Description
Thanks to Jack for reanimating the Lost Song Project. Wish I had the right time and gear to do it justice. Been working on the road the last few weeks and this was created in hotels, planes and airports using only my MacBook Air. Gotta love that typing keyboard and pencil tool. Oh - and the pinhole mic. Really miss having instruments at hand but now I'm just making excuses.
Enjoy this mashup of a tune - and see if you can help me place it in the pantheon of club rock.
Thanks to guitarguy1985, kevinflo and mistergoodandplenty at freesound.org for samples.
BTW - the opening 10 seconds and the title are both hints at something.

Right period
but I never listened to Depeche Mode. Honestly this really is a bit of a mash - but there really was a seed that got it started - but I couldn't manage to mimic the vocals the way they need to be sung. Thanks for the kind words though. I've still only ever heard this through ear buds. Writing from a hotel at the moment.

at first
i thought INXS, but that faded as the song went on, so not at all sure. that eerie feel carried the song somewhere else, but that eerieness was what i liked best about the tune. curious to see the results.

Another band I'm not that familiar with -
so maybe that's it! Well - the artist the got under my skin as it were covered a song that opens the same way this one does. If I was a woman I might have done a better job with the vocals.

Bauhaus maybe?
Or The Cure? The vocals remind me of Peter Murphy, but the synths sound more Bauhausy to me.

Regardless, I like it!
bud said 1383 days ago (December 7th, 2013)
Probably as close as could be expected
in the ballpark - but the singer should be a woman. Thanks for dropping by.

A woman, eh?
Then Siouxsie and the Banshees would be the obvious choice, dunno which album, though... Hyena, maybe?

I don't know much of anything about the pantheon of club rock. But I do know I like this. Musical typing and the pinhole mic?! Really?! Great result.

Thanks Andrew
the pinhole on the MacBook Air seems better than the previous one on the MacBook Pro. I think there's less internal noise. I also use distortion for effect so it's hardly pristine.

somebody
once said you could take a brown crayon and make something cool.... this is just amazing. Born in hotel rooms and pinhole mics. Love it. Still a bit stumped but the woman hint may help. Downloaded.

Too kind Jack
I'm afraid this is too far from the source for anyone to ever get inside my head on it.

I have no clue
I thought you were going for Jim Morrison. So much for that (LOL). Good job, it's hard to believe that you had limited resources. No excuses required.

I actually enjoy limitations
but for this I needed my bass and guitar to get the feel right. Oh well.

Tune
Tune style is familiar. Not sure if I could put together such a good song in a hotel room. Thanks.

A room is a room
just wish I had better headphones. Think 80's on the tune - but I guess that's pretty obvious.

How about
Rough trade? A wild guess but there are parts of the way you do your vocals that remind me of Carole Pope. Regardless, it's impressive what you can put together on the run as it were. And if pinhole mics sound this good then I wonder why I spent .... Never mind. Great song Kevin. Two thumbs up plus two toes for overcoming travel adversity!

Carole Pope - totally forgot about her
and Rough Trade is a good guess - but Factory might be closer, though not it. Last hint - Island Records.

No even going to venture a guess, although I was going to say The Cure as well. Seemed befittingly shoe-gazey and melancholic. Love the digital delayed distortion at the end!

The Cure is as good a guess as any. When do I reveal the convoluted source of inspiration?

wild guess
Grace Jones? Island Life/ Nightclubbing LP
Or even wilder, Marianne Faithful Broken English LP?
You vox throws us off. A sort of dreamy Ian Curtis
Good track BTW
cheers

ding - ding - ding - we have a winner!
I started this tune without an artist in mind since I didn't have my instruments to work with - I didn't feel in control. Once I laid down the opening bass and drums I heard elements of Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug" - but more dance club vibe. Grace Jones covered the song on her album Warm Leatherette - albeit much faster. I tried to capture her vocal style - but eventually gave up. I'm not Jamaican or a woman. So I figured I would hint to the source in the lyrics. Molly is the new club name for Ecstasy. Also - the Roxy version of Love is the Drug opens with footsteps and a car starting up. So much for the inner working of my brain on the road. Thanks to all who dropped by and listened - and to the other participants in the challenge. There is some really awesome music that came out of it.

Yay!!
Is there a prize...apart from the free download?? :-)
It was the Island records clue gave it away. I'm not sure I would have got it otherwise...though I did have an inkling from the funky sort of Sly and Robbie groove
Good track Bud
cheers

If I had more time and resources
I would have emphasized the Sly and Robbie element more. My new computer has none of my old drum programs on it and without my bass I find it hard to dig a deep groove. Figured Island Records would be the final hint for someone. Thanks for digging the tune.

ah man
this along with that art work, this sank in deep this is the bud that speaks to me the only thing I know about Molly is that it can be a reference to the drug ecstasy this rolled along love the drums on this!

Hey Tim
Yep - Molly is ecstasy - and unfortunately she turned deadly this summer for a few kids at a concert up here outside in the heat and sun. Dangerous stuff - thought to be safe and very popular with club kids - again. Like it ever went away. Very sad. Thanks for dropping by.

Whatever the year...or genre
...this is still a cool track with all sorts of interesting instrumentation to accompany your vocal. That you create this kind of music on-the-fly so to speak is really remarkable. You seem so comfortable with your toys and put them to excellent use here. Nice one, Bud.
