Description
An old man walks through the town on his way to a cafe that he always goes to on a Sunday.
He looks at the buildings and remembers how they used to be.
He thinks of his comrades who fought alongside him in the war
Stopping to look in the window of a Salvation Army charity shop he sees things that used to belong to friends who have now passed away.
He goes to the cafe and has his usual Sunday meal.
He doesn't usually get to talk to many people and tries to strike up a conversation with the bored waitress.
Leaving the cafe he walks back through the town.
He feels his heart give up on him and goes to join the people who have gone.

The Missus wrote the words and I did the music.
Hope you like it.
Many thanks to Ben Boldt for additional instruments

Lyrics
On the way back to the café
The lonely last survivor smiles
Memories rebuilding landmarks
Shades of comrades by his side

Their beloved souvenirs
Dusty china Shepherdess
Fauna stuck in plastic prisons
Fade in Sally’s window now

All that’s left are words he gathered
Precious memories, almost gone
He’s the last one left to hold them
No one’s left to pass them on

Now the place is full of strangers
No familiar faces here
Sunday’s child is feigning interest
Paid to listen, not to care

On the way home from the café
The lonely last survivor stops
Finally lets go of the memories
Joins the others in the past

Love that gentle backing - it's atmospheric, which suits the powerful lyrics. Emotive vocal. I like the double guitar solo in the middle. Much enjoyed!

This is a nice collaboration between you and the missus. I enjoyed it very much. This song had a strong "Al Stewart" vibe to it.

Well written song. Interesting imagery. The arrangement is tight and has an appealing groove. The bass works very well. Quality post, thanks. Regards, Peter.

I like the mood
What a sad story, the acoustic bed sounds nice with the beat and the vocals fit well. An enjoyable listen and kudos to all involved.

Great song, so catchy and instant. Love it's pushy and solid pace. The vocals sit comfortably in the mix and the instrumentation is perfect.

Don't know
how I missed this (must have been during that period of no notifications).

I thought I got downbeat sometimes!

Excellent lyrics and very well framed.

Great work Brendan!

Song starts out with a cool, albeit melancholy chord progression with just enough dissonance to keep it interesting - nice understated rhythm and beat. Such a sad song - no one really wants to be the last one like that. Enjoyed your tune - thanks for sharing!

I 'm quite late on this one ... I need to pay closer attention to my surroundings. This is a well put together tune. First I want to compliment you on the bass in your mix ... I'm always struggling with it ... it sit well in the mix yet doesn't get buried. The music is dreamy and well produced. Good lyrics and a good song. I'm glad I dropped by.

very haunting
Age is adding a bit of gravitas to your stuff. Unlike myself - I'm still 15!! Very nice song and great lyrics too. I like the touch of reverb and delay on the solo, gives it a reflective feel. Coolio.
