of non-renewable natural resources (Did you ever see that rather "rough" movie a long while back called "Water World" with Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper? "Go Juice" (fossil fuel) ~ a sort of Ayn Rand (author) Sci-Fi movie adaption ( If 'this' situation exists today, what might be the extreme extrapolation of the outcome? Hmmmm!...) of hope for the human race, in the form of a rare human child's innocence, and the only few adults left on earth, who find each other and their moral consciences compass again through her beautiful soul, and therefor the triumph of the goodness in the human spirit, and the return to love and community that they are willing to fight to the death to save at the last gasp of the good that lives in all of us at 'The End Of The World'. I liked it better than the "Mad Max" movies with Mel Gibson ~ "Waterworld" had a happier and more hopeful ending that countered the theory that the human race would not end with a Bang!, or a Whimper; humankind's extinction by its own greedy hands; our own hubris becoming the architect of our slow extinction becoming the victims of our own excesses ~ but 'Waterworld' ended with hope and the possibility that even with the human race's shortsightedness, we are made in God's image, and each of us have it in us to muster the courage to change the direction of our planet's fate, one committed human soul at a time helping each other out of love to succeed at being worthy of the life God gave us.... Ahhh! Crap! Too Much Existential Belly Button Lint! Huh!?! Jeepers Creepers! Will I ever learn? Geeze Louise! : ) honest. I'm only offering my thoughts on over-consumption and its cost to us all. Please don't take offense, Steve ~ none was inferred or intended. : ) I thought your song was great and very insightful. Wish I had your talent for brevity (lyrics) ;~ P : )
