Love Alters Not: Sonnet 116 (Dadai, rschletty, Mr. Ei Oval)

Description
This is a remix done with Logic Express 7. The original is on rschletty's song page.

A MacJams collaboration of Jack Miller (dadai), Richard Schletty (rschletty) and Michael Lavoie (Mr. EI Oval). Jack’s original sketch for this piece is called “Love Alters Not/Demo” – see http://www.macjams.com/song/song_profile.php?lid=3877

Note from Jack Miller: "I was inspired to put Sonnet 116 to music after hearing Richard's ‘Lovestruck Man’. The challenge is to bring the wonderful words of Shakespeare to a modern audience. As I wrote and arranged the music, I knew I wanted Richard to sing it. He brings it to life. Much thanks to him, and to Mike who provides an elegant and much needed acoustic guitar accompaniment."

Note from Richard Schletty: “It has been a pleasure working with two fine musicians without the use of loops or a metronome. This production is almost a virtual live performance because each of us did our own parts straight through from beginning to end (not necessarily in one take, though)."

Lyrics: William Shakespeare (Sonnet 116)
Music/arrangement: Jack Miller
Vocals/arrangement: Richard Schletty
Acoustic guitar: Mike Lavoie
Rhythm guitar/tin flute: Jack Miller

Mixing: Richard Schletty

Lyrics
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

A marked improvement...

in the overall sound production and audio unity. Way to go Richard. Your work with LE7 has increased the listening pleasure of this song.

Thanks,

Jack

A marked improvement...
I'm beginning to understand how easy it is to pile up sound upon sound so
much that things start to get unbearable to listen to, and how some tracks, if
not panned cleanly, will degrade other tracks. LE7 gives one a better chance
of purifying the soundscape, especially where there are 2 or 3 busy guitar
tracks along with 3 to 5 busy vocal tracks. Sorry to say, GB just can't handle
that. No, I am not an Apple LE7 sales agent. I just want to make pleasing
polyphony!

Nice production Schletty!
You managed to keep a very honest quality in the recording, nothing over-equalized or effected. The balance is very nice, especially apparent when the backing vocals appear.

My one suggestion would be to consider the separation created by the nearness of the guitars contrasted to the heavy reverb on the vocals. It works well to create stereo separation, yet creates an unusual virtual space. While the guitars are sitting right next to me the singer sounds fifty feet away. Its not a criticism. I just want to note the impression in case you hadn't intended it.

Nice production Schletty!
Good ear, chikoppi. You're right. The guitars are too separated and have too
much presence while the voice is too ambient. I'll take another pass at it,
keeping in mind what you say about the "virtual soundspace". It ain't
live...and it ain't Memorex...but I'll try to come durn close.
