Description
The kids are back in school. During the summer I didn't get much of a chance to record but I did practice playing the guitar and every once in a while I would use my voice memo and capture some ideas. This is the next song to make it to the DAW and it started out with a progression/vocal melody. I had no idea what I was going to write about. Checking out Facebook during the labor day weekend, I ran upon one of Karen's (magnatone) photos of a sunrise during a motorcycle trip, it gave me the idea of writing about a journey. I find myself writing a lot about journeys, how they relate to life, what we strive for and how we leave our trace along the way.

For a long time I've wanted to collaborate with Chris (rok41). I asked if he would take a listen to this song and see if he could add some bass. The song was pretty mediocre and Chris was quick to ask if he could add some drums and more dynamics to the composition. I ended up sending him all the tracks including the guitar. Not only did Chris add a fantastic bass and drum track he rearranged the guitar tracks and remixed the song while keeping the structure of the song intact. Several mixes were sent back and forth and finally a saturated mix was sent, the kind that I'm addicted too. Chris has a fantastic ear and he's an all around excellent musician who I've also had the opportunity to see perform live.

Life's a Trip so now we leave our tracks here for you to hear.

This is excellent ... well produced and a wide crystal clean mix. Awesome guitars well played and well placed in the mix. Chris did a great job of the bass and drums. excellent vocals John and a well composed song.

Strong chord progression. Expressive drums and driving bass (great work, Chris!). Fine guitar playing and the arrangement of them is excellent. Plenty of emotion in the vocal and the lyrics have something to say. All good, John!

The way Chris arranged the guitar added variety to the composition instead of stacking guitar tracks like I had them. The arrangement made me rethink the way I play guitar. Always a pleasure when you drop by.

Chris's mix really lets this fine, fine song shine. Epic guitars, driving bass, shimmering drums and a wonderful vocal. This is really good, John. A top notch MJ collab. Makes you proud :-) Thanks, guys. Regards, Peter.

damn, thought that was Pete Townsend at first! i got that 'open air' feel from the lyrics, music, and recording. if this was mediocre at some point, you'd never know now. i think this just made my Sunday.

Solid organic rocker. The feel and arrangement perfectly suit the subject. Big fan of your guitar work, both lead and rhythm. Great contributions by Chris. Always a rock solid in the pocket bass performance with plenty of tasty flourishes in just the right places. Great mix and production.

The Who caught me off guard but I'll take it. Been messing around a lot with saturated sounds when I practice. Thanks for the listen, means a lot.

Good to hear some real Texas FEEL again, (I've been quite absent for a while).
Chris seems to have made a truely great job.

But, as so many times before, what most of all comes to my delight is your guitar craftmaship. This piece leaves me with the feeling i want to hear more. If you made a one hour long song with lots of guitar work, I would enjoy it all way through and still want to hear more. I don't know what it is that you do, it is not complicated, it is not much, and it is so delightful. Therein lies a greatness. in my ears, you are a genius.

You know me well, most of the time I concentrate on the tone I can get out of the electric and keeping it simple lets the sounds permeate. It's been a long time, great to see you here.

Life is a trip, and I am glad we crossed paths John. When I heard your original take on this I immediately liked the progression and spirit behind it. Thanks for allowing me some latitude to add a different flavor to your idea. This is a keeper!

Construction, yes. Love the bass and guitar duo. Chris always delivers the goods. You're much better than Townsend fwiw. But the real surprise here (for me) is the compelling vocal delivery. Nice, nice, very nice.

A song is born
It's interesting to read your description of how this all came about, from Karen's photo, to your own work and then Chris's contributions and like the old song goes, they nursed it, they rehearsed it and then sent out the news. Wow, this came out wonderfully and needless to add, we have two virtuosi handling the music. A very golden kind of song (John did you handle all the vocals--i.e, the harmonization too?--it's smooth!) This is excellent, a wonderful mix as well!

I think Chris did a great job and it's always neat to see the photos Karen posts during her travels. Yes, the vocals are mine and they were tweaked a lot. Chris did a wonderful job setting them in the mix. Vocals are not my strong point and I usually will try to hide them. It's nice to have someone else figure where to set them. Thanks for listening and the comments.

Good one, John. I've come to expect nothing but good, honest chops and diversity from you over the years. Kudos to the Rokman, too. I've been playing mostly acoustic, and hiding offline, for about two years; this tempts me to strap the Strat back on. Can't do it the way you do but...
