Description
this is the first time that i have used my 12 string guitar on a recording. it is pretty tough to mike a 12 string.

for the lyrics... i had none. i ad libbed a few times on the first chorus and came up with a line for the song (i do that from time to time). i hit record to do the vocal and a first for me... i ad-libbed the vocal/lyrics in one take. i doubt if i could ever do that again. took a few times to get the backing vocals. i had to learn what i had done. somehow i actually remembered the repeat for the third chorus same as the second. after i transcribed what i sang. i re-recorded the main vocal, to see if i could get it a bit better. it actually came out the same with the exception of a few words being clearer.

the solo is 3 electrics playing in 1,3,5 harmony

Lyrics
chains of change

here you're standing center stage
and you want all the people to play in your game
twist and turn and what is fate
but you know no one wants to play

you want to change the day, the week, the month, the year at play
and you don't want anything to change your ways

i heard you turn and twist the words around
just so you hear how they sound
what was said and what is heard
sometimes it's a two way street that never meets

you want to change the day, the week, the month, the year at play
but you know that nothing stays the same
you want to change the minds
of those who cannot fall in line
but you know that some things never really change

the world is comfortable
when you look from inside out no one complains
bright lights they fall in shadows
that you thought that never could exist

you want to change the day, the week, the month, the year at play
but you know that nothing stays the same
you want to change the minds
of those who cannot fall in line
but you know that some things never really change

You should use that 12 string more often. Great sound coupled with that jangling electric rhythm guitar. Top-notch (as always)!

Fine effort with the ad-libbing, Vic. Glad you pulled the 12-string out, too. It recorded pretty well, I reckon. Interesting effect on the solo as well. You pulled it all together in your usual fine style. Thanks, Peter.

Very nice job Vic. Mix is perfect. The 12 string gtr sound is awesome. Dual lead is as well. Vocal delivery is spot on. DR is perfect as well.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,

Vic
how do you do it, I mean the description explains it but you make it seem so easy, I like when you let it flow the singing is real natural and at ease
btw I always love the sound of the 12 string I had 2 12 string guitars in my life they aare gone now but it great to hear it in a Vic song! :)

actually i don't know how i did it. i don't think i could pull it off again since it seemed like a unconscience thing. this 12 string is a good 35 years old and is so easy to play

Vic, 12-string
Man, what a beautiful sound. Sounds like you mic'd it pretty darn good. And that 3-paert solo... Nice! I agree with Andrew, more 12-string, sir.
Vic Holman said 1696 days ago (March 31st, 2013)

The 12 really gives this that vintage Byrds sound, sounds like it could've been written in the late 60's...and I mean that in a good way. Guitar is always outstanding on your tracks...really fine work Vic.

Love it, Vic!
The 12 sounds great. I'd like mine to record this clear and crisp, but I'm still tinkering with it. Jack's right about the Kinkish flavor. This style seems natural to you. A great sound! Peace.

i've tried a soundhole pickup and miking it before, it's a tough instrument to nail for the full flavor, maybe 2 mics might work even better. ill have to see how that might work

ad-lib?
I've always liked that 'some things will never change' theme, and this one is no exception. Really an amazing job to ad-lib the vocal/lyrics here. Keep them coming, Vic.

12 string
beautiful 12 string sound. Neat how the arrangement builds and gets really huge towards the end & then back to basics for the end. Nice singing too. Kind of sounded like dire straits meets pink floyd in spots, but of course it's your own Vic Holman thing happening... Enjoyed much!

the build
thanks for catching that. i was going to add even more tracks on the last chorus, however it was getting pretty full and would of been a chore to mix at that point

The 12 string
Fits well to your style. I really like the lyrics, how they change with the music and flow well with the melody. The break into the solo sounds fantastic. Thanks for further reaching into your realm, experimenting and sharing it with us.

Lovely clear mix and effective arrangement.
