Big Car - No Shoes

Description
I uploaded this to my band's MJ page (PBGB) in February because there were a couple of the guys from PBGB playing on it. I'm just moving this new mix here so it's included with the rest of my songs at MJ.

PBGB is a project based in Pambula Beach NSW. There's a core of 4 or 5 players, but we also have a wider "PBGB family" that at last count, was over 15 players. Some of the music we post is just the core, while other posts include players from the wider family. This is an example of the latter. It was kind of like an online collab without being online.

This is a new mix for my third album which will be coming out in a few weeks (hopefully). It features Jem Savage on soprano sax and Fender Rhodes, Peter Reid on drums and Ken Vatcher on percussion. Apart from the vocals, I'm playing bass, guitar and "B3".

Recorded at The Shed and mixed/mastered at Jiguma Studio in Pambula Beach, NSW Australia with help from Ken.

Tobin - I hope the sax volume in this mix is more to your liking.

It's nice to be back at MJ - sorry if I missed your songs - I've been "away".

Lyrics
Big Car – No Shoes
©2012 Neil Porter

Big hat – no cattle
Big sky – but no rain
Nice horse – no saddle
Got a ticket – no plane
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Bad war – losing battle
Big smile – you’re in pain
Big bucks – big hassle
Nice tune – but no fame
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Big car – no shoes
Big car – no shoes

Good minders – bad manners
Fast rail – slow train
Low bar – flame fanners
Big head – no brain
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Big car – no shoes
Big car – no shoes

Great song
Love the lyrics and the wonderful laid back delivery still has quite an edge.

Solid performances from everyone.

Great to hear another incarnation of this fine song, Neil. An uber cool vibe. Great mix. Sounds fantastic. Fine arrangement and musicianship. Especially like the sax. Thanks, Peter.

I think I nailed the mix much better in this version - with much less clash between sax and piano for a start. Jem is indeed a boy wonder on the sax (and almost every other instrument he lays hands on). I'm hoping to get back into the rhythm of MacJams soon.

Big
Quality all round here, Neil. Strong, direct lyrics. Instruments all clear in the mix and each contributes. Insistent vocal (your voice reminds me of someone. I'll remember who at some stage.) I like it a lot!

Karen!
Thanks for the listen and comment. It does feel a little like coming home, but I don't know where I found the time to listen and comment on so many songs before. AG - yes, that was an interesting one. I must play it again.

Cool song - not heard
Hadn't heard the original, so I'm glad you posted this. The lyrics bring a chuckle, and the singing, mix, and solos are spot on.

Thanks for listening Andrew
I so wish we could play this stuff live, but the core group haven't done a gig for almost 2 years now, and I don't think it's likely to happen again anytime soon :(
But, life goes on and I'm starting to get back into writing again after a long lay-off.
Cheers from Oz,

Wow
I`m really impressed, Neil.
Wonderful work, really, really fantastic!
It`s not only the good performance, not only the writing....but the sum of all parts make it a gem, a great composition.
Sound is fantastic, so fresh but not disturbing, so clear but not to "trebly", absolutely marvellous.
Last but not least I want to say that the lyrics are sofa king good, they`re fitting like a glove to your voice, wow!!
Totaler Wahnsinn, Neil!
Danke für ein sensationelles Stück Musik!

Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland

Danke sehr Ingo!

This mix really has solved a few issues I missed first time around. Today I was visiting a friend with a new studio, and tried some amazing UA plugins with my final mix. I can report that the CD version will sound vastly better than this one - hopefully the whole CD will :)
But I digress. Thanks for listening.

Great mix Neil, everything sits well. I like how the sax and keys intertwine, very subtle, very classy. Bass sounds great! Nice lyric and vox!

Very well put together song!

CROSSING THE MERIDIAN

PBGB has, clearly, loosed the shackles of the pedestrian for the Pro Level of Composition and Production Values.

Bravo, Gentlemen!

Hey Coop!
Thanks so much for your comment - we're really trying to lift our game. Although there are challenges at the moment, with changing core personnel, and a lack of a capable core "band" for gigs, we do seem to be able to knock out some good recordings.
If you haven't already had a look, check out Garry Carson Jones' PBGB video at http://thepbgbblog.blogspot.com.au/

Big Car
Hey Neil - great to hear somethng new from you. This has all the elements that make up your style, yet the additional musicianship gives it an enhanced dimension which is very interesting. Love the sax; that turnabout at 3:00 is very cool. Enjoyed - thanks!

hey .Neil good to catch up on a few old favs. Always good to try playing with others and I like the idea of a loose collective that comes together from time to time round a core of players. Much enjoyed. Must call back more often. cheers Mark

Big Car ...
Hah - after Hurricane Sandy tore through New York .. in order to sing this song here .. we'd have to change the lyric to "Big car - no gas" : )

I can see why you are hanging out at the "shed" these days if you are coming up with live collaborations like this. I'm sure the unsteady element of not having a regular core can be unsettling .. yet there obviously is something dynamic going on in the mix of things. You have captured that zest in this production.

That .. and the time-devouring process of trying to get a new album out. It's amazing how many details there are to getting something finished.
