Description
I nearly posted this last year but wasn't happy with the mix so had to wait another year for remembrance Sunday.
I was reading a lot about Word War 1, especially 'Forgotten Voices of the Great War' so that's the starting point.
The first 2 lines are from a popular propaganda song of the times.
The Missus helped with some of the other lines.
This song may be best appreciated with headphones, loud..and at night.
Please hear it all the way through if you can bear it.
Many thanks to Ben Boldt for various drum sounds.

Lyrics
We don’t want to lose you
but we think you ought to go
It’ll all be done by christmas time
in a couple of months or so
and you’ll return a hero
with a medal on your chest
a soldier in a uniform
at Lord Kitchener’s request

Dug out in the trenches
the rain, the ice, the cold
To think I lied to get here
17 years old
The fields are full of dead men
There’s fire in the skies
Missiles flying overhead
I don’t want to die

We didn’t want to lose you
We really couldn’t tell
Those lies that set you marching
Conscripted you to hell
and you returned a hero
with a bullet through your chest
a soldier in a uniform
Lord Kitchener’s bequest

Excellent work
Shades of Pink Floyd.

Great sound Brendan, very effective. Sparse and atmospheric

Loved the lyrics and the way you've got the second voice behind you.

I understand why you want us to listen to the end. I'll say no more.

Brilliant Brendan. A sensitive and powerful treatment of a difficult subject.

Cheers

Dick

floyd
I can see the comparison with floyd.
The octave higher box was a common technique for Gilmour/ Waters.
Funny how they seem to have the copywriter on it :-)
Thanks for dropping in and the listen and glad you liked it
cheers

Agree with the Pink Floyd comparison.
Not that this doesn't have anything original to offer, it does; the tone and anti-war sentiment though, are very familiar. Powerful enough to be painful to listen to, not in a negative way though.

The sparse, evocative arrangement gives the song poignancy and an appropriate sense of gravitas. The change up is powerful. Fine song. Fine post. Regards, Peter.

Certainly has the funereal tone that suits the sentiments being expressed. I like the expanded sounds from 3:17. Well written, played, recorded and mixed. The voices work well. Quality post!

Reminds me of Pink Floyd. Good vocals. Strong images and emotions in the lyrics. I liked the way the arrangement ramped up towards the end.

Great
This is fantastic. The Sound and the melody remembers me to some Pink Floyd stuff. It has some Waits/Cohen influence, too, but in the end it is one of a kind and just fantastic!
Love this really, downloaded and put on my iPod. Wanna hear it, when I walk through the foggy streets in my little village at night...
Thank you very much, this song really touches me.

Greetings from a grey and cold autumn day in Lower Saxony, Germnay,

I
can hear shades of Pink Floyd here too and I love songs with sparse arrangements. You have done a great job here and this is excellent!
Love it when it builds up, some nice guitar tones and great playing.
A powerful song and one of your best Brendan, very much enjoyed.
Thanks.
