Ammirazione LSP2

Description
This piece is didn't make it onto the 2007 album because the producers felt it was too close to another of the pieces that had already been chosen for the album. They also felt that the style in some of the more energetic passages departed too far from the characteristic gentle way the composer usually set down their melodies, and it was a little short compared to most tracks, and that it might be better used in some of the composer's film scores. So here it sat languishing until LSP 2 came along.

I learned that creating minimalist music is by no means easy if it to be sensitive, retain interest with limited melodic and harmonic content, develop through the piece and yet not bound off too quickly. As a result I quite admire this composer's skill in saying a lot with just a little. I was very tempted to break from the progression and change key but I thought that would make the piece much longer (in order to develop the new key) and really, this is someone else's compositional style who is very good at it.

I had also thought of making this piece be a collaboration between two minimalist composers (double the challenge!!) but that seemed to a) move this piece into parody and b) made it more confusing to identify who I was trying to emulate.

So, hope you like Ammirazione by _______ which was to be on the album _________.

It was very hard to keep this one contained. I need more patience to keep from throwing everything but the kitchen sink into it too soon. Or at all. Glad you were moved Bill, thanks for letting me know. Your words mean a lot.

4 notes...
...you do a lot with that repeating Cm scale bass pattern. Maybe gets a bit busy, but, hey, ya gotta go somewhere if you're not change tonality or soaring off melodically. There could even be a story behind this...a short one with a tragic ending. Nicely orchestrated, Doug. I always enjoy the thoughtfulness you put into your work.

Story
Funny you should mention that since I had no story whatsoever on this one which is rare for me. Still, your précis would fit well with the arc of the piece. Were this my work I would have departed further but then it wouldn't be an LSP, and I know that the original artist would have been more creative and subtle with their development. Anyway, this was a lot of fun to do, an homage in a way and it was a chance to learn more about what my orchestral packages can do.

Thanks for your support as always Paul.

No worries. If I hadn't been watching a YouTube video about amateur movies from space I wouldn't have heard of this guy either. And yet now that I do I notice him coming up in unexpected places (kind of like when you buy a new car and then there are many of that model on the road).

The cool
understated discipline of the opening is is gripping. The contrast between that and the explosive runs at the back end is stunning.

It has some Philip Glass qualities but I'm not convinced that he's the one. I do love your realization of this work. A dazzling piece Doug beautifully produced.
Cheers,
Charlie

Glass? Getting warmer
In fact, when I mentioned a collab between composers in my notes above I was thinking the second composer would be Philip Glass. Unfortunately I don't think I could pull off Glass without really being so cartoonish and 2 dimensional about his style that it would have moved the piece into the Humour category. That said, I do like Glass and went to the premiere of his recent symphony at our local concert hall.

As to the runs, they were fun to imagine since they are perhaps over the top for the composer I have in mind and yet I thought I needed to build tension somehow. I also have these articulations in the East West package called 'run simulators' or something like that and always wanted to try them out. They were used in the first set of runs just after the voice comes in for the second time, and the other runs were spiccato which don't flow as gently but have more bite on the attack.

I'm pleased that the contrast worked for you Charlie and that the opening moved enough without taking on too quick a development. Thanks for having a listen and sharing your thoughts my friend.

Hi Doug......
At first I thought of Mr Glass but, as the piece developed I don't think so. Too much fire and energy to come out, nearer the end.

The piece also reminded, in its development, to the theme to Downton Abbey. If you haven't heard that it is worth a listen to on Youtube.

No alternate just yet. I'll listen some more before I decide.

Great work and arrangement.

Take care.

Good instincts
There are Glass-ish bits for sure but your instincts are well tuned Paul in your observations which suggest another composer. I'm realizing that this guy I'm trying to emulate is way more obscure than I thought. I didn't know of him until recently but then I don't consider myself to have a broad knowledge of composers.

I hear what you mean about Downton Abbey's theme. There are many similarities although much more eventual development there. I like that work too.

It's a pleasure to hear from you Paul. I hope all is well! Thanks for the commentary,
Doug

Build
Thanks for the effusive comments. I have the feeling that this one will be way too obscure for people to have heard of the original composer, but as along as you like the little tune here then that's great! I actually extended the build in previous versions since I thought I was rushing it a bit. This version brings things to the climax in a way that paces it better I think.

Thanks for having a listen and leaving such supportive thoughts.

This is what I love about this challenge. I hadn't heard of Michael Nyman but a quick listen to YouTube and I now hear another soundtrack and artist that is great (The Piano was the one that came up on top that I heard). Interestingly, on the sidebar recommendations the artist that I was trying to emulate was listed, although this could be selected based on my viewing history.

I know what you mean, I think. When there is only music with no boundary. I have NO idea about minimalist composers. So the rat isn't even going to try. I do know Glass though. This is an awesome piece. What a tremendously emotional build. I would have appreciated the extra length and movement into another key, though. Just to see how you would have pulled it off.

Minimalists
I can't claim any expertise across this form either. I just remember reading that this composer had been classed by some as minimalist.

