Description
ok, here's my take. i'm pretty sure it's obvious, but it started with a specific solo album in mind but transformed into another because i wanted to do the hard-panned bass and drums (so each side sounds completely different if you pan one way or the other).

-used Addictive Drums Retro kit
-and this little gem of freeware for the piano (played via midi): EVM-GrandPiano
everything else and mix is me DI.
the E. guitar is the Roland GR-300 guitar synth (same guitars Fripp and Belew have used--bet Roland never figured it would be used on a song like this). but the synth part of the guitar was fried long before my dad passed it to me.
The acoustic is a Fender acoustic/electric.

The panning and mention of a specific solo album makes me think McCartney. The lazy shuffle feel is also something McCartney would employ from time to time.

But all that aside, this melody and arrangement are all you Sammy. I like the vocal/guitar section particularly. The song presented that bare proves what a strong composition it is. Must have! Downloaded!

thanks man. it was chronologically reversed: the inception pasted in after the completion. the voice/guitar was the night before the lyrics and actual recording while the household was asleep. my 'mumble anything for a melody' phase.

What a fabulous tune Sammy ... You know, there is something to be said about panning the beds on apposite sides ... it's actually refreshing! Excellent vocals but the melody in that catchy Laura chorus just grabs me.
I would guess Paul ... love that ending!

There is nothing "minor"
about this Sammy. I would have bought the album or single without hesitation to get this track! You are just simply too darned good man. Nicely done.

Listening for the 3rd
time I realize that "less is more". I mean this we all know right but sometimes I find myself starting at logic and thinking... "what now!?" then I listen to something like this and think it is "so easy right!?" Lay down a beat, some guitar strums, a little layering no big deal right!? Trust me... I could layer for the next year and never get anything close!

Minor
key. very rare that i write a song in a major key. double thanks, Mark.

I got the "minor"
reference... I just extended it to the song in general being "minor". LOL It is in a minor key, but it is not minor!

Got a very "eponymous" quality to it, methinks...
... Both the band and the album (a double album, for that matter). Almost like something I might do, perhaps? :)

But I do agree that there's a hint of Harry Nilsson and it is very much a *you* composition. Awesome as always, Mr. Dixon.

Easy feel with that remote verbed guitar on right make this feel like a McCartney tune. Everything including the mix seems appropriate to the time. A great song Sammy. Dloaded with thanks!

No words for how cool this song is. I think we should all go back to hard panning. It creates such excellent separation. A jaunty little romp through the albums of my youth. Well done Sammy, I particularly love the cheesy Ringo drums fills and the silky smooth backing vocals.

Why Debate
Why debate if it is Nilsson, McCartney or even a solo piece done by Ringo but arranged by Nilsson and McCartney. It is still a very entertaining tune that should never have been lost.

well, that brought on a particularly lifting smile. i think it may be "likeable" because i did it simply and fast. the mixing took longer than recording. i just played each part back to back in one sitting and let it be done. turned out to be a fun way to record. thanks for the lift PP.

Great track
I love this song. I heard it earlier today, but couldn't comment. I've been singing it all day tho! There's also some Meddle era Floyd in there, and 4:16 - 4:29 could easily be Rufus Wainwright. Brilliant stuff!

sammydix said 1264 days ago (December 8th, 2013)
yep
i can hear the Meddle influence. seems the catchiest melodies comes when i just play some chords, then sing the first thing that comes out. i don't even think i can 'plan' a song or take days, weeks, etc. to write one. boon or bane, dunno really. thanks IP.

I second the previously commented thought that: "back in the day I would have bought the album to get this tune.." (Anticipating unheard songs on the album would offer more than worthy listening) It's Interesting to hear the stripped down delivery, from which I assume the first part grew? Fine, fine tune whose dl I much appreciate!

yep, the stripped came right after i played around with the chords, then started recording whatever melodies came so i would forget them. i pretty much stuck to the first passes and the "oooos" were just about the only spontaneous new section. thanks for the very kind words dude.

Reminds me a bit of acoustic Cream for some reason or maybe Blind Faith. A great piece though - I'm sure its an undiscovered master tape somewhere at Columbia studios :) I also picked up a Harrisonish "Deep Blue" vibe to it.

Fripp & Belew? Beach Boys? Nah...hmmm... sounds like you more than anything, except the mix. Don't usually like the split, but you made it sound great. Great laid back vocals, with your usual mastery of backing vocals.

nailed it
i think Fripp did this some time around '68 but it didn't quite fit on any of his then current projects...
...and the Roland hadn't been introduced yet. that's one HEAVY assed guitar (i'm pretty sure it's oak). i can see why he sat down to play it.
