SOMETHING SHE SAID - PBGB

 Genre: Alternative Rock

Description
This began life as a jam in the PBGB Shed - Chris, Pete and I playing the basic tracks (bass, drums and guitar) live.

From there, I took it home and messed about with the basic tracks, adding extra guitar bits, keyboard bits and vocals. Fed it through Ozone 5 (my first real chance to play with it) using Logic Pro X to tart it up, and ended up with what's here.

The lyrics are typically tangential, but inspired by risky behaviour in the community. Hopefully they will have different meanings to different people.

Bass - Chris Ralfs
Drums - Peter Reid
Guitars, keys and vocals - Neil Porter
Produced by Neil Porter in the PBGB Shed and jiguma studio

Something She Said
©2014 Porter

Somebody’s going out tonight
Dressed to kill, got a deal in the pocket
They’re loading up tonight oh oh, oh oh
They’re on a roll and you’re not gonna stop it

The other side of tinsel town
Shot of Mule, ‘n a chemical rocket
Somebody’s loaded up tonight oh oh, oh no
They’re on a roll and you’re not gonna stop it

Was it something she said
Now you’re over your head
Going into the red

Somebody’s hit the ground tonight
They fit the bill, some kind of thrill, it isn’t right
Somebody’s loaded up tonight oh no, oh no
They’re on a roll and you’re never gonna stop it

INSTR

Was it something she said
Now you’re over your head
Going into the red

Somebody’s on the run tonight
Did the crime, now they’re not gonna drop it
They’re locking someone up tonight oh no oh no
They’re going down and you’re not gonna stop it

Was it something she said
Now you’re over your head
Going into the red

Jam?
More like a high quality preserve :-)

Lovely work Neil.

Tangential lyrics are very good. Top notch arrangement and performances.

I really liked the sparse yet full sound.

Cheers

Merci Dick
"Sparse yet full"is good. Pete always said that the best lineup was a three piece, and I'm beginning to agree with him. His drumming and Chris' growly bass work really well, and we're hoping to lure a keys player on board soon (oh, that makes a 4 piece!).
Anyway, all good fun in our twilight years :)
Cheers,
Neil

Great groove, Neil!
Yep, you don't want a jam like this to sit idle. Loved the music here, and your vocals sound great. Good lyrics, and had some lines that really fit in perfectly, "not gonna stop it." Very nice work, guys. I enjoyed it a lot!

Terry!
Thanks for listening Terry, and for your comment. We seem to have hit the groove on this without having to force it, which has been an uplifting experience for the three of us. Over the last months we've been so preoccupied doing Brett's great songs that I thought we might have lost our own mojo, but it seems the contrary is true :)
Best from Oz,
N

Mature contemporary music, Neil. Understated, but very tasty and riding perfectly on the groove. Fine lyrics. Your keyboard work continues to be better than you give it credit for. Quality post. Thanks, Peter.

If only I could play keys live like this. Once I start on a song, I learn the keys part and can play it - once or twice - then I lose it and it's gone until I relearn it. Not ideal for live stuff - we have a keyboardist warming up for Shed duties :)
Glad you enjoyed it.

Something she said
Clean sound, but all the instruments are working hard, which leads to a good driving feel. A bit of edge to the lyrics and the vocal delivery. It all sounds good, Neil!. Much enjoyed. And a very nice looking Tele you are holding, too!

Thanks Philip
Yes, my Tele has been a good musical friend for 8 years or so now. My second elevtric ever, and my first in 45 years or so. Unfortunately I didn't have a photo of the bass Chris used here - a custom 5 string fretless he imported from the US. He's the only bassist I know who has many basses, and I reckon the sound he gets here is fantastic.
Thanks for litening and commenting,
Neil

Wow - killer production
love the bass growl - and the crisp guitar and drums. Good lyrics and vocal performance too. This is really sweet.

Shot of Mule, ‘n a chemical rocket....
... what a great line. excellent song. you did a great job of bringing a jam piece to full development. from what i understand a lot of major recording artist work that way. excellent job Neil

Vic
This will be our new modus operandi from now on I think - a three piece makes it pretty easy to do, and we seem to be able to work together pretty well on songs. Have another one in rough draft stage already, and enjoying it a lot.
Thanks again Vic,
Neil

Kenta!
We're definitely hoping to get more of our own stuff recorded in future. We've spent a lot of time working on Brett Ralph's CD, and that will continue, but we also want to spend time on our own stuff too.
Cheers from Oz,

"Messing about..."
...seems to work out for you. I'm happy to hear you subscribing to my "less-is-more" philosophy, too. Spare arrangement of instruments v. vocals that allows everyone to shine clearly. Tightly mixed, too. Were you guys ever in the same physical space when you recorded this, or...Sure sounds clean.

Thanks Paul
We recorded the basic tracks (bass drums and first guitar) live, together in the same place at the same time. I added more guitar, keys and vocals in my own studio later.
Playing 3 piece solves a lot of problems really - there's lots of space, and only limited opportunities to get each others' way - leading to much less "discussion"!
Thanks for listening.

What's not like?
This is one cool tune. The band is outstanding. And I dig the tangential lyrics! The guitar and bass just drive this thing - underscored by the tight drum set, perfect bed for your understated vocals.

cheers....

Something
Hi Neil, good to see you back man! I caught this earlier but was pressed for time. I am impressed with the clarity of all of this - I too recently bought Ozone 5 and, well I need to spend more time with it. ") Anyway, this grouping sounds nice together - bass is full of expression and works well off the sparse, but well placed guitar. Vocals are smooth. Excellent!
