Description
The title is something I heard Jerry Quinn say a while back. It was how a good friend described him after he told her a somewhat dirty joke (I forget the joke so don’t ask). I had never heard the phrase “sacred and profane” before. But according to Wikipedia it is the title of a novel by Faye Kellerman, an oil painting by Titian, a silent film produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures, and a collection of 'Eight Medieval Lyrics' for unaccompanied voices in five parts (SSATB) composed by Benjamin Britten. Okay, but it was new to me. Around that same time I did some thinking on the subject of good intentions and less than desirable outcomes. It all seemed to fit so I went with it.

During the last week of school the music teacher I replaced returned some items she had borrowed from the music room. Among the items she delivered was a Samson C01U USB mic. I used it to record all the instruments and vocals on this track.

One of the other items she returned was a vintage Silvertone lap steel that had been donated to the school years earlier. Just looking at it made my heart thump. After much trial and error I came up with a concept for how to use it in this song. By playing it through my Line6 Spider amp I was able to use the amp’s foot controller, specifically the volume pedal to produce the volume swells.

As always, many thanks to any who take the time to listen to my humble efforts. Know that I am very grateful.

Lyrics
Sacred & Profane
Words & Music by alackbass

Did I make things better?
Did I make them worse?
Can't tell the difference,
A blessing or a curse,
Perfect intentions,
An imperfect man,
When the future's hidden,
It's awfully hard to plan,
Hard to take credit,
Easy to take blame,
When the choices you make.
Are both sacred and profane!

Do I try to fix it?
Or just leave it be?
There's no right answer,
None that I can see,
Try to hide my feelings,
Try to shield my heart,
There's no avoiding,
This will leave a mark
Hard to take credit,
Easy to take blame,
When the choices you make.
Are both sacred and profane!

Did I do it for me?
Or was it all for you?
Did I always know this?
And ignored the truth,
Should i just do nothing?
What could I do?
Still you'll have to choose something,
When your choices are few,
Hard to take credit,
Easy to take blame,
When the choices you make.
Are both sacred and profane!
Hard to take credit,
Easy to take blame,
When the choices you make.
Are both sacred and profane!

Cool !
I love the slide guitar ! I was working on something trying to use a bottleneck and distortion guitar but it's not working out :-) Never worked out for me, but I love the sound !

So nicely done Andrew, another great song I thoroughly enjoyed.

Sacred and profane
There's a lot in life that is of the "on the one hand, on the other hand" variety (yin and yang come to mind) and your lyrics contain the angst that goes with that situation. Your usual clear, clean, dextrous guitar playing is again in evidence, with the delightful addition of the lap steel which has a sort of "wind on the prairie" eeriness to it that complements the intimate vocal perfectly. Again, thanks for the download, Andrew!

Nicely done! I like the slide guitar in the background embellishing this fine piece. I would have made the mistake of trying to force some drum loops into this piece but it's really good without drums.

Excellent lyrics Andrew ... the haunting steel, the power of simplicity is what makes this all work. I,m always impressed with your mixes. And you are using garageband? The chorus is catchy. It ended and I wanted more.

Hey Andrew, I really like that slide guitar in the background - gives this tune a real melancholy feel, and it gets your attention immediately. And you don't play it in a conventional way - I wouldn't necessarily think it was a slide guitar at all. Like this song a lot, especially the mood you created - nice work!

I wasn't sure about including the steel in the intro. Your comments assured me it was probably a good idea. There were parts I thought it almost violin like. Then other times I thought I came too close to whale song. Either way, I guess not too bad for a first attempt. Thanks for listening friend. It's always appreciated.

Wow, a lot to think on
and a really fine recording with a minimal set up. The steel lap guitar really adds a lot to the final product.

I kind of think that your set up of the lyrics, "hard to take credit, easy to take blame" show the kind of person you are. That line could go the opposite - "easy to take credit, hard to take blame" - for a lot of folks.

Definitely more sacred than profane
Has the feel of a Jonny Cash song, only softer. Great songwriting, the guitar is recorded beautifully! Such clarity and depth - this song could easily be twice the length. In fact I hope you'll post that version. LIstened to it twice just to proof my point ;)

Very soothing to listen to. Really like this kind of music, great post.

I just didn't have more for this one. An early attempt included a verse section for an instrumental solo. But when I tried to put in leads on either electric or acoustic I just didn't feel I was saying anything. Had I discovered the lap steel sound earlier I could have used that. But by then I had committed to the shorter form. I figured I'd either leave them wanting more or get out before I overstayed my welcome :)

Thanks once again for the thoughtful and supportive feedback! it's always appreciated!

The lap steel
is a haunting addition to the piece, which is very good.I did not realise at first that it was the lap steel making the swells and falls ,I was expecting something higher ,it works well does it not ?

I have been trying to develop and improve a slide technique and some one suggested the spark plug socket out of a socket set.....it bloody works as well....seems the heavier the slide the better the tone.

Great song as ever, and interesting background info.

Cheers

Jarvoid

I'm still experimenting with tuning the lap steel. I may never settle on a specific tuning but rather go with whatever the song needs. Here I tuned it as a standard guitar a whole step higher. I also think drenching it volume swells, reverb, and delay masked the basic character of the instrument.

I used a standard lap steel bar that was in the case with the instrument. For slide on the electric and acoustic guitars I prefer ceramic slides. They just seem to feel good.

As always, thanks for listening and for leaving such detailed and thoughtful comments.

bravo, brother
quietly powerful
sweet slidy sounds
that's a wonderful vocal melody, Andrew
beautiful chord progression - love those touches of poignancy
excellent ethereal slides between verses!
i could go for an additional instrumental voice at :59 and 1:49 to gimme a little build - tho the slides there are nice.
darn good harmony at the second chorus - good singing all around. and a darn fine mix, to boot. i liked this a lot, but have a little aftertaste of the idea of another instrumental voice used as a sonic cornstarch. those are some of the hardest hitting lyrics i've ever seen here. lyrics are the last on my list of what i hear - first it's progression, then vocal melody, and lastly, the L word. so i didn't hear them in my listen, but reading them, i'm moved to tell you: YOU MOVED ME. i can hear why this is #1. enjoyed being moved - Anne

I really appreciate the careful listen and thoughtful comments. I toyed with different arrangement ideas before settling on this one. I considered a full band at one end of the spectrum and just a live vocal/acoustic recording on the other end.

Your comment about the order you hear the elements was very interesting. My last several posts (those that I wrote) started with the lyrics. I've found the lyrics will guide me. They almost tell me how they want to be sung making the entire process so much easier (for me anyway).

When that dawned on me I also became aware of all the great songs I've heard here. Often I'm so impressed by the production, arranging, and performances that I miss the lyrics altogether. That realization about my own listen habits led me to the belief that if I want the listener to notice the lyrics that inspired the entire song, those lyrics are best served by placing them in a sparse arrangement. Fewer distractions :)

Thanks again! When a talent like yourself leaves such kind words, it's incredibly validating!

The stripped-down approach works so well on this one...less is more! I love that lap steel, great idea to use the volume pedal... I would definitely be tempted to sign that instrument out permanently :)

On a similar theme, I would recommend checking out Debussy's "Danse Sacree et Profane" - really wonderful pieces...
