Description:
When Mungo posted “Demented,” I was reminded of the radio mystery dramas that my mother used to listen to. The piece seemed a backdrop for other sounds and conversations waiting to happen, and so I asked to do a remix of it. My original intent leaned towards a parody—something to do with a cowbell, no less.

But when the time came to record, I improvised something far different. The idea evolved to a setting for a couple of strange-and-somehow-eerie children’s songs that I had sung growing up. While most of the track was recorded in the first full take, additional vocals were added later, as well as sound effects.

The result is a montage of abstract and eerie ideas--very much the antithesis of what I’ve posted here before. Part drama, mostly maniacal. So grab a blanket, close your eyes, and prepare to be “Further Demented.”

Thanks goes to Mungo, who basically handed the composition over to me to do whatever I wanted with it, and who let me use and revise the artwork, too.
And thanks also to Alimar and Synco, who listened and offered helpful pointers here and there—and kept their sanity in the process?

Hardware:
iBook 1.2 Ghz, Behringer Condenser Mic, Mobile Pre USB, Cowbell.

Software:
GarageBand 1, SoundFonts Synth, (and that little padded room, so the voices wouldn’t follow me….)

I'm Scared!!! &mdash 03/13/05 - 07:39:32 PM
The laughter with the carousel music is an especially
inspired touch!
I'm awfully flattered and feel you've done a wonderful job
here. Even more spooky than the original.

Thanks, Mungo!
I'm so glad you liked the additions. Wouldn't have been inspired to add anything in the first place without your original track. :)

(And I've never even seen one of those "Halloween" movies, so it just goes to show !)

The little man that lives inside my thumbnail told me to let
you know he thought this was great. He's going to use it
as the soundtrack to my next nightmare.

Well, just tell the little man in your thumbnail that he has to follow the Creative Commons license information at the top of the page... ;)

The "Cockles and Mussels" songs is one that sticks with
me from when I was little and we had a Limelighters'
record around the house. Glen Yarborough's group
y'know. I really like the soundscape of this. Cockles really
are an odd little shellfish...just had some recently.

love it! &mdash 03/14/05 - 10:55:27 AM
Yes :) we had a Limelighter's album lying around our house, too....
My dad played it often..... AND it was my dad that taught me the song "Molly Malone," though I discovered that I learned the "Mussels and *censored*les" chorus backwards! Only the more proof this composition is somewhat twisted, eh?

And yes. Thanks again, Mungo, for the great soundscape that is the basis of this little dramatic experiment.

And thank you, Jim, for your comments!

Well, as far as I know, no voice actors were harmed in this production. Me,
myself and I are still alive, anyway.

I'll get back to you on 'our' mental state.... ;)

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment!

9's for nitemarish &mdash 03/13/05 - 08:28:18 PM
That was a traumatic experience. I wouldn't want to scar
small b's childhood memories with something freaky like
this though but then I would say the same thing about my
music.

Scar? scar?!
But it's only a scratch! I'm sure it will heal perfectly!

Really, though. I'd not recommend it for the kiddies.
I mean...this is what happens when you listen to "ring around the rosey" a
hundred times!

(thanks for the comments :)

Just plain Freaky! &mdash 03/13/05 - 08:36:53 PM
Might not sleep for a month. Thanks.

Really this was a very interesting and fun adaptation of
Mungo's classic "Demented". I hear this as a soundtrack
for one of those late, late horror flicks.

Great job, Mysti (you too, Mungo)!

But you know...that Nyquil stuff, I hear, works wonders for helping you
sleep....and coming up with new songs. (Just ask Mungo!)

surprise &mdash 03/13/05 - 10:46:47 PM
This was a great surprise... the addition of sweetly
sung vocals was a great! Usually you hear monster
growling or something over this kind of stuff (more
cliched halloweenish territory)...this, however,
twists your head around a bit. Well done! It was
unsettling and almost soothing near the end, but
overall a well rounded piece... now with added depth.

Thank you!
It's been very interesting to see people's reaction to this. I wasn't quite sure
what others would think of it. I'm still singing a folk song here...but obviously
with a major sort of twist!
(and i'm not very good at impersonating monsters, anyway ;)

Nightmarish... &mdash 03/14/05 - 08:22:51 AM
but in a good way. I could see this being used for the opening to a movie like the Grudge.

