Description
I recently purchased an Arturia Microbrute analog synthesizer to see me through recovery from shoulder surgery. I fractured my left shoulder but good and it will be some months before I can play guitar again. When given lemons make lemonade. Here's my first glass from the new rig. Everything but the drums are the Microbrute - except for the staticky noise under the beginning that is a Buddha Box run through the Micro's filter section. I used my guitar pedals for most of the effects processing while recording. Mostly pitchbox, chorus and delay.

amazing
you have created a tremendous sound here

did you sync the lfo's to the midi on the computer to do this?

no midi was injured in this comp
i started just jamming and left the sequencer clock set (almost 70 bpm) and uded it as the lfo clock as well.

Dark - love it
This is a great Kevin - I am sure you have plenty of fun even if your shoulder hurts. Are these original sounds from the machine or midi generated - machine I bet - it sounds thick and heavy - which works well in this melodic setup. Anyway - nice to listen too. I was waiting when I first noticed you got the keyboards. Peace/Mikki

as above - no midi
all analog single oscillator. the machine has no presets and way to save - there are no digital components at all. the sequencer can save up to 8 patterns - but that's it. there are also no digital readouts for bpm or tuning. it's the wild west.

kevin, this is awesome! this gives the phrase "lemonade from lemons" whole new meaning! i have no idea what you said up there once you started describing the technicalities of your process making this, but i know what my ears like!

i'm very excited with this new toy. i have a show to play with the new 4 piece i'm in on April 13th and have a lot to learn in a hurry. thats one reason i bought this. normally i would be playing guitar - but not for a while.

All that...
...from a little box!!!
No all you need is some dark lyrics and somebody to wail on them and you'd be all set. I really enjoy how creative you are in all of the new things you are willing to try, even to the extent of refusing to succumb to a debilitating injury. Much impressed with your tenacity as well as your creativity.

ominous
something evil approaches. i've always liked that circuit dialog sound, just haven't figured out a way to incorporate it into a tune. nicely done.

i've been a suckker for the circuit dialog
and have over used it at times. i was determined to tweak it out of the microbrute.

this is great! did you play along with the drums, or how did you sync that up?

thanks!

at first i just winged it with the sequencer
and luckily it turns out it was darn close to 70 bpm. I had to slice and dice the first couple of tracks to fit the drums. then i played along after that. i have to figure out midi clock control which is a workaround in GarageBand involving other software.

cool to put that synth thru your guitarEXpedals...
made me think of my old Roland SH101 ( without any preset :-) I still have it)
you have to make music, one way or the other :-)
cool piece, dig the weird vibe here

Only some of the guitar pedals do much
Mostly filters and time based stuff. Distort ions and fuzz seem to respond less well. Of course a looper is a looper. I like the fresh start aspect of no presets. I tend to zero everything out each time I approach a new patch. I have overlay cards to save faves on.

Hey Bud
Break something else! This is great!

(just kidding about breaking something else!!! Take care of yourself man!)

Speaking of shoulders... I had that danged rotator cuff thing and I swore I'd cut my other should off rather than go through it again! I'm sure fracturing is worse but at the time NOTHING could have been worse. Longest 3 months of my life!

Nothing Can Stop Bud From Making Music
I had a Budfest in my studio this week. You have so many songs and styles. This was no surprise, just a reminder of your talent. On my Bud Playlist it also has your Love Songs setlist and the CBGB’s podcasts. Great stuff.

Hope you’re feeling better and know that the Valrico faction of the Bud Fan Club is loud and relentless.

Hey Kev, Is there NOTHING that can hold you down? If you were down to breathing through a tube, you'd hook it up to some effects pedals and hit record. This has a very cool, dark for boding vibe to it I really like. Excellent.

Interesting groove to start it out, and that chord progression just sounds eerily good. So many ways you could expand on this idea too - hope you consider that in the future - I'd love to hear where it could go from here - here being very cool all on its own. Nice work, Bud - enjoyed!

Sorry to hear about your shoulder, Kevin. But it's apparently opened a *brute-ish* portal to a new musical dimension for you. Just be careful... C'thulu may be waiting on the other side with his Theremin and this could get... REALLY Dark. ;)
