Description
Short version: I was ripped off a while ago and had to work insane hours for a while to get my finances back on track; so for weeks and weeks (actually MONTHS) I've not had time to keep up my music study, or write any music at all. Indeed I've hardly been to MacJams even to listen. Now the finances are sorted and my hours are more sane, I'm back!

OK, away from my old problems and to the music.

This is my first attempt at a composition using a pentatonic scale, and I have to say it was easier than I expected. There were two objectives; write something in a pentatonic scale (duh) and write something that starts simple and slow and gets a bit more complicated and busy as it goes on. Kind of like starting a walk in a quiet residential part of the city and walking to somewhere very busy, but busy in a good way not just overcrowded and noisy. So that gave me the title.

I chose the F# pentatonic scale as a gimmick really, keyboard players will be amused; this scale uses black keys only and potentially uses all of those within each octave. I did still try to make this worthwhile as a tune. I think maybe it shows a little that I'm rusty, but expect better things as time goes on. And what a relief to have some time for music again!

Thank you! First up!
Maybe the energy is my own delight at finally having some time for music again. I had fun tinkling away on my keyboard composing this and I'm glad that comes across, so thanks for letting me know.

If this is rusty I don't know what great music will come out when you're back in form. An excellent piece of piano music. Thanks and cheers.

Thanks, it's great to be writing music again.
Months with the Midi keyboard sitting idle is too long, so the pent-up energy was there for something a bit lively. I'm glad people are enjoying it.

good to have you back
This is quite wonderful piano playing. Some very sonorous harmonies. I like the deep left hand chords.

I wanted some bass punch.
but the first version showed the perils of writing using Midi, I actually had notes in it that were too low for a real piano, so I tweaked it to keep it all within the proper range. Still it goes pretty close to the left hand end of the piano keyboard, someone might need long arms to play both parts at once :) Thanks for the comment, it's nice that people here notice the details like those chords.

You know I can't play a note,. don't you?
All midi piano-roll editing after keying in a few fragments using a Korg MicroKey 37, a 3-octave USB midi device. It's then tweaked to give every single note it's own velocity and alter the timing by a few milliseconds to emphasise notes the way a pianist does. If it sounds like playing to someone with your level of experience then I must be doing it well. Thanks for the comment though, it's great to be back!

The build-up was important to me.
I wanted a piece that started simple and worked gradually into the more complicated parts, maybe with some surprises. Thanks for letting me know it worked for you.

Welcome back. It is great to hear your composition and midi skills develop so well. You definitely achieved your aim. Most worthwhile listen. Some oriental influences? Or does the key just lend itself to that? Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

Oriental music is all built on pentatonic scales...
...so if you use a pentatonic scale it's sometimes hard to avoid references to the way that eastern music works. I think it's the ascending intervals I used that give that eastern flavour, I'll spend some time studying that to see what else emerges. Glad you enjoyed this and thanks for the comment, it set me off thinking and studying something new.

Amazing!
You fooled me! I thought you were playing this with hands on the 78s, until I read some of your responses to comments. Your effort is very successful! I tried to do a tune using only the black keys once, it wasn't easy! Congratulations.

Fun to write, maybe not so fun to try and play
Yeah the little bits I played using my midi keyboard were mostly done at quarter speed, surprisingly some of the faster bits I could play at the proper speed but not with the proper timing or emphasis, so the piano-roll editor is my friend. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the tune!

Nice piece. Nice tone on the piano too. I am surprised to learn your technique in creating this as it sounds fairly natural to my ears. I would never guess you are scripting it the way you do. Nice to have you back around, and incidentally thanks for your support on my music as well!

It's a Steinway sample set.
The piano is the one that came with the Jam Pack Symphony Orchestra; it's a sampled Steinway Model D, the piano that graces more than 90% of professional concert halls worldwide. It's a fantastic piano sound, Steinway didn't get that massive market share for no reason. I have customised the instrument by switching off the reverb and I add reverb to the master track in GarageBand using a plug-in instead. Much better results.

As for making it sound natural, every single note gets tweaked for timing and velocity. It takes well over an hour for a track like this, actually longer than it takes to write it and get it into GarageBand. I had some tips from a pianist on how pianists emphasise notes and how things need to be timed; it seems to have been sound advice.

Thanks for being here too. It's great to be back.

It's a celebration piece, celebrating my return to freedom now that I don't have to work twelve hours a day. I have time to continue my music studies, write, walk, relax. I even have time for MacJams, yay!

I'm glad this works for you, thanks for letting me know.

5 whole tones...
Hard to go wrong there. Much music from the Far East uses similar scales. The real interest comes from the mix of rhythms, and you have done that beautifully here with those quick runs after 2:45 and in varying the rhythm in the bass, too. You could easily "grow" this number by adding solo instruments as you go, eventually dropping the keyboard entirely, perhaps. And there is also the possibility of using those very same intervals but starting on Eb and casting a second section in a minor-ish mode. Many possibilities with this general tonality. This is a very pleasant number to listen to.

Thank you!
It's great to be back, and great to continue studying. I'll be looking at pentatonic scales again I'm sure, they have some interesting properties. My study of rhythmic variation needs more work, and this piece is part of that. I'm glad you found that successful, it helps me to know I'm making progress even if it can be slow at times.

Great composition
With a nice development from simple to complex and still just using 5 notes. Very well done! On my setup some of the "solo" key strokes sounds a bit (too) hard/harsh almost as if they were in the red? Maybe just lower the velocity a little on those? (If you can hear the same, I don't know.)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Thanks for the appreciation.
Some of the highest notes do bite a little, but there is no clipping distortion so I think it's coming out as intended. The growing complexity in the rhythms used is a new development for me, and I'm glad to find that other people like it too.

Walking songs
I have long found neighbor walks to be an inspiration for making songs. Just the act of locomotion often promotes rhythm and melody.

I like the way you move from simplicity to complexity. In doing so you take the listener along on an exploratory journey.

Pentatonic scales have only five notes rather than eight.
...but they can sound very interesting. The restrictions it places on you can actually help you to produce strong harmonies. Thanks for the comment.

The plan to make something that starts slowly and builds in complexity seems to have gone well. Thanks for letting me know and I'm glad you enjoyed it. As for the tone, even a sampled Steinway sounds better than most pianos it seems.

like you I've been out of Macjams for enough reasons to put in a novel. I love this. There is an Australian Jazz pianist -Tony Gould _ who says his mother when playing the piano only played on the black notes. His father only on the white. I suspect you can take this further and I going to have a go ..thanks for the inspiration.

If there
was just one talent I could have, it would be to be able to play piano and with as much confidence and ease as you obviously have here. This sounds wonderfully strong and positive..... wonderful talent. Very pleased you got sorted again financially and are now able to continue with your music, which until now I seem to have missed. I hope to remedy that in the future though, regards M

An Eventful Walk.
Very enjoyable and engaging, it reminded me of a little piano composition which accompanied a piece of old black and white film of the Welsh Valleys. I think the film was called 'The dream that kicks'[1930's maybe] but I never found out what the music was which is a pity because I loved it. Anyway I'm talking too much again ! - An eventful walk - is full of cinematic atmosphere with a proper structure and even though it is delicate it remains assertive and precise. Lovely to hear piano pieces like this. Excellent work.