Innocence vs Evil is a great contrast that leads to some really demented creations.

Wow!

Usually I don't listen to stuff like this because I don't like
scary stuff. But I thought you did a nice job. I loved the
variation in it. I was very skeptical at first not knowing
what was coming but I thought it was very well put
together. It seemed like a lot of work went into this.

Good going, nice production.

I usually don't listen to stuff like this either (really!), but...

Discovering Mungo's track "Demented" when he posted it sort of opened the
door to at first considering and then trying something new and completely
different vocally and creatively.
Voice acting has always intrigued me, and this was a fun way to explore it.

1 1=8! &mdash 03/14/05 - 10:08:00 AM
To quote my favorite line from Outland, when the
drugged-up worker began imagining huge spiders
crawling around inside the legs of his spacesuit (and
subsequently killed himself to get away from them):
"Aaaarrrghhhh!" Yes, the innocent-sounding Mystivox™
was the perfect sprinkling of arsenic over this haunted
room of whispered ice cream and ring-around-the-rosies.
This is one of those pieces where I thought it was perfect
as-is, and then Mystified adds to it and moves it up a
couple of notches on the DisturboMeter! And I thought
she had the perfect voice to sing soothing lullabies... now
I'm not so sure I'd want to fall asleep when she was
nearby! :-) Kudos to both of you... Mungo, most
disturbing misuse of a cowbell... Mystified, most
disturbing misuse of a pleasant voice... you hit all those
wrong notes perfectly! Shiver... I need to go watch
Psycho to cheer up now, and go pet my tarantula.
ttfn,
Drakonis

1 1=8! &mdash 03/15/05 - 07:39:44 AM
LOL....Drak, you make me laugh ( I was going to say 'you slay me' but I
already assured chjoose that no one was harmed in the making of this song).
Mystivox™ ? Very funny. I assure you that my lullabies are *perfectly safe*
(and sane) and I don't own a single vial of arsenic (or have any old lace lying
around the house for that matter, either).

However, I may venture another submission like this one *just* for the
comments alone...as they keep me laughing.

Thanks so much for listening and leaving your witty comments!

mysti, is that you? what strange things are lurking in that
head of yours? i'm overwhelmed, shocked & cowering in
my little corner (& loving it!!) you wonderfully managed to
mix the extremes of scaryness & sweetness in the same
song. now i know what goes thru the little sheep's mind

(Well, that's one song I decided to leave out)

Another comment, _ndie, that managed to make me laugh and laugh.

Spoooooky &mdash 03/14/05 - 02:21:36 PM
oooh, this is wonderfully spooky. Definately not for a
bedtime story with those snippets of nursery ryhmes in
there.. the laugh before the merrygoround bit is
outrageous... with the sinister synth tone rumbling in the
background. then a shock with "what do you think it
means?" popping out in that loud scary way... and that
deep laugh.. man... this is such a cool track
Excellent suspense track .. something that should be used
for a film soundtrack...

excellent work Mungo and Mysti...

Awww!
Shhhh. It's only a bad dream...

But...you know what's kind of funny about all of this? If you played my vocal
track alone, how scary would it *really* be? I mean, save for the one agitated
question and the maniacal laugh, it's just a lot of softly sung children's
songs....but put a creepy background track to it and....

The psychology of music is fascinating, yes?

My mum used to sing "Molly Malone" to me when I
was small, but I never heard it sound this spooky
before! Very atmospheric and compelling ... it was
only when I downloaded it I realised it was nearly
nine minutes ... time seems to drift away and become
meaningless.
Well done you both!

(Folk song singing but different, eh?) LOL
I must have had an overactive imagination as a child. When I learned the song
Molly Malone it scared me! Her ghost was going around selling shellfish out
of a wheelbarrow, for goodness sakes!! Poor thing.

I'm glad you liked the song, and took the time to leave a comment :)
Thanks again to Mungo... for starting it off in the first place!

... but apparently not. Mysti and Mungo, you sound like Nurse With Wound, and I didn't expect I'd ever make that comparison on MacJams. One of the scariest tracks I've ever heard, even after repeated listens.
