Lyrics
You Are
Words & Music by Philip Gardner 2013

You are your father’s daughter or you are your father’s son
All that you have learnt from him will never be undone
You are your mother’s baby, the child that she adores
Your brothers and your sisters and all that they stand for
You are your education and what you learn each day
The causes you believe in and all the words you say

You’re the music you have listened to, the songs that you have sung
You are all the books you’ve read, the prizes you have won
You’re the poems that are in your heart the ones you can recite
You’re the party that you vote for, you are your darkest night
You’re all you put inside you, and the partner who you choose
You’re the friends you keep a lifetime and all the ones you lose

You’re the places that you travelled, and the cities you have seen
You’re living with your gender and the colour of your skin
You are the place you live in, the strength that’s in the land
You are the choices you have made, you are what you have banned
You’re the country you were born in and all that it believes
The God you try to follow, the ones for whom you grieve

All of this is in you, but if you believe you’re free
You still can make some choices about who you want to be
All of this is in you, but if you believe you’re free
You have to make the choices about who you want to be

I
love your lyrics Philip, they say everything about who we all are.
Very nice guitars and I like the pad synth, the Howard Roberts always sounds lovely and warm and that's a nice mellow lead tone.
Excellent song Philip with great vocals.

Nice one.
Philosophical musings, a tune that moves at a good pace and some soulful singing and playing. Plenty to like here, keep 'em coming please...

You Are
These lyrics are great! ... and so true ... you are your fathers son
All that you have learned from him (good and bad) will never be undone ... even if you try LOL. I love the sound of the 12 string ... always wanted one of those rickenbacker red ones like in the birds or Tom Petty. I think George Harrison had one. They were used quite a bit in the 60's. Anyway, real nicely written and performed tune Philip. All the guitars are working well together. One big happy family!

Happy family
Sometimes those guitars fight against each other, Stan, but I just send one to the corner and that usually fixes things! Yes, those Rickenbacker 12s are iconic. I think the Danelectro has a good jangly sound, too, and costs a lot less! Thanks for the comments on the song - great to hear from you!

You Are
Grabbed by the 12 string chime. I wanted more of it, which probably means you used it in the right amount. Great, great lyrics. Excellent concept for a song. There are personal attributes we can't change and those we can. The things we can change are what makes each of us unique. Great writing and a really sweet recording.

Philip18 said 1536 days ago (July 11th, 2013)
Hi Andrew
Thanks for the comments on the lyrics - I do like structured songs where the pattern drives the thinking. They're much easier to write :-) You could give it a go with your class - get each of them to write two lines about the things that they think have influenced them or made them who they are. A bit of fun! I remember as a teacher using a similar approach with kids, using the structure of the poem "No More" (http://www.poetrylibrary.edu.au/poets/noonuccal-oodgeroo/no-more-boomerang-0719028)

However, I digress... Re the 12 string, I did have more of it, but it started just to sound messy so I took it back to the simple line that's there now. Thanks for listening, Andrew - as always, much appreciated!

Like Old Times
Great authentic vibe of music I remember from my coffeehouse days. Sounds like a musical message in a bottle for our young'uns, much like my song, "Down The Road."

Soft, gentle and excellent, Philip. ;)

Coffee House Days
Those were the days, my friend! I did spend a fair bit of time singing and playing in coffee lounges - I should have put that in the song somewhere! I just had a listen to "Down the Road" and I see what you mean - thanks for pointing it out to me. I appreciate your stopping by!

Quality lyrics, Philip. I like the way they develop from from formative influences through the personal and then on to higher order concerns, and the philosophy that underpins them. The guitar backing works really well, too, gentle and well balanced. The intimate, understated vocal work rounds things out nicely. Congratulations. Talk soon, Peter.

Folksong...
...sung with such style and grace. The lyrics are tops and you have covered so much territory in them. Guitar work is so pleasant and clear. Sounds like a well-tuned 12-string, period, and that's a good thing when one considers how carefully you have synced all the elements in this accompaniment. A very enjoyable listen that was a bit too short as you plowed through all those words in quite a hurry. (I wonder if you could bring your voice UP a bit in the mix.) What a great song. Congratulations. Very very much enjoyed.

Thanks
Thanks for the careful listening and detailed comments, Paul - they are much appreciated. I'll have a listen to it with the vocal up a bit - I can find that a problem because I like the guitars to be strong, and know the words well, so can err on the side of a soft vocal. Ah well, next time...

You are
We are all the product of everything that surrounded us from when we were first born - our parents, siblings, upbringing, environment, and every experience we have ever had. But in the end, we still have a choice of who we want to be. As usual, you get a nice sound from the guitars and I enjoyed the music. But more than that, I think the lyrics are great!

Agreed.
All of that makes us who we are and all our choices either make the best or the worst of that. Lovely vocal and deceptively polished playing. I love the folk singer aspect of your work. It is comforting and assuring. Thanks.

It's a Hit
This is a lovely song Philip that is both deftly written and expertly played with a light touch. If your voice were a few tones lower I'd say that it was a Roger Whittaker song. The message certainly resonates with me and I thank you for the download sir!

Be well,
Doug

Song temple
Some days .. I seem to spend more time trying to unlearn what I was brainwashed with in school than acquiring new knowledge.

For better or worse, I suppose that's a part of me : )

Of course, if I knew who or what I wanted to be, it would make the choice-thing a lot easier.

Anyway, I like the way you conceive your songs, erecting a structure from a blueprint, and then adding ornamentation during the construction. With this one you have built a lyrical cathedral.

Maybe a line: "You are what you can leave behind" could have been included (if that makes sense). Yes, knowing where you want to go can help with the planning of the journey! I appreciate the "lyrical cathedral" comment, Warren - thank you!
