Description:
A collaboration with the excellent kcsaito, who supplied the piano part. Please check out his wonderful piano contributions at:

The pure pleasure of playing with great musicians half a world away is hard to beat.

Another sad-but-jaunty song.

Lyrics:
She wakes in the morning at seven oh three
Mixes her slimfast and gulps down her tea
A man on the news is saying that things
are not what they once used to be

She hears the post as it comes through the door
Picks up the letters that lie on the floor
The bank that likes to say yes just said no
There's a card from her ex-husband Joe

happy birthday
you're a beautiful girl
happy birthday
everything's going to be OK

Her colleagues from pensions and personel
Buy her a card and some nice shower gel
She catches the underground train back to hell
And places the card on the shelf

Chorus

She sits in a winebar and driniks Chardonnay
A man sits beside her says how's your day?
She looks at him and says she's not too sure yet
He offers a cigarette

He says she is beautiful he looks in her eyes
And tells her she looks half as young as she is
She looks at his finger and sees there's no ring
He buys her a Singapore Sling

Chorus

She wakes in the morning at seven o three
Things are still not what they once used to be
He's gone with her handbag and her jewellry
And all that he left was a note

It said

Chorus

fantastic lyrics &mdash 02/28/05 - 11:39:53 PM
You write such great story songs. Funny, dark, and witty. The music itself is also very enjoyable and goes well with the lyrics. Great arrangement. You have a very soft way of singing that maybe would come through better with less reverb; bring it forward and more intimate. The backing "bom bom bom" and falsetto vocals are great, too. I love that.

I have vocal cowardice; hiding behind reverb. I'll try a version without it.
Thanks for the advice.

that's brilliant . . .
fantastic collaboration . . . the music is first class,
. . . and the lyrics are as sharp as ever !
your words set the scene so well, and always catch the
listener off guard with a bitter sweet smile at the end of
your verses . . . very good indeed.
also billy, your singing is getting better with each post !
keep 'em coming . . .

"also billy, your singing is getting better with each post !"

Well that's all your and Rebsie's fault for encouraging me. I hadn't intended
singing on any songs when I first started doing this.

Revolucion

I'll second that &mdash 03/01/05 - 09:12:09 AM
I'm really glad you're persevering with the singing. It
does get better every time and I'm sure it will
continue to do so. This is a great song anyway ...
smart lyrics, nice structure, great mandolin and piano
work. I really like the way you've layered some of the
vocals too. Good stuff!

Well. I still wish I had a voice like yours. Only a little lower, possibly.

Tones of that mandolin are fantastic. Yes keep singing, it
will only get better the more you do it.

Super Song &mdash 03/01/05 - 12:45:16 PM
Mando,

You've done it again. This song creates a beautiful
framework for some very serious words. We can mellow
out on the sweet sounds and then work our brains on the
lyrics. The way you string us along until the last verse is
brilliant. Laughter in the face of tragedy.

Alright! &mdash 03/02/05 - 12:28:10 AM
A fresh sound! I like it. Almost a Simon and Garfunkel
quality. Jaunty and sad...you said it well. Man, I like that
mandolin. Good choices and judicious insertions of bass
and drums.

GREAT storytelling. &mdash 03/03/05 - 11:57:50 AM
GREAT storytelling. Fantastic lyrics, with wonderful
interweaving harmonies and parts, like acappella groups
from the 60s. Tha dancy 6/8 feel makes the whole world
carefree and light. Your pub-ready voice is just right,
even tho at times you sound so sweet I forget to listen to
your meanings. I'm glad you posted the lyrics. A great
track. In my speakers, tho, your falsetto harmonies were
a tad too loud. But that mandolin is perfect. Perfect.

Thanks so much TM. The vocals really do need remixiing; you're right.

This is so low key and so rocking at the same time.
Fantastic!

...as one who encourages you to keep singing!

Loved this song. Great lyrics, great delivery of the lyrics.
Your voice is perfect for the style of the song.
And of course, the mandolin is wonderful to hear, too.

Thanks for posting this. Looking forward to more songs!

Nice slice of 'life...hold the happiness. &mdash 03/07/05 - 03:43:47 PM
Great narrative...you really did a bang up job on the
lyrics. It could easily adapt to a short film..or a play.

The mando is a great medium for telling a tale such
as this. It lends itself well to the vocal. Your playing
was pretty straight ahead, without any razzle dazzle.
The piano was really low in the mix, but still
provided a sense of tension with the low notes that
made it to my ears.

Great theme developed with this...shows strong
writing skills.

Beautiful Imagery &mdash 04/12/05 - 08:29:52 AM
Beautiful Imagery that I can taste. I love the use of so
many flavors in you lyrics.

I like the simplicity in the melodic and harmonic aspects
of this one, but I think that there could stand to be a
contrast in the chorus perhaps. The song grabs my
attention in the beginning, but it just doesn't hold me the
whole way through, and I am not sure why. Lyrically don't
change a thing, because this is exceptionally crafted
writing. But musically I feel like it needs a boost of some
sort. Perhaps an instrumental solo would do the trick.

I am not suggesting any major overhaul, just a little
frosting around the edges to more effectively sweeten
your oh so sweet words.

I loved the chord on the lines "everything is going to be
ok". Great!!!!!

Overall, nice work.

I think that this is the first song I've actually heard on MJ
that tells a story...its a really rare thing these days! The
vocals and mandolin are really nice.. I like it!

Thanks stevel. So I checked out your website and found among the good
tunes that - surprisingly - you're a Dylan fan. My love of narrative songs goes
back to Rosemary, Lily and the Jack of Hearts, possibly the weirdest narrative
song of all time.

Oh yeah - I am a big Dylan fan alright! I love that song too...I have a cool
acoustic unreleased version of it somewhere. Wish he'd hurry up and get his
new album out.

Now I want to learn the mandolin. &mdash 04/22/05 - 08:05:57 PM
I love baki's comment -- totally true! I like the reverb very much, doesn't sound at all as though you're "hiding" behind it.

your performance as well. Great job, both of you! Love it!

Stunning improvement &mdash 04/25/05 - 01:18:14 PM
Your stuff started off interesting and is getting a bit too
close to genius for comfort. No one seems to writing
about the humdrum world the average Joe Blogs inhabits
just now.
This stuff should be in more people's ears.

Solid songwriting &mdash 11/02/05 - 12:42:55 PM
Another very good song. Really enjoyable production ideas that suffer
somewhat in execution. I agree with pgreenstone on too much reverb.
Your voice is perfect for these songs. I am looking forward to your future
posts.
