Lyrics
Runnin Out of Road
Words & music by John Whitehead, C. 2010

I’ve been driving all night, now I see the pale light
Sun will soon be rising up above on the road ahead
I’ve been making good time, windows down, the tires whine
Spinning out memories that roll like the highway signs

Time to stop this runnin’round, I’m looking for some higher ground
This road will take you two ways, I’ve been driving three days
Now I’m seeing your face in every route I trace
And the sound of your name rings like home
I still have miles to go but I’m runnin’ out of road

I’ve been roamin’ since the age four, when mama slammed the screen door
I was raised like a weed as she chased her dreams around
I learned how to break trail, cover tracks and turn tail
Got a drawer full of maps and every page is frayed and torn

Time to stop this runnin’round, I’m looking for some higher ground
This road will take you two ways, I’ve been driving three days
Now I’m seeing your face in every route I trace
And the sound of your name rings like home
I still have miles to go but I’m runinn’ out of road

Fourteen hours in the driving rain
Restless legs and caffeine brain
Another lonely town slips by
Underneath that mercury vapor sky

I come rollin’ in at midnight but I don’t see a porch light
The house is quiet, and I wonder is there anyone home?
Then a light get switched on, feet flyin’ at a dead run
And the turning of the lock and my heart are the only sounds

Time to stop this runnin’ round, think I’ve found my higher ground
This road will take you two ways, I’ve been driving three days
Now I’m seeing your face here and now at your place
And the sound of my name tells me I’ve come home
Still have miles to go but I’m runinn’ out of road

Good to hear a new song from you, John. Nice flowing melody and your light, warm, slightly smoky vocal is just right for the lyrics. Easy, tuneful guitar tone. Lilting melody. Beautiful images in the song, and the narrative is very engaging. Excellent!

See...
This is exactly what I love in songwriting.

Reminds me a bit of John Gorka mixed with Pat Alger. And as with those guys, I would buy the 'original' by the author (you), AND I'd love to hear a few versions by other people, just because a song this solid could go so many directions...

Nice playing and nice singing...

Great to hear a fine voice accompanied by some sympathetic acoustic guitar singing a quality song just as nature intended. One take? A balm for the ears. Thanks, John. Regards, Peter.

Splendid little ballad.
I can tell something's special when it's in a genre that I generally dislike but I like it anyway. This is one such, beautifully simple in the ingredients but full of emotion and leaves me in a good mood for work.

Quality work John
I can hear a pedal steel in there. Doesn't need much else.

A perfectly formed piece of songwriting.

Cheers

Excellent tune John ... I always prefer a simple guitar and vocal approach and this is a well written song ... words and performance ... I'm in the room listening to you live.
Cheers

Melody resolves nicely over a good hook which the lyric develops well. Cool images, I especially like "raised like a weed". I like the way the story resolves over the last verse.

That's it
When I first started using GB and recording some of my old songs, my idea was to do exactly this. Pure acoustic with guitar and voice, almost like a live club recording. You inspired me to go back to that project. Great song, and of course your voice has what it takes to go it all the way alone.

A little late
I'm a little late to the show that is you but all I can say is they were all right. Great song, well played and sung. One man and a guitar is where my heart lies and you do it with grace and style.

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
