Groove (MJCC2013)

Description
For my submission to the covers challenge I looked for a tune by Stan (Gadzooks). The challenge was his idea, and he has a wonderful catalogue of tunes. I was looking for an instrumental that I felt I could do justice to and picked out Stan's first submission to MacJams: "Groove" http://www.macjams.com/song/67547

I like the electric piano and guitar jamming on the original and really intended to cover that. What happened is I was distracted by jamming with my version of the bass line. I didn't have loops to match the drums Stan uses on his tune, so I "played" the drums on my piano using an acoustic jazz set from Native Instruments. I then used a stand up jazz bass for the bass line and began trying to match the original jamming.

This is when I sort of took a left turn. I was just fooling around and began a sort of atonal jam use and upright piano voice from Akoustik Piano. After a couple days I was really having fun with it, so I set up the drums and bass for the same length as the original tune and recorded my efforts. Not sure which take this is, but the lead piano is all from one take with no volume modifications and only a couple very tiny timing fixes. I tweaked the drums and bass over the next two weeks trying to support the dynamics of the piano.

I know the end is not as atonal as the rest, but I saw I was running out of time and just decided to end it as the drum and bass loops ran out. I considered actually witting an end that makes more sense, but decided it would clash with the spontaneity of the rest of the piece.

What I have doesn't sound a lot like Stan's, so I beg forgiveness and hope you enjoy it.

Peace

I hear the connection to Stan's but I also like the departure you took. His a soul/funk electric band romp. Your's is much more a modern acoustic jazz trio in a smokey club. Both work great.

The bass/snare intro leads into some fine, understated jazz piano that is sparse and atmospheric, Bill. An essay in cool. Thanks, Peter.

Hi Bill,
I've listened to this a few times over this past busy weekend and am here with my morning coffee ready to comment ... First I just want to say how excited I was when I first heard the groove baseline which you've kept as the foundation to explore creatively with. That repetitive bass riff is how I began my version and really just jammed whatever came my way. I love the way you have taken a jazzy approach and quite like the acoustic bass and drum combo. The fact that you used my groove as the essence or the starting point to take off on your own creative journey is the way to go. Covering a song should be approached with a fresh take encompassing the musicians personality .... why copy something exact ... it's already been done. You still have captured the feel of my original especially with the bass and the the intro of the piano chords but have really shined in the direction you took it. I love what you've done towards the end. I am honored that my little funky groove was able to inspire you to create something new. I enjoy what you have done with this!
Cheers

I've listened to so much Zappa and Crim and other good guys that "atonal" sounds normal to me. I still have no idea how to do it, though! Great groove.

It's cool "outside"...
The relentless bass, the spare drums, they draw you in... I always dug a tonic/subtonic vibe... I wish I could let myself go and just solo freely and loosely like this, with abandon, but yet with a firm sense of space and place. Well done!!

Like how
this song comes out of the shoot with a unique bass bluesy melody. Almost like a city at night, maybe even a hot night under a street light and a bit lonely with a few people around. It is amazing how sound can deliver a place in time etc. Way to go and being such a great part of Macjams! like that piano jells with that infectious bass funky melody!

You must have been wearing shades when you recorded this. Very cool, lovely touch as you dance around the keys. I like how you've used harmony sparingly, with most of the action in single note melody. Kind of a minimalist beat groove thing going on. And yes, the ending is different but it's an interesting contrast too to the style of the rest of the piece.

Thanks Bill. Works for me.

This could be the theme song for much of what I do. It has a feel of calm and control, at least that's how I'd like to feel in everything I do. A beautiful dance of the bass and piano. Loved it.

You got me from the opening low bass that continues to pulse through this track. You've got a smooth jazz vibe going on here that keeps me wondering what the next lick will be...and I am never disappointed. Somehow I thought George Carlin and his Hippy-Dippy Weatherman character would have loved this number! It's all jazz, baby, and you've nailed the delivery. Cool, man.

reminds me of some of the music by er stewrt copeland - the atonal stuff is really clever - its amazing how playing off key can sound so right done in the right way - i don't do much of that very often live anyway, makes me think i should try it more.ineteresting and gangster-movie-like.Cheers - Rich
