Fan List
Description:
Since I have been pushing samplers as a way to quickly check out MacJam artists [see Forum Posts], I thought I would lead by example and put one together (like Tiler & Joanna have already done). It was easy to do, took less than a couple of hours. Hopefully you will hear something here you missed when it was posted, and give the complete song a listen. I think most people know me for instrumentals, so I decided to compile samples from vocals that I have posted during the last couple of months. (Listed below) Runs less than 4 minutes.

1. Holy Temple (Rescue Me)
2. Chasing Shadows
3. Keep Looking for Jesus
4. Take My Hand
5. Figure Out Love
6. No End
7. Holy Temple (Part 2)

I like this very original harmony.

Thanks Todd. I really appreciate that coming from you. I have a son your age
(15), and he would rather drink milk (which he hates) than listen to his dad's
music. I am going to check out your Ammo tune. Thanks again.

Nice choice of material, very well combined. Each snippet
flows smoothly into the next.

I'm really caught between a rock and a hard place as far as
voting on these samples is concerned. Samples are a
GREAT idea, but I'm not sure that they should be voted on
in the same way as the individual tunes are. I'll have to
check out your forum now.

Thanks Cameron. I agree that rating samplers is a problem, although after
doing this one, I realize there is a certain technique to it, in the editing, the
flow, etc. But I don't believe scoring is important. Here is my reply (below) to
others
on this
subject from the Forum on 'Samplers':

I agree the 'readers digest' version is not ideal, but I don't think
everyone
has time to go through all the songs they may have missed on a member's
homepage. (I had listened to many of the Tiler's tunes, but when I heard his
sampler, I knew quickly there were other songs I wanted to check out.)

So many songs, so little time.

I think this also helps 'revive' older songs that get buried in the archives. I got
this comment yesterday from Bronco re: Keep Looking for Jesus, a song I
posted two months ago:

Thanks for putting the compilation together which
pointed me to this song. Great little song and the
performance was perfect. If have your permission I might
steal this one for my famous living room performances. I
would of course give you the songwriting credit.

As for the difficulty in rating samplers, I don't think scoring them is
the
point. I just think it is an unobrusive way to get your songs out there one
more time for some feedback...

Hey! &mdash 02/24/05 - 08:47:38 AM
Your voice is so honest, so warm, so friendly yet full of
depth, so professional yet casual. And the musicality you
bring to every track is inspiring. You're such a great
instrumentalist, it is nice to be reminded of the high
standards and heart in your vocal work.

Paul Simon-ized &mdash 02/24/05 - 09:56:37 AM
Your voice, your Ladysmith Black Mambazo-type
harmonies, and your real (although sometimes obtuse)
lyrics are reminiscent of Paul Simon off stage, at the
laundromat perhaps. Wonderful stuff. The joy of life rings
out in your songs.

Tobin, Richard, thank you for those kind words. I have never thought of
my songs as sounding like Paul Simon at the laundromat--until now.
However, I agree that my lyrics can at times be obtuse. Thanks again.

Thanks for joining the fray.

I was the second person that posted to your first song you
have listed on your "Songs" tunes. I
was struck by your meaning of the song when I emailed
you. It had a totally different meaning when I read your
email than what I expected when I heard it originally.

It would be nice especially when you are scoring so well to
put in more description of your songs and music.

Some of the meaning behind why you wrote it. You have
a lot to offer here at MJ. And I think people would really
enjoy the meanings of why you wrote what you did. I just
can't say enough about that.

I know I have to be more aware of putting in descriptions.
But I think this one thing that makes MJ so important.
That people can obtain more understanding about the
music and words as opposed to going into a record store
and can only glean information on a back of CD etc.

Thanks so much for sharing your material!

You are right, BIll. I usually don't offer much in the way of song descriptions.
Here's why: for some reason I find it difficult to talk about the songs I write,
to discuss their 'meaning,' or even what I was thinking when I wrote them. I
guess I am usually more comfortable letting the song speak for itself, or sing
for itself.

However, you are right, some songs can be interpreted in many ways, which
is what happened on "Holy Temple," the song you listened to and emailed me
about.

I think I take a very unusual approach to songwriting. It is very personal and
very much a solo operation. Maybe by coming to this site with songs I will
open up more? Maybe even collaborate with someone, instead of being such
an iconoclast.

Thanks again for listening, and for all your comments, and for your wonderful
music.

Hey Bill, I just looked at the song description I posted with Holy Temple, and
you are right, it is pretty non-descript:

non-garage band, a capella, many voices

Pretty bad. Not to mention redundant. I can do better than that. Thanks for
pointing it out.

these samplers! Again, a great way to show your breadth of work. Thanks for coming up with a unique way of sharing your music. :)

I'm glad you put this together. I admit I'd been too lazy to check out most of your stuff. But now I'm glad I didn't miss this. And I'll be sure to give another listen. You have a unique style that MacJams need. Love the vocal harmonies. Very creative. Excellent writing. Thx. for sharing your tunes.
