Description
Truth is stranger than fiction.

I listened to the first couple of "One Hour Challenge" posts last night before I went to bed, but I hadn't really followed the challenge and wasn't thinking about entering until...

I woke up during the night with a dream still kicking round in my head. There was a full band (horn section, steel drums, do-wop girls, the works) singing THIS very chorus and it was sounding pretty good. As the camera panned out (yes, it was a TV show of a concert - go figure) I saw that the lead singer was none other than my good friend, Philip (Philip18 to MJ'ers). He was in a nautical looking blazer with a captain's hat on crooning away having a great time. Again, go figure. And, no, I don't believe that I have a man crush on him :-)

Anyway, I still remembered the chorus when I got up this morning, so I decided that I would set myself the challenge of writing some inane verse lyrics to go with the inane chorus and record it in one hour.

I managed to get it written and recorded in the time limit and this is the result. The simple I, IV, V chords didn't even need thinking about, they just played themselves. Same recording setup as last song. Again, singing and playing simultaneously, no click track, edits or auto tune (self-evident...)

Straight out of the Jimmy Buffett 101 songbook. Not a Techno beat in sight but there are hints of country in there somewhere.

I hope I haven't just subliminally plagiarised it from somewhere.

Just for fun.

Peter

Lyrics
Hey Johnny (One Hour Challenge)
[F] [C] [G] [C] [F] [C] [G] [F / G] [C]

[C] I'm sitting in my day job, staring at the monitor
Watching little fish swim [G] round
Dreaming of the islands and girls in red bikinis
With the tropical sun beating [C] down

[C] My boss looms in the doorway, points into his office
Shakes his head and then walks [F] away
He's [G] not a bad guy, and he won't break my back
But I'm pretty sure what he's gonna [C] say

Hey, [F] Johnny, don't you go drinking all [C] night
Hey, [G] Johnny, you know you'll just get into a [C] fight
Hey, [F] Johnny, why don't you just head back to the [C] sea?
Hey [G] Johnny, you know that's just where you want to [C] be

My girlfriend's talking at me, my head nods in agreement
While my mind is somewhere out on the seas
She's says that I don't love her and don't show her much affection
But I'm drifting out there shooting the breeze

Then I sense that there is silence and I break out of my reverie
But not in time to protect my head
A vase is coming at me and she's storming out the room and screaming
Not all that hard to guess what she said

Hey, Johnny, don't you go drinking all night
Hey, Johnny, you know you'll just get into a fight
Hey, Johnny, why don't you just head back to the sea?
Hey Johnny, you know that's just where you want to be

FIRSTIES!
Yay! What a great job, man! A happy little jaunt, very much in the Buffet tradition! Catchy tune with a great hook!

A homage
Thanks, Phil. I do sing a fair bit of early Jimmy round the campfire so it wasn't that hard to knock up a homage, especially when the chorus was already floating in my head. I only had time to sing the song a few times after I had got through tidying up the lyrics before I pushed record, so the enunciation of some of the words needs a bit of work - but it was just a bit of fun and seeing if I could meet the time limit, really. I appreciate you dropping by! Regards, Peter.

On the head
You hit the nail on the head, Sam. This is my ode to a huge "Parrothead" crowd. The big band in the dream was sounding pretty hot, too! If only... Fins to the left. Take care., Peter.

Fun song :-)
Thanks, Bill. Well I suppose on one level I was cheating cause I had dream time as well :-) I got out of bed walked into my study and wrote down the chorus without a stutter. Picked up my guitar (I just knew it would be in C) and sang the chorus without making a mistake with the chord changes. The rest flowed pretty easily. It is amazing what goes on in our brains... Take care, Peter.

Pitch this one to Jimmy .. who knows? ..
(Quite!! Seriously!!)

Let's see - girls or horses?
Thanks, Mike. It's bordering on cliché it so Jimmy. I think I will just take a tin cup for a chalice and fill it up with good red wine tonight, instead. I might also take the girls in bikinis over the horses :-) I appreciate you dropping by. Regards, Peter.

Peter...
I think you could strum a tin can and sing into a sock and it would sound like a million bucks. Man you just have it goin on... Outstanding!

Simple man...
Thanks, Mark. It is good to have a simple recording setup that I can get happening quickly and then not have to fuss too much over the results. It worked out well for this type of challenge. I guess this is just a case of "simple man - simple dreams" :-) I will get around to recording a demo of the possible collab song I have lined up for us in the near future. This one just, literally, popped up out of the blue. Talk soon, Peter.

Hey Johnny
Now this is fun! Good to see you using sleeping time profitably. Rolls along well - I think it deserves a band and lots of singers. I'll get the do-wop girls on it, and wear my nautical gear! Excellent work, mon ami!

Amazed
It never ceases to amaze me what goes on in my head at night (and during the day, for that matter, too) :-) I think I might work this one up into a bigger production number. I might come a callin'. Thanks. Talk soon, Peter.

Techo beat
You could easily stick one in there; I did! :) Very impressive that you got this done in an hour. I wouldn't even try to write lyrics on a four week project, [I can't] let alone in one hour. Impressive!

Just lucky
Thanks, Dave. I don't usually find lyrics all that hard to knock out, so I guess I'm pretty lucky. I'm thinking of a bigger production version, but probably with a Caribbean feel rather than Techno :-) Take care, Peter.

At the bar
Thanks for the fine comment, Kenta. I might just join you at the bar! I'll be happier once I have sung this a few dozen times and just tidied up the lyrics a touch to get the enunciation and timing spot on. Take care. Regards, Peter.

Caught this at work today. Finally got back for a proper comment. Amazing what comes to us in dreams. Great job capturing the inspiration. That 2nd verse strikes pretty close to home. Great performance and recording.

Duck!
Ah, the joy of dreams. And selective deafness... If I can get off the couch I will run this into a full production number but the one hour time limit certainly sharpened the mind. Thanks, as always, Andrew.

Loved it Peter...
...sometimes simplicity in itself leads to very nice things, like this delightful romp. You are quite a formidable talent--thanks for sharing this because I've had a crummy day and this made me forget about it 100 percent. I like that! Michael

Homage
Thanks, Michael. Glad I could bring a touch of lightness to your day. That's one of the things I enjoy about Jimmy Buffett music, hence the homage. Things don't have to be ever quite as serious as we sometimes make them out. Take care, Peter.

A
wonderful song Peter and great writing. It's amazing what comes to us on the spur of the moment and for you to record this so quickly.
A very catchy tune with great vocals, you have performed a little gem here. I always enjoy your songs, wonderful work!

Just for fun!
Thanks, Bob. I agree re the spur of the moment comment. Putting a one hour limit on writing the lyrics and recording just made me go for it and damn the torpedoes :-) Just a bit of fun, though it will probably scrub up OK in a bigger production setting. Take care, Peter.

Hey Johnny
Hey Johnny
Very upbeat and catchy ... I have always found the best songs come from being spontaneous ... not a whole lot a time to dwell and over think. Sorry but I just keep seeing Philip surrounded by do-wop girls with his captains hat on ... this song works so well as is with that rhythmic acoustic style and your voice, crystal clear singing those fine lyrics, but maybe you should consider fulfilling the dream and create another version with the dream band!
Great performance Peter ... I can hear you playing that at a pub with everyone singing along ....
