The Asteroid [Doom2012]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Somewhere those watching the skies unexpectedly find a new massive object heading our way. Repeated observations show it is moving fast, is about the size of Texas, and is likely to hit the earth with catastrophic results within a week. It is Dec 16, 2012.

Some believe it. Some don't. Many make plans to move to higher ground or somewhere else on earth where they think they will be safe. Rumours abound. There is the best and worst brought out in humanity, both compassion and opportunism, care and chaos. On the 21st the global mayhem resolves into an eerie silence as people across the globe wait for the end. Will the retargeted nukes work?

This piece is orchestral in a modern 20th century style and doesn't follow too many rules apart from the rhythm. I cut it down from the originally captured performance as it seemed too intense an experience. As it is, it seems much longer (to me) than the 2:22 it actually is.

As always I welcome constructive criticism, bouquets and brickbats.

Dedicated to Alimar, one of my earliest orchestral influences here at MJ.

Cheers,
Doug

This is brilliant! As fine an orchestral piece as I've heard at this site. Intense and interesting! So realistic sounding. I could see their bows moving!

Bows
I was at the symphony the other night and so the visual of bows going up and down is pretty fresh in my mind. This piece would probably have all kinds of visual mayhem were it really performed live!

Thanks Andy for your highly supportive comments. I'm touched.

Hyper Dramatic
Well, that was what I was going for, without getting too 'epic movie trailer'-like which we've all heard enough times that it's hard to take a new twist on the subject.

Film at eleven - any takers on the visual arts side of things....?

I appreciate the comments Bill. Take care,
Doug

Cue the Armageddon team walking in slo-mo
Thanks for the very kind words VIc. I was actually surprised and happy with how this one went, mainly because not a lot of thought went into it actually. This was hammered out on my portable mini keyboard where the main thing I was going for was tonality of the string instruments and strong rhythm in the low drums. I guess it was more like a percussive performance than anything else. I then went back and reinforced certain lines with doubling in higher strings, brass, and added some brass accents here and there and higher percussion - anvils, xylophone etc. So the going back to augment required thought but it was after the magic of the first tracks that were laid down without really thinking about what I was doing.

Pretty cool how creativity works (and you should know!!!!)

Peace,
Doug

It's an asteroid, by Jove!
You sure know how to compliment Michael. If you were reeling then good, since I was going for that level of intense over-stimulation (and hence why it was so short).

You can review my work any time sir. It's most gratifying to hear from you and thanks for making the time to drop a note and share your thought.

Exciting piece of drama, Really drives along. I like the percussion work. Doug. I'm faving it, and I'm even leaving my icon intact. I recommend the book Lucifer's Hammer by Niven and Pournelle, if you want to read about how this will actually go down. The best and the worst --- no doubt about that. An appropriate dedication and a cool picture. I see a face in it --- over on the middle right --- and it looks like it means business. Thanks for the DL. An excellent addition to the doomfest.

Percussion
Ha ha, I knew you'd have an ear for what was going on in the percussion department being a long white haired (and long white moustachioed) cross-legged sitting master in that field. I don't consider that this has the depth of what you normally bring forth drum-wise, but then I am just a Padawan for rhythm.

Thanks for the encouraging remarks Mr. Kloo and for your post in this same doomfest.

Doug

I have heard of Lucifer's Hammer but have not read it.

Wow!
As good as I've heard in a symphony hall. It does sound like it is longer, because it really focuses your attention on each moment. If it isn't all over there could be a suite following on this, that is, if we're still around. Enjoyed. Many thanks.

Doug Somers said 1617 days ago (December 17th, 2012)
Would you like a suite with that?
I could have developed this more but the whole subject was just too much for me. I'd rather write about sunnier outcomes, or at least themes with a balance of dark and light that come out neutral.

The EWQL samples are all recorded in a large hall so the release trails have that quality built right in. That makes for much easier mixing for lazy people like me and I can still get the 'you are there' feeling for less effort.

Glad you liked it Charlene, and thanks for your support!!

Stunning!
A piledriver of a post. The energy is enormous and the anticipation is palpable. Really, really well done, but much too short.

I know, I know: you don't want to cause any anxiety attacks from extended intensity. Maybe a middle section where you could have slow, syrupy strings signifying the heart-breaking stories of young people who won't get a chance to fulfill their ambitions, or parents who won't get to see their children grow up. Then you could finish with a final movement where you return to the spirited and fiery drama.

Or not ;-) This sounds great as is.

Piledriver
Funny you mention the mid-section break since I had thought of that too, and when my son heard it he also thought that after a period of silence it could start up again with the frantic activity. I think I will have to leave that section to another composer for now though since I feel a bit drained from this as it is, even though your artistic rationale is spot on and could make this into a longer and more varied and interesting piece. Wanna have a go?

Thanks Richard - your comments and careful listening mean a lot.

Ominous
It's interesting that not long after I was starting to work on the initially captured tracks I hammered into the sequencer, I started to realise that there is a Bowman-like quality to the syncopated rhythm of the strings in this piece and so for that unintended yet most valuable influence I thank you! Maybe this piece is really an hommage to your works.

