Description
Homestead is a song that started out simple enough, sufficiently conveyed by the storyteller with just a guitar and a harmonica. But, I’ve always wondered how it would sound with more instrumentation and background vocals. MacJams is the best place to find out. I sent a ragged track to Neil Porter, Guy Groves, Roxylee, and Scott Fugate hoping they would help me out here, and they were all as gracious as ever. They’ve contributed to my songs in the past, and have performed some pretty amazing transformations on them.
Guy hooked me up with John Kaplan, who provided a nice banjo track, which was perfect for this song. John is fairly new to this concept of global collaboration, and got a good taste of it here. I hope we get to work together again. Neil enfolded us with a warm bass track, and Scott gave us a fine beat to mosey by, (maybe mosey is the wrong word when following bear tracks.) Guy and I handled the acoustic guitars, and Roxy graced us with her angelic harmonies.
It’s quite an honor to be a part of this music community, and to work with such talented people. I hope everyone enjoys our song. Peace. Terry

Terry Pearson (davisamerica2): Vocal, organ, guitar, harmonica
Roxanne Smith (Roxylee): Harmony back ground vocals
John Kaplan: Banjo
Guy Groves (Guygrooves): Guitar
Scott Fugate (scofugate): Drums, tamborine
Neil Porter (Jiguma): Bass, Mixing/Mastering

Lyrics
Homestead

Just over that hill there I shot me a bear
Had a head like a boulder, stood ten foot, I swear
He came down off the mountain, must have been early June
I’d planted the cotton by the light of the moon

The horses got nervous as he stunk up the farm
Ol’ Boots got to hollerin’, then he took for the barn
I grabbed my rifle and prepared for the hunt
And I whispered to the All Mighty, “You can come if you want”

I crept ‘cross the meadow ‘neath that big yellow moon
I had no trouble seein’, it was bright as high noon
All the crickets were speechless, I didn’t hear a peep
And I followed their example, and silenced my feet

I could tell you I’m fearless, and what I did was so brave
Like David and Goliath, I’m prepared for the grave
But my bones were tremblin’ like the tracks ‘neath a train
That had lost its sole brakeman down a mountain of pain

There are things in this world that we can’t overcome
It’s a shame we don’t know ‘em till we’ve lost or till we’ve won
But I tracked down that varmit and I blowed off his head
And life’s a little easier now. I thank God he’s dead!

I built this here homestead and I pray I’ll get old
But there’s times when this old cabin here just won’t fight the cold

Hate to use a cliche but, "The more, the merrier!"
The possibilities for a song just go wild the more artists you have on it. They all have their special signature, and even the originator is surprised. Thanks for listening, Chris, and for the kind words. T

Thanks!
I had a blast turning a 3/4 into a 6/8 feel here.
I did not play to a click here, so I hope I didn't sway to much for you guys. I should have scrolled all the way down on the email..HA.

I think that lack of a click worked in our favor here, Scott.
Automation is sometimes hard to disguise, and we definitely wanted a natural, spontaneous feel here. I love this beat! You couldn't have picked a better one. Thanks for lending us your talent again, Scott.

Wonderfully warm sound you've ended up with. Everyone has added something important. The vocal sits front and centre, as it should. The banjo adds great character. As you said, the MacJams community can produce some very fine music together.

Love it here!
Yeah, I think Macjams is like one big universal band, with unlimited versatility. It's really a blessing to be part of it. The only agenda here is an artist's desire to share what's important to him. This is heart stuff. Thanks for the comments, Phillip, and for tuning in. T

All-star lineup...
... of MacJams' favorites. Cool. Nice to see Roxylee's name pop up, been a while it seems.

Americana classic. Such a rich, full sound. Dang. Terry nice writing and singing, yes indeed.

Joe - love your banjo, enveloped by Terry's sweet keyboards.

Last but not least - Scott, Neil, and Guy G. filling out this great tune. Kudos to all, and thanks for taking the time to do this. A real pleasure to listen to.

Very lucky, indeed, to have this crew join me!
And yes, we don't want to let Roxy sit idle for too long. She's added so much to several of my songs. Beautiful voice! First time to have a banjo in my song. Grateful to have John play along for us. Love this band! Great musicians, every one! Thanks for the comments.