As to moving to another key, I am pretty sure that if I went there I'd really be starting to get drawn into more of a cover of the original artist's work, or at least I'd have to work doubly hard to avoid that conceptual trap. It is one of the main things that this composer does to draw out his pieces to be even longer.

It's gratifying to know that this still worked for you even in its shortened and more constrained form. I really appreciate your kind words.

I'm going out on a limb here
with Hanz Zimmer. Was thinking a little about John Tavener as well with the choral section. You mentioned film scores which sent Smokey to Michael Nyman - and Zimmer can be quite bombastic - but also quiet minimal at times. More importantly though is how wonderful your music is here - no matter who you had in mind at the time.
Check out my latest song called Polara
Doug Somers said 1232 days ago (December 7th, 2013)
Zimmer
Now that's an interesting choice. He does do minimalism and can build it up too (I'm thinking Inception) but no, it isn't him. Tavener is also an interesting choice and to be fair I'm not sure if the composer I had in mind uses voice or not, but if he did it would be in a limited way as I have tried to do here.

So no cigar my friend, but many thanks for being a sport and having a listen. Cheers Kevin!

It's nice to know you've given the guy a chance. Now I just checked iTunes here in Canada and lo and behold (due to the vagaries of music publication and packaging rights no doubt) there is no Islands album here. Imagine that. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the compilation. Some of his work strays from the style I used so you may get a better cross-section than if you had just bought Divenire for example.

Warm
Interesting you mention that as I knew that I wanted to get warmth in the intro part and eventually had basses come in but then rather than leaving them there I took them out again as the piano went up the keyboard. Such is the influence of minimalism - or it could be random.... They come back to start the second section from the warm side adding the higher strings later.

On orchestration, I used to really think that string quartets didn't have enough variety in sound to make what they played as interesting as other fuller orchestral sounds (or even rock bands for that matter). I'd say that I'm coming around to think differently. Of course I did throw in a piano and a bit of voice on top of the strings. And a bass. But still….

I hear from a lot of people
that once they hear the artist for the first time that I'm trying to emulate they tend to follow his work actively. I can only say that if you like this piece, you definitely should check him out.

Since I've chosen such an obscure artist I'll consolidate some clues, although I'm thinking that he may be just TOO obscure.

Here we go:
- sometimes composes for films and TV in Europe
- is Italian and still lives in Italy
- has had CD releases on both sides of the pond (Mark Holbrook seemed to have once had a copy of a CD)
- is classed as minimalist or contemporary classical
- was featured in iTunes festival 2013 which was a surprise for me since he was up with artists like Lady Gaga, Elton John, Justin Timberlake etc.

I appreciate your supportive words Graham. Cheers.

Irish Banjo Greats perhaps, but no
Some have also guessed Scottish Calypso Favourites, The 100 Greatest Dirges of All Time, and the soundtrack to the safety training film "The Forklift: How to Drive it Without Causing an Accident". Sadly, all guesses missed the mark irrespective of their clever inventiveness and worldly musical tastes.

When's Hollywood...
...going to start calling you to score films? I literally have no time to be doing this but I was so entranced by this piece I stopped what I was doing to add my 'holy jeeez, dude' accolades.

This is seriously well done; saying a lot with a little is like knocking over a brick wall with a whisper, but it can be done - and that wall was going down before the first minute was done here.

You were taking me all over the emotional landscape; from introspective loss and vast landscapes of dawning mortality to whispers to resolution and the first dawning of courage. Standing ovation!

Hey Rik!
You are a real gent. Holy Jeez to you too. It's great to hear from you - I know you are a super busy guy. You really know how to write a tribute - talk about creating an emotional landscape and all. Many thanks sir.

You know, it's always weird with the LSP challenge since if the piece sounds good the inspiration and many of the ideas come from another composer. That's why I try to keep my humility hat on and to mention to folks that if they like this piece to check out others from Ludovico himself.

As to Hollywood asking me to score something, in many ways I don't know if I could hack the pressure to produce. I mean you have all of these other artists expecting you to do your bit to a timetable whether you feel inspired or not. Sheesh. I appreciate the vote of confidence tho'. And if I do get a commission you will be the second to know ;)

Thanks man,
Doug

A
lovely piece of music Doug, I like the delicate piano with the string bows on the intro and then it opens up into a very moving performance that I enjoyed very much.
Wonderful orchestration and arrangement, excellent work.

Masterful
Not sure how you did this, but it is an amazing feat. Real instruments?, if so highly skilled. Like the voice harmonies. Lots of passion in this.

Not real instruments that I recorded
But somebody else did - and I'm thankful for that. Same for the vocalist. My task was to find the right articulations and dynamics on top of playing/editing the notes.

Thanks for your encouragement and for taking the time to have a listen! I appreciate the comments.

I make music for pleasure, usually using a computer to create soundscapes around all kinds of music. I used to jam with a local celtic group, playing bodhran and 12 string guitar, but I find that my technical and live performance skills fall short o... [see more]