I will keep in mind returning to this some day but for now I am not sure I could face easily the prospect of musically describing all that an asteroid strike, and the foreknowledge of its coming, would entail at a human level.

I also have 2 other pieces I'm working on and so I'd better get on with them since I have put them aside to participate both in the Hallowe'en challenge and now this one. Must ... stay ... focussed.... :)

Charlie, your support and friendship have always mattered a lot to me and I appreciate your continued encouragement and the careful listen you've given this latest work.

Be well sir,
Doug

Impact!
Intense and dramatic - just as an asteroid impact song ought be!

And it seems to get better with every addition listen. That is, the ear decodes more detail in the chaos. You have really packed in a lot of music into two minutes and twenty-two seconds of space.

The only issue I have is I simply expected a bigger boom at the end : )
Check out my latest song called Brand New Day
Doug Somers said 1615 days ago (December 19th, 2012)
Bigger boom
I thought about that too. Just use drums, or use a rump from a synth sample, but I went totally old school. It sounds like you've given this a couple of listens which is touching that you've been moved to have a second go.

I agree that there is a lot to decode and it has the effect I think of perceptually extending the piece.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts Warren. All the best,
Doug

Not that I believe this week we will get smacked, but with the articles about near misses (and another asteroid is supposed to be passing inside the orbit of the moon next year) it does seem possible some day. It is pretty sobering thought about what that would mean for those waiting for the end.

Thanks so much for your effusive comments. It's nice to know that the music is having an .... impact ... :)

DOOM
A magnificent orchestration. A brilliant way to end. I guess you could create an entire Doom Suite with this as the first movement. And then depart into something dramatically still, monochromatic, and vertical in contrast. Also a graatt piece to attempt to pace a quarter mile too -- btw at 2:22 that wood be leisurely yet if I fight the tempo I may just set the foundation for a 6:40 mile !!! I am not ready to die just yet!!!

djdrshaman said 1617 days ago (December 18th, 2012)
Odd
Ly enough it seems much longer than 2:22. The incessant rhythm almost warps one's sense of time. There is urgency which leaves me wanting more.
Check out my latest song called The Stoning
Doug Somers said 1615 days ago (December 19th, 2012)
Doom Suite
Could work on it maybe someday. There is certainly a lot of room for development along this theme, although perhaps not the happiest one. As to running to music like this, if it were in my earbuds I'd probably be running in random directions, changing with each new crash.

It is weird that the feel is longer than 2:22. It may be that the amount of detail where the patterns have some but not much predictability makes for an assault on the senses and the interpretation in the mind is 'this much stuff normally happens over a long period of time'. It would be an interesting query for a psychologist.

Thanks for the very kind words and humorous slant on things.

Be well,
Doug

This was really tempting to do electronically but then I learned way more doing it with an orchestra. I don't know about the life review thing but if the amount of details you had to review contained every event in your life, wouldn't it seem like a lifetime to review it, where it would then end with another review that had your life plus the review, and so on ... :)

RIch tone
Interesting you comment on the tone Philip, which is something that I did think about in the creative process. I wanted to get some variety in types of sound and have some accents here and there. For example I recalled a piece by Alimar where he used a xylophone for a melodic accent and so I did the same - a first for me.

Nice of you to take the time for a listen Philip and to share your thoughts.

Wonderful brass hits
This is loaded with drama and wonderfully orchestrated cinema effects. Not only do you capture the drama of your narrative; you also write with a sense of purpose and an exquisite grasp of the instruments you are using. The rhythm certainly drives the whole number, but your use of brass (especially) and those string jabs is really remarkable. Very pleasant to hear such "controlled energy" that is sustained for the duration of the piece. Bravo!

Controlled energy
I don't know quite what to say in response Paul other than thank you for having a listen and being so very complimentary about your impressions. I am trying to listen more carefully to what other composers do to achieve certain sounds, effects and moods, and to use the parts of what I can understand and remember in new work to try it out. That being said, there is something magical about improvisation that is seems to be sourced outside of my planned conscious intent, and it is most often from bashing things around then polishing up the dents later in editing that interesting things arise.

Thanks again for being such an enthusiastic supporter Paul. It really helps to keep me moving forward, learning more, and venturing into the 'previously unknown' musically.

Peace,
Doug

Thanks for your kind words sir!

Ominous
I thought I wouldn't go for the typical build of tension but rather just dive into panic and general running about arms flailing. Stravinsky - yes, I get that now but didn't think of it before. Maybe my fingers were channeling him :)

thanks for the kind comments,
Doug

Just heard this
A really riveting composition. Great use of the tools at hand, outstanding orchestration and percussion writing. Great job!

Timely.
Though this is posted it a while back I just turned on the tube to see some large rock just shook up Russia. What a perfect soundtrack.
Very exciting - really thrilling work.

Kind of a one two three punch
When I wrote this it was about the near miss asteroid in Dec 2012 and the there was another one in Feb 2013 and of course the meteor you mention as well. Let's hope that's the end of the space junk for a while! Glad you enjoyed the piece and thanks for the comments!
