What a life

Description
when i was 17 to 20 i traveled by hitchhiking. I panhandled to get by. I thought it was edgy. i didnt come from poverty so it seemed exciting. i realize pretty clearly that for a lot it isnt fun at all and there is no family to lean on. In my job these days I get paid what I am worth. I understand that I will never get ahead, what ever that means. I suppose i wonder what this would all be like if we were paid what we were worth. This is not a very good discription of the song but maybe an insight into my feelings while writing it.

Lyrics
What a life,
panhandling,
what a life.

It's not as attractive to me
as it was when I was young.
Ninety degrees in the heat and a small piece of cardboard
sprinkled with change as the people walk by

Baby in your carriage
is sleeping in the morning

A warm bottle in your bag for him.
A warm bottle in your bag for him.

Plaza full of buses,
shopping cart full of metal;
mixed with the people who do
business every day.
Rolling papers
and a cell phone not charged.
Your clothing might have been given to you.

With little or nothing to do.
There is safety in numbers,
when you're hung out to dry.
We have families, we have cites,
we have states, we have countries.

we have oceans full of water and lands far away
we have two billion people who all want just one thing

some place to go when it starts to rain
some place to go when it starts to rain

I have some I love and some who love me,
I have time to sleep and time to play,
I have work to keep the demons away
some times I see the storm coming
and just can't get away
Can't find my shelter, and I am caught in the rain,
waiting, watching what i would call insane.

Money can't buy you happiness
but it can buy you a haircut

What a life,
panhandling
What a life that has been given to me

Personal slice of life
I love how you share your personal experiences with the world via song. But my favorite parts of this song are your production...seems like you were doing a bit of experimenting, but the mix of sounds really works. That repetitive piece in the background is cool and then the synths are just drizzled here and there, and really dreamy at times. Thanks for sharing!

What a life
Interesting, thought-provoking lyrics and emotive delivery of them. Lots of interesting elements in the mix, too - plenty of thought has gone into the arrangement. Good solid guitar strum runs through it all. I like this a lot.

What
an interesting treatment to the vocals, almost as if voices from the past are whispering to you. The music is pretty. Being homeless and having to beg must be frightening. Your time doing that was more like an adventure. Now, you have to work but maybe, there's no joy in it. It is difficult to be grateful for what you have but I'm reminded it could always be worse. So, this is thought provoking and engrossing. Thanks.

17 to 20 years..
I read the lyrics first. A relatable poem. Then I ask myself: how in the world would I put these words to music? ... and am baffled. Great learning experience to hear your approach. Enjoyed!

Interesting mix
... of lyrics and music, musical instruments, and styles. Despite all the electronic stuff, it sounds very natural - the synth sounds like an accordion at times. Faved and DLed.

These are
the kind of songs that just get you where it counts. Anytime a song can cause you to instantly look back upon your life and wonder "what if" you've got it goin on!

I love the tentative guitar, love the vocal work and the sprinkling of extras here and there. Really spot on great... Downloaded and will be a fav in my book!

Very nicely done!

Nice tune
I'm enjoying the composition as a whole. I like the progression and melody. The guitar sounds great and I especially like the accompaniment. Especially that synth that kicks in here and there.. the breaks into the acoustic/vocal parts really make this special. The lyrics deliver that acceptance of reality and what a way to share your experience.

Panhandling
I started off being indifferent to this and was ready to bail out and move on to the next song. I gave it a little longer and was drawn in. It sounds like you have a lot going on in this song. It all comes together nicely and I ended up liking this a lot.

What a life
Really like the understated, atmospheric opening, Tim. The subdued production and the quiet, effected vocal really make you listen carefully to the lyrics and want to know how the story develops. Musically satisfying and highly effective in style and substance. A fine, fine post. Thanks, Peter.

Happiness runs
Wait .. I thought happiness was a clean haircut?

The longer we live .. the more amazed we become at our past and the crazy things we did. The fact that a certain kind of lifestyle no longer has appeal because we have morphed into a different person doesn't negate the experience. It may have been the right thing to do at the time. Besides, about the only cure for wanderlust is to wander until the lust dissipates.

As for keeping the demons at bay .. I've taken to saying that the only things worse the working .. is not working : )

I like how you continue to explore nuanced varieties in your soundbed. Just as there are no simple answers to explain away the past crazinesses .. your music is riddled with eccentric brushstrokes.

Such a delicate and attractive piece which is also very precise as well. The touching description of what inspired it makes it even more interesting. Love the vocals.

what a life
came to this from the nod from daugrin's page.
wonderful track. dreamy, nostalgic, sad...thought provoking.
stellar mix and everything else going on in it. some of the vocals are a bit clunky in terms of space and time....but not enough to detract from the enormity of talent.
