Description:
A slinky little jazz song with vocals, finger snaps and trumpetting by me. Okay, it's fake trumpetting (just me imitating a trumpet) but I couldn't find a good muted trumpet sound, so I had to improvise.

Lyrics:
When He Met She

From modern man
Back to Neanderthal
One thing's for sure
Woman's gonna keep that man in her thrall.

He thought he had it all
Captain of industry
His hubris made him fall
When he met she.
When he met she

He thought he was immune
He thought he was the boss
But when she sang her siren tune
His heart was a total loss

She was tall and lean
A supermodel beauty
Her withered heart was unseen
When he met she
When he met she

He thought he was immune
He thought he was the boss
But when she sang her siren tune
His willpower was a total loss

She had total control
He'd jump when she'd call it
She had one goal
To empty his wallet
When he met she
When he met she

He thought he was immune
He thought he was the boss
But when she sang her siren tune
His fortune was a total loss

When he met she
Life would never be the same
When he met she
He met she and that was the end of he.

That Trumpet! &mdash 03/01/05 - 12:14:03 AM
Can I get your trumpet as a SoundFont? This, as usual, is
GREAT from you. It puts me back in the days of Gumshoes
and Dames. Cool, (wo)man, COOL!

Allimar -- what a perfect description "gumshoes and dames". It's Music Noir!
And naturally, I'll be hiring myself out as a trumpet player any day now. Count
your blessings it's not a soundfont -- too unpredictable! Thank you so much,
Allimar!

trumpets are incredible!! (you shouldn't have told us!
heheh) i really enjoy your jazzy tunes, i like how this one
is so clean & straightforward

Oh, _nder, if I hadn't told I'd've been getting all kinds of notes saying, "what's
wrong with that trumpet player? Sounds a little... I dunno... not quite right." I
tried every software trumpet and sax I had, but nothing sounded right. The
horns weren't brassy enough, and there was no muted trumpet at all (and I so
wanted a muted trumpet). Sometimes a woman's gotta do what a woman's
gotta do, so I blew my own horn, so to speak. (good thing no one was
watching me record). Thank you for the great comment, _nder!

Wow... &mdash 03/01/05 - 12:59:14 AM
If i was more educated in music i'd try to explain but
unfortunaly its just a hobby, but liked it very very much,
very powerful voice and a very nice jazz/blues or whatever
genre it might be, it was a nice journey... Loved it....

enjoyed it!

... isn't she? Great song. Oozes music. To be sung in a red
sequinned dress, obviously.

Thank you, Mando, and you're right -- she's not a nice woman at all. Love the
"oozes music" line!

Jazz Queen &mdash 03/01/05 - 08:54:59 AM
This is excellent in many ways. The mix is really
great...has depth, flavor, just the right timbre. The piano
is right on and the sting bass.....oh yea....swaggin. The
trumpet just rocks my world...in fact...is that a trombone I
hear? Quite talented instumentalists! Great song as
always Jo.....I'd not put horns in unless you were to
perform live...this is very special as it is. Fun and
character filled track! Always want more.

Thank you, Synco! My faux brass instruments tend to blend together, but I
like your way better -- there are simply more musicians! I'm so happy you
enjoyed the song.

Another cool joint from a jazzy dame! &mdash 03/01/05 - 11:24:48 AM
"...Man in her thrall." Wow! You got way down in the basement on that note!

Great construction and sultry feel. Excellent vocal performance that incorporates some entertaining character acting as well. The instrumental composition (virtual horn included) is tasty and I think this would really scream if there were experienced jazz musicians who were actually improvising behind the vocals (collaboration alert!). I'd sort of like to hear the instruments riff a bit under the verse beginning "She had total control." I can't tell you why, because its an intuitive reaction.

Thank you, Chi! I think we now know how low I can go (that basement was a
tad shaky). Real musicians would, of course, really jazz it up. I'm grateful
loops exist or I couldn't do anything!

That "trumpet" is something else...it has real
personality... great creative improvisation! You seem
to have a lot of tricks up your sleeves... you never
cease to surprise and delight. Great lyrics as well, by
the way. I like the sassy delivery!

Cool Jazz, cool lyrics, cold heart. . . I've got to go put my
coat on. I think I know the woman you sing about.
Great performance - you've got the lounge thing down
perfectly.

...you show how much FUN making music can be. LOVE
the faux trumpet. How cool is that?

You have a gift in your wonderful voice, witty and wily
lyrics and your ability to enjoy yourself in the process.
You're fab :)

Once again... &mdash 03/02/05 - 10:33:27 PM
Thank you, Mystie! I do have a ton of fun singing, and think it's wonderful
that you're able to hear that. To me, every song is a play and the singer is the
actor. The actress in me just loves playing the role.

Excellent Mood &mdash 03/05/05 - 07:51:03 AM
I picture my dad in a NYC bar/club after getting home
from WWII and listening to this.

Excellent song, performnace and production. I still wish
that were a real trumpet though - but wonderful vocal
gymnastics doing the trumpet sound yourself!

Thank you, Mungo! My dad was WWII, as well (or as he called it, "The Big
One"). And believe me, I wish it were a real trumpet, too! But in lieu of that, at
least I had me some fun.

Wonderful slinky, sassy song, warmly delivered. You
always come up with great ideas. Definitely the most
innovative trumpeting I've heard! Hehe ... nah, you
don't need a real one. The one you've got is brilliant.

Thank you, Magritte! I couldn't help it -- the song needed that muted
trumpet sound, and I couldn't find anything else that would work. When
everything else fails, improvise!

Something to put on... &mdash 01/05/06 - 06:13:16 AM
...while reading Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler... Maybe "The
Long Goodbye"...

The trumpet reminds me that, supposedly, jazz trumpeters used the
mute to get a "voice-like" sound from their instrument...here you are,
returning the favor... Imitating the trumpet that's imitating a voice...

I really like the (GarageBand? really?) upright bass sound...holds the
piece together nicely...

To my ears, it's a genuinely professional, marketable, performable jazz
standard-in-the-making...

Thank you, Mike, for giving my music a shot even though I'm an admitted
looper -- that took a lot of class and an open mind. I'm sincerely grateful for
your comment.
