Description
Le Carnaval des Animaux (The Carnival of the Animals) is a musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
The Carnaval was composed in February 1886 while Saint-Saëns was vacationing in a small Austrian village. It was originally scored for a chamber group of flute/piccolo, clarinet (B flat and C), two pianos, glass harmonica, xylophone, two violins, viola, cello and double bass, but is usually performed today with a full orchestra of strings, and with a glockenspiel substituting for the rare glass harmonica.

Saint-Saëns, apparently concerned that the piece was too frivolous and likely to harm his reputation as a serious composer, suppressed performances of it and only allowed one movement, Le Cygne, to be published in his lifetime. Only small private performances were given for close friends like Franz Liszt.

Saint-Saëns did, however, include a provision which allowed the suite to be published after his death, and it has since become one of his most popular works. It is a favorite of music teachers and young children, along with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. In fact, it is very common to see any combination of these three works together on modern CD recordings - a handy tool for class work.

One of my earliest posts to MacJams around 7 years ago was aother version of Aquarium.

Yes! I remember downloading this from you. Quite lovely, masterfully done. The shortest and the most interesting piece from this suite, I think.

This would be brilliant to electro-synth up I think. Maybe I should do it.

Anyway Scotty, thanks. Brought back memories of a site long since dead, sadly.

I too
remember you posting a version of this a while back. I've always loved this piece. I think I was first introduced to it in the opening credits to a film called Days of Heaven. A vibrant and pulsating rendition of this work Scotty.
Thanks you for posting it and the download.
Cheers,
Charlie

Carnival
A favorite. Beautifully rendered. Food for thought that Saint-Saëns considered music like this to be frivolous. Whew.

Yes, one of my favorites
for teaching about the orchestra in first grade. It is transparent enough that the kids aren't overwhelmed with too many voices and countermelodies. This is quite well done. Did you use a glock voice for that glass armonica part?

Great work, as usual.

Lovely
This has actually been one of my favourite pieces since I was 6. When I was 10, I had the pleasure of studying it alongside the rest of the suite - people couldn't quite understand my obsession with that particular piece.

Nice soundscape you've created with it, although perhaps a little fast for my taste. Still, thank you for sharing :)

Frivolous works for me! The music has an atmosphere that suits the theme - the light tinkling sounds are delightful. Beatifully played and clear recording. Much enjoyed!

Beautifully reimagined.
This is a delightful orchestration of one of Saint-Saens most famous numbers. I cannot even imagine how meticulous you would have to be to put this together in the digital world. Very very nice, indeed. I am impressed with your skill.
