Hey.... glad a fellow rocker likes it. It's Hard Rock, not metal.

Kinda quiet on my ibook here. Gotta bust out the woofers for this one,
and the 1/16" of an inch speakers in this ibook sound like a mouse
farting in the woods.

And an anus is far more useful of a thing than you give it credit for.

Thanks for the keystrokes.

Blues Samwich with a side of cowbell. &mdash 02/21/05 - 06:05:08 AM
Samwich- nice song here! Groovy bass line, biting guitar
and the harp just cuts right to the bone! Great mix!

Heavy Metal? Must be a reference to the cowbell.

It's only heavy metal if you tried to carry all that gear to the car.

It's hard rock, if your a blues purist I s'pose. Thanks for letting it do that
thing that it did to your eardrums. And thatks for taking the time to
keystroke me. Rock on brother man.

I almost called it "ODE TO COWBELL GROOVE #1".

I had to make sure that loop was in there, unsullied, unpenciled and just
like it is on 10 million macs around the world.

Thanks for takin a ride with the Samwich.

bluesy I think... &mdash 02/21/05 - 08:43:59 PM
This is great - has a very live feel to it. Makes me wish I
could play a guitar instead of synthin them! Might be
worth tweaking the mix a bit but don't do too much to it!
Once you overprocess a jam..well it isn't any more. Never
heard of an electric harmonica before...if you spit too
much does it zap you? :)

"...if you spit too
much does it zap you?"

You bet. It's highly juiced up. I barely have to blow or suck to make any
sound. Can you hear breathing?

Thanks for the pointer. I appreciate the note.

This is blues rock. Cool harmonica. You have bongos for
what? The drumming got boring need some fills. Cool
guitar playing.

Hey-
Great criticsms. These are the kinda things i like to hear. I think I get
what you're saying.

You're basically likin the blues edge to stay bluesy, and want to trim
down to pure blues to make this song more appealing. Bongos on a
blues song? (bad taste?) Well I guess that's why I didn't call it blues
myself in spite of the feeling it imparts.

I can admit to taking about 10 minutes to make that drum track, yes. It's
fairly unmodified GB loops. I just plotted out 12 bars, and looped it 20
times for the most part. I did a similar thing with the bass. I just pulled
string on the bass a couple of twelve bars, and looped it out. The hand
drums (bongo and conga blend) were added for exactly the point you
make, the drums are boring and the rythym never goes anywhere. I was
going for the 'hotsauce on anything tastes better" effect, by adding the
bongos.
Now that I know you're paying attention to my speedily arranged diddler,
and you're willing to say something honestly.....I think it would be sweet
if you
would say whether the general portions of this song would be worth
boiling down and fine tuning. Specifically, what would you keep, what
would you throw away. I'd even send you the .band file if you wanta take
a stab at slicing it up and mixing it down, and changing the drums
around. Have at it if you're down.

As is, the tune is more or less just a guy fearlessly noodling around in
his basement to a lunchpad track he built in an hour, just so he'd have
something to upload on Sunday. (Lot's of fun, but perhaps deserving of
a 4 for song writing content, and originality).

Thanks for the critcal ears and keystrokes.

Well I suck at doing drum tracks. I know why you added the bongos to add that flava, but the bongos just kinda stuck out making the drum track seem boring. When I do drum tracks, which I just started doing cuz Im a GB newbie, I try to just put some fills in where I would play them. The tune is cool and I totally dig the harp playing, if you keep this just totally bluesy I think it will rock. Maybe you can get some John Bonham loops for drums!!!

For want of nothing &mdash 03/01/05 - 05:48:23 PM
There isn't a lot of structure in this song, but I don't think there needs to be. Its really about the improvisation and interplay between the harp and guitar. Its a jam session captured between two musicians who are both great at their instrument, except that you're both musicians.

I don't know that "shorter" would result in "better." You could always try adding a hook, but the playing is strong enough that you don't need it.

There are some terrific moments of synchronicity between the instruments. Points at which two separate phrases change up to compliment or combine with each other. I think the strength of that interplay is enough without having to add any further dynamics.

Regarding the drums, yeah, a live drummer who brought as much expression to the piece as is evident in the harp and guitar would be killer. Short of that I don't know what you could do with loops to improve it. It isn't as though the percussion is static. There are plenty of fills and punctuations and rythmic changes already. You could always write a custom drum part using midi, but that's a lot of work and I think the drums make an interesting backing as they are if not a stand-out performance.

Waiting for groove #2. I'll be making a blues mix with you and Gudkarma!
