Description:
Here is another audio collage for you... it was created in a similar way that my "scrap skippin'" tune was. This one shimmers in the middle (gets a little creepy) and rocks on the way out. (I know there is a little distortion/peaking going on).

Rich Textures &mdash 03/10/05 - 06:47:17 PM
The bass drum caught my attention at first, so rich and
thumpy which I usually have a hard time achieving. You
got some weird peaks and pops but I'll assume you knew
that already, from your description. The one thing that I
felt were lacking in this song was cohesiveness, it seems
to jump from place to place without any sort of transition
or interlude. My only other objection is that the three
note trumpet line gets a little repetitive. Excellent work
over all. My fav abstract type song, I don't usually get
into them.

Yeah, I go back and forth about the repetitive nature of that sampled
loop... for the most part, I like it... but sometimes I am not sure. Thanks
for the honest criticism.

i could get into this on a level much deeper than
'scrap skippin'- this is a nice evolution! it is a little
schizo , but i like that. when the elements of the
song get totally scattered, there is still a collusion.
uh.... yeah!
great piece!

Thanks, E... after making so many loud tunes, I wanted to explore
silence with this one...

Interesting stuff &mdash 03/10/05 - 09:01:54 PM
This is really cool... I especially liked the rock out ending
with the funk guitar riff.

oooh &mdash 03/11/05 - 02:50:10 AM
the more one listens to this, the better it gets.
A strange mix of elements, that create a weird texture
and feel./sound. I agree with Iseae, that the horn is
repeated a little too often, but overall, it doesnt distract
one too much... great bass drum intro as well...

I like it

Random acts... &mdash 03/11/05 - 07:21:20 AM
You have managed to arrange these little snippits in an
original fashion. Your experimentation is refreshing and
can be considered a genre in itself. I guess when you
know the rules, you can "break" them. I wish I knew the
rules, then I'd feel more comfortable when breaking them!

Urban jungle night life... &mdash 03/11/05 - 09:55:36 AM

Scattered scenes of night life in a teeming city
kept flashing before me as I listen to this.
It would be great to see this married to a video
depicting that.
Very cool track.

Dude &mdash 03/11/05 - 01:56:12 PM
That guy in the song needs to buy a new lighter already :P

This is absolutely great! This reminds me of the earlier
work of Art of Noise. Truly making music without any
instruments, just samplings of noise... well and drums.

I'll bite, how DO you achieve that rich and thick Prego bass
sound?

Dude &mdash 03/11/05 - 02:18:36 PM
I have to say that I "cheated" on the bass...it was a sample and, you
know, I don't remember where I got it from. When I create tunes in this
fashion (sampling randomly from my iTunes library), I just jump around
ruthlessly recording clips of this and that and I hardly ever stop to see
what I am playing. The origins of most samples become
unrecognizable, especially when they are just a fraction of a second. If I
wanted to use that sound again, I would probably have to grab it from
this song... Sorry to tell you a whole lot of nothing!

Plunderphonics &mdash 03/12/05 - 10:08:33 AM
At least that's what John Oswald's sample collages have
been called.
I like the selection of samples, how you've placed them in
the song and the overall mix. Very, very well done.

BTW, I think it would be very easy to get too carried away with this. You've
exercised restraint and discipline remembering the technique is being used to
create a song rather than creating a song to show off the technique.

probing the depths &mdash 03/13/05 - 01:01:07 AM
of non-sound. (ie. i like the use of pauses & cuts blended
with the more frantic bites). rich mixture of jazzy sounds,
everything seems to complement very well. i really liked
the 'ding' hits & how they gave way to the flute-just great!
major thumbs up for production-no pops & peaks on my
end

The gap &mdash 03/14/05 - 10:13:56 PM
Between iterations of the bass loop are occasionally (when
they have nothing else playing) make it sound like a
download problem ( I restarted it to make sure it wasn't) -
if that's what you were going for - cool. Otherwise you
might want to fill in with a similar ambience. Nice collage
work.

nice pic, lots of fresh ideas in the music &mdash 03/24/05 - 10:29:46 AM
You sure love to experiment in your music.

Like that fast guitar sound, this very unique.

Sounds like that women is saying angel. Not sure.

Love the sounds &mdash 04/22/05 - 07:46:14 PM
The drops, the lighter...I totally agree with packosmokes about the AON sound, and they were/are one of my favorites. They could get a little pretentious, though, and this is just fun, if a little creepy (as you say).

cool cool cool &mdash 04/28/05 - 01:42:18 PM
loved the opening groove. without the lighter sound i
probably would've stopped listening in the middle,
but then the grrove came back and i was back.

title &mdash 10/26/05 - 06:42:38 PM
this song has far more structure and intent to it than the other. What did
you do to direct this one more than the other?

And, of course, I'm reminded of what Burroughs said when explaining the
cut-up technique, "How Random Is Random?"

If you're not familiar with that whole scene, although it sounds like you
are, you should certainly check it out. It's up your area.

Thanks for the comments allsaints, I am a little familiar with Burroughs and his cronies...

I did have more of a clue when I created this tune than "scrap skippin'"... with that tune, I was just trying out this sampling technique and seeing what structure I can force on as many song fragments as possible... With this one (as well as my other tune, "wave chamber") I had a specific mood in mind from the beginning and I was deliberately simplifying the overall structure and more carefully choosing the elements that it was built from.
