Description
To celebrate my 8th year on MacJams, another of my old demos...

This song is an abstract biographical sketch of my life, written in the early afternoon of my existence. Now, in the evening of my life, I find it still mirrors my wonder at this gift that is Life and the capacity we have to dream of all our possibilities.

I winged this without a click track on an old Mason-Hamlin studio upright piano, adding electric guitar and a vocal track. The drums were added after the fact by Bob Baker, a talented hobbyist drummer I met years ago.

It was recorded using SHURE SM-57’s under the piano lid; the vocal was recorded with a SHURE SM-58 microphone all mixed into my old TEAC 3340-S Reel-To-Reel tape recorder.

A Chance To Dream

In the morning of my life, when my locks were curly gold
T’was a time so full of fun, as I grew strong and not just old ---
In the year when I turned 10, well we all thought we were men
So we planned our lives of Adventure, we had such dreams ---

It is now the afternoon, God, it seems to come too soon
Yet I’ve had my share of adventures ---
I have lived and loved and lost and I found that there’s a cost
Yes, a price we all must pay for our wishing
Yet still I dream ---

C’mon and Dream ---------

As I face the end of day, seems there’s so much left to say
And so much to be done, no time to do it ---
I’ve been cursed and I’ve been blessed, I’ve been put right to the test
Still I’m glad for this chance to go through it
For A Chance To Dream ---
For A Chance To Dream ---
For A Chance To Dream ---

C’mon and Dream ---------
You gotta Dream ------

Happy Ann./B-Day, J.A. !
We have distant Kilts in common. LOL Love the optimism in your lyrics. Where is Arthur Dent when you need him?! :~ D

Thank you, Carole. Optimism is good for the soul, so it is part of my diet. The last time I saw Arthur, he was working at a sandwich shop in Erie, Pennsylvania. ;)

A Chance To Dream
Enjoyed the "old style" feel to this, Joe. It has an early 80's Supertramp type of vibe with the expansive vocals and the prominent piano. Good song. Thanks, Peter.

Re: A Chance...
Thank you, Peter. You hit it right on the head... written in late 1979 or early 1980. You're the first to associate a Supertramp vibe to it though... I'll gladly take that. ;)

I used to dream of having
an open reel tape deck.....you know what? I would still love one....anyway I am glad to hear the use of the wah pedal and all the other 70's and (for me) Moody Blues feel to this delightful demo....great stuff.............

Re: I used to dream...
Thanks, Chris. I'm pleased you liked this old demo and thankful for the Moodys comparison... they made some marvelous music.

Funny, when I worked with the reel-to-reel tape machines I always dreamed of not having to deal with cleaning heads, splicing tapes, tape jams and spills, etc.

I did buy a 4-track TEAC on eBay several years ago, so that I could digitize my old demos. That process brought back all those old memories of the bugaboos I had to contend with. ;)

Life
To live, perchance to dream. It feels a little light a golden light of memory has shone on a life story with all its ups and downs and still comes up optimistic and with purpose. The elements of this are all great showing your strong musicianship and wise perspectives, not to mention a feel reminiscent of the 70s. Thoroughly enjoyed it Joe!

Thanks for allowing downloads,
Doug

Big room
It sounds like this is recorded from a big stage or even a stadium. A very good song/composition. I really like the energy from the piano and your singing. Your words "It is now the afternoon, God, it seems to come too soon"... indeed it does. Just when the fun is starting.

Re: Big room...
Thank you for your comments, Thor. This was recorded in an empty, highly-reflective 30' x 20' room that I used as my studio at that time. A bit of reverb helped the sound seem even bigger. And for me, years later, it's now *Early Evening* — but I still manage to have a bit of fun. ;)

Ah, the sound of analog equipment
This song has the spirit of the 1970s, a period I fondly remember. Somehow the light was different, and the sound seemed to be different too. The fact that I was listening to AM radio probably had something to do with the latter.

But the pre-digital recording quality of this song takes me back to when music was more of a complete experience, all the sounds mixed up in a tiny cheap speaker, so that you underwent the _song_ rather than listened to the individual instruments.

Thanks for affording me this experience.

Re: Ah, the sound...
Thanks, Vic. I'm pleased you are one of those who still recognize that the Song... is still the thing. It's a message in a (waveform) bottle, whether in analog or digital form. So many tools have been added, so many additional hues for the artist's palette — and yet the song itself remains the real art. ;)

I like the energy you bring to this song along with production and overall performance. Great job! Some might not like the sound, not produced enough, but I think it brings an immediacy to the effort.

Re: Energy...
Thanks, Tim. These old homemade 4-track demos were really meant to showcase my songwriting skills, so broader production values were not really a consideration. Back in those days, publishers and record companies really didn't care to hear polished productions, rightly believing they had better resources to conduct that end of the business. If I were re-creating this song today, there are a number of elements I would add to the production. ;)

Sounds like it was recorded...
...just yesterday. Such great energy here that just draws the listener in. The song itself is so well-written, chugging through verses with clarity and then opening out into that great refrain (Yet I Still Dream). Great hope in these lyrics that apparently refuses to fade. ... And, by the way, the M-H piano is cool, too. This is really a cool song and I enjoyed listening to it very much.

Re: Sounds like it was recorded...
Oops! Sorry, Paul... I must have been on sabbatical from the internet when you posted your comments. But thank you for the kind words. That vintage Mason-Hamlin actually had a beautiful tone, but I had no idea how to capture it at the time. Micing it under the hood only ensured capturing the notes — not the true, rich sound. ;)

Where was I? Just a bit way too belated. Very festive, nice melody, a real cool progression and you have a fantastic voice. It does sound like a old tape recording, this would be really cool to hear recoded with today's technology. I can tell this is one of those songs that brings you back memories.

Thanks, Barry. Yeah, it was a pretty sweet piano that someone wanted to get rid of and I was lucky enough to get it — a turn of the century Mason-Hamlin studio upright. With a little love on replacing some parts and getting it tuned it had a sweet sound. ;)
