Description
I was away on an 8-day fishing trip to the Spencer Gulf in South Australia recently with a couple of long-time mates.

Day Three was a complete washout. It rained non-stop all day and the wind made sure it was in evidence as well.

Luckily I had a guitar along (my trusty 1982 Maton) and we had plenty of red wine to keep our spirits up. We couldn’t see the sun, so we had to guess when it was up over the yardarm to allow the bar to open. My guess is that our guess was a bit early... ☺

Anyway, this song resulted.

I invited Philip and “Howard” along for some lead work, and, as always, they produced.

The recording is an unedited take using my self-made 000 (with LR Baggs Lyric) and a Shure SM58 through my Fishman Loudbox Performer acoustic amp (Xmas present to myself ☺) into Logic X. The sound I can get out of this simple pick up, plug in and sing/play setup is pretty good (IMHO). There is a bit of low level noise but I think it provides a realistic account of what the amp, and I, sound like “live”. I couldn’t be happier with the amp.

See what you make of it.

Thanks!

Peter ☺

P.S. We caught plenty of King George Whiting, squid, blue swimmer crabs and the like on the other days. It was a great trip.

Another Day - Peter Bowen (February 2014) CAPO III

[Dm7] [Csus2] [Fmaj7] [Cmaj7]
[Dm7][G] [C][F] [Dm7][G] [C]

[Dm7] Rain is tumbling [Cusus2] from the sky,
But [Fma7] it ain't bothering [Cmaj7] me
I'm [Dm7] passing [G] time with a [C] glass of [Am] wine
To [Dm7] maintain my joie de [G] vivre

The [Dm7] sun will soon re[Csus2]claim the sky
And [Fmaj7] come back out to [Cmaj7] play
I'm [Dm7] feeling [G] fine and I [C] ain't got [Am] time
For [Dm7] worrying my [G] life [C] away

[Em] Whenever the [Am] four winds blow, well
They [Dm7] won't be hurrying [G] me
[Em] As long as I'm with good [Am] company
And I’m [D9] living by the [G7] sea
Yes, I'm [Dm7] feeling [G] fine and I [C] ain't got [Am] time
For [Dm7] worrying my [G] life [C] away

[Cm] Storm clouds [G/C] formin’
[Fmaj7] Rain drops [Cmaj7] fallin’
The [Am] world out[G]side is [Fmaj7] grey
But I’m [Dm7] warm in[G]side
Guitar a[C]long for the [F] ride
With [Dmadd9/A] plenty of time to [E7] play
[Dm7] Tomorrow is a[G]nother [C] day

[Dm7] [Csus2] [Fmaj7] [Cmaj7]
[Dm7][G] [C][F] [Dm7] [G]
[Dm7] [Csus2] [Fmaj7] [Cmaj7]
[Dm7][G] [C][F] [Dm7][G] [C]

[Em] Whenever the [Am] four winds blow, well
They [Dm7] won't be hurrying [G] me
[Em] As long as I'm with good [Am] company
And [D9] living by the [G7] sea
Yes, I'm [Dm7] feeling [G] fine and I [C] ain't got [Am] time
For [Dm7] worrying my [G] life [C] away
You know, I’m [Dm7] feeling [G] fine, got this [C] glass of [Am] wine
And [Dm7] plenty of [G] time to [C] play
Yeah, I’m [Dm7] feeling [G] fine, I’ll get a[C]cross the [Am] line
[Dm7] Tomorrow is a[G]nother [C] day [G][C]

Hey Peter, Philip
Love this as I love all your work. The only nit I might make and its a minor thing is that the lead sounds like its in a different sound plane than the rest of the tune. I think its the echo. But again... I could still listen about a 1000 times and still enjoy the tune as much as the last time!

Nicely done!

A musical lubricant...
Hey Mark, thanks for your kind words again. I was just fiddling around and the whole chord progression riff just fell into place. Red wine always has been a fine musical lubricant. And, yeah, I tend to agree with you re the solo. I thought I had it placed well but now I know I could have got it in there a bit better. Talk soon, Peter.

Fun song
Thanks, KC. It is a fun little song to play and sing. Once the guitar chord riffs are in muscle memory they just roll out easily without a lot of thought. Take care, Peter.

I really like these performances, off the cuff. Joyful melody and uplifting lyrics really show your state of mind when this was written. Philip's wonderful solo work really fits the bill here as well, lovely post fellas.

Virtually live...
Thanks, Chris. I do like posting songs that truly represent how they would sound when I play them live as a solo singer/songwriter. Lucky Philip and Howie just happened to be in the audience :-) Take care, Peter.

Good for the soul
Very kind words, Bob. I am really happy with the way my self-made 000 sounds through my new acoustic amp via the Baggs Lyric. It makes me want to connect and just play all the time. And that has to be good for the soul. Take care, Peter.

"Self made"
It always makes me feel inadequate when you mention that Peter. A very enjoyable post, with your typical clean and precise playing and singing contributing to the satisfying feel.
Despite our location, I've never really grown to like fishing, but if bad weather and red wine help produce this, maybe I could give it a try.
Cheers from "up north".

A fantastic experience
Thanks, Neil. With the right teacher, making an acoustic guitar requires patience and attention to detail but not too much pre-existing woodworking skill. It was a fantastic experience. I do a lot of fishing with guys who know how to fish. We generally do very well. Like most things it is an acquired skill. Being in the right place with the right bait at the right time, and using the right rods and tackle makes a huge difference. Take care, Peter.

My God Peter you're on a roll these days. This is something I would hear at some of the folk festivals here in the summer ... real strong songwriting and you keep on growing as a musician and a songwriter. Great picking ... strong vocals and Philips solo is tonally tasteful ... what a feel good song!
