Anthem

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I just had an LR Baggs Anthem SL fitted to my 1982 Maton CW-80 (replacing the 10 y.o. Fishman Acoustic Matrix UST I had in there).

I was fiddling round yesterday morning and this tune came about so I thought I would see how the Anthem recorded.

It is running through my Fishman Loudbox Performer into Logic X.

As is. No edits, click track, etc. Warts and all – as you would get it from me in a live performance.

Sounding pretty good to me. Pretty happy with both the Baggs Lyric in my 000 and now the Anthem in the Maton (a dreadnaught).

Funnily enough the tune sounded a bit “anthemish” to me so the name stuck.

See what you think.

All comments, critiques gratefully accepted.

Regards,

Peter.

Anthem
That's a nice tone! Rich yet bright. Neat tune that makes good use of the chord progression - your hammer offs and ons always sound lively. I like what's happening here - both tune and tone!
PeterB7858 said 1132 days ago (March 19th, 2014)
Stay tuned
Thanks, Philip. I think the Anthem will work out just fine when I bed the tone down exactly where I want it. This is really just a demo. It might turn into a song... See you later, Peter.

Anthem
The pickup gives a full, bright tone which fits this tune, or is it that you improvised a wonderful tune to match the instrument. In any case, it's going on my iPod for many replays.

Articulate
The amp provides a really crisp, articulate tone. I am very happy with it. I will spend some more time bedding down the brightness vs brittleness of the top end by tweaking the p/u a bit more. As always, I appreciate your support. Thanks, Vic. Regards, Peter.

Dial it in
The Anthem has "Tru Mic" technology as well as an under saddle pickup. The mic is providing the sound from about 250 Hz upwards. I think I will be able to dial it in even a little better. Thanks for the kind words, Dick. Regards, Peter.

Anthem
Very nice playing and picking Peter. Sweet melody and a great live performance. I find the tone a bit brittle for my liking ... I tend to favour a warmer sound but it seems to be when you play on the high register. This would be a great tone for an acoustic to sit out in a full production with other instruments ... beautiful melody and well played.
Cheers

PeterB7858 said 1132 days ago (March 19th, 2014)
Tweak required
I tend to agree with you, Stan. My monitors seem to have a sweet, forgiving treble but it does come across just a touch brittle through both my sets of headphones. You can dial in how much "tru mic" you want to blend with the under saddle p/u in the Anthem. The mic is taking everything above about 250 Hz, so I will tweak it a bit more to get it more in balance. This JT inspired noodling will hopefully be refined and turned into a song :-) Take care, Peter.

Anthem
Agree with Sonny that it seems a bit bright. There is also an over-riding static hiss in the background that pushed forward during the pauses in picking. But that is a nit. The piece is beautiful, crisp and elevating. Thanks.

PeterB7858 said 1131 days ago (March 20th, 2014)
Hiss
Yes, I agree S1. I can roll off the mic component of the p/u just a touch to tame that. The low-level static is coming from the DI out of the amp. I can't seem to shake it. Good XLR cables, short runs, etc.. But, to me, the amp's sound more than makes up for it. My acoustics sound great through it. Next time I will record directly out of the guitar into my Presonus audio interface and bypass the amp and see how it sounds. Thanks for the comments re the piece. It really is just a demo composition that I hope to develop further. Regards, Peter.

I'm not qualified...
...to intelligently comment on the guitar itself or its tone, etc. But I did enjoy listening to your placing and the general "up" feeling of this track. As a composition, I like the idea of Refrain/verse because it always brings you/me back home while allowing you the opportunity to branch out into adjacent musical territories. Your choice of chord changes is very very pleasing, too. Nice.

Anthem
Great tune. It's not easy to make a solo acoustic piece hold up on its own. You nailed this one. Strong writing and outstanding playing. What a classic looking guitar. I understand the desire to experiment with new gear but I would imagine it's hard to beat the tone of that beauty with a mic in front of it in your talented hands.

Constant companion
Thanks, Andrew. The progressions are just a mash up from the James Taylor 101 songbook. Now there is a man who knows his way round an acoustic guitar... Understated but so sweet. The Maton owes me nothing. It has been a very constant companion for over thirty years and just gets better with age. I appreciate your kind words. Regards, Peter.

Tone
Sounds good to me. For a solo performance it wouldn't hurt to thicken the sounds slightly. I imagine that this sounds will sit great in a mix, but for a solo it's every so slightly on the thin side.

Catchy
nice piece and impeccable performance Peter. Tend to agree with Sammy, Stan etc - a smidge too bright/brittle sounding for a stand-alone recording (might be perfect to stand-out a little in a mix).. but I have every confidence you'll perfect the set-up/mixing later. Inspires me to think about changing my strings.. ;)

New strings
Thanks, Alan. Yes, I think I will just tone it down a touch. They were brand new strings, too, so they probably added to the brightness a touch. They have worn in a bit already and are sounding a touch mellower. I use Elixir Nanoweb Phosphur-Bronze Custom Lights on my acoustics these days. I like them a lot. Take care, Peter.

Warts and All?
I'm sure they are there if you say so, but to me this is an intimate performance that is like having you here in the studio just getting into the groove of a privately shared number. Lots of left hand magic going on, and your tone is lovely although not as warm as I've heard from you in the past. Still, when you lay down your final version I know this will be an exemplar in the style. Cheers Peter.
