I Hear Music

Description
"I Hear Music" was originally presented in 1940's "Abbott & Costello meet Billie Holiday", composed by Burton Lane, with lyrics by Frank Loesser. This film was significant in that it contained a scene wherein Lou Costello delivers the first known interracial screen kiss to Billie Holiday. Holiday was not too enamored with her leading man, however ("It was like French kissing a squid"). The film was the second highest grossing film of the year. In fact, a lot of people were grossed.

Thanks for listening to this thing and it's dedicated to Char and Paul Page, two very fine people.

Michael

Ah yes, that one...
I did a duet with a very talented lady on that song some years ago (would you believe George Sanders, of all people, first sang it on screen with Ethel Merman?!) but yup, there's another tune with the same title. Thanks greatly Chris! Michael

Nice
I Love the Billie Holiday story! My wife played the lead role of Billie back in the days when she was performing, in a dance show about her life. Lou Costello was not in the cast of that particular show, though there may have been a part for me, if I'd known this story and suggested it!

Anyway, good to see you back and working your magic with Mr. McPike's fabulous backing band. Good stuff, as ever Michael.

Billie Holiday
Did your wife seriously play her in a show? I have no reason to doubt it! My favorite story about her is when she was appearing with Artie Shaw's band and when they played in the South the hotels wouldn't let her in because of her color. So Shaw inked in a little black dot on her forehead, wrapped her in sheets and they finally admitted her under the premise that she was a princess from the Middle East. Thanks again Dave--I'm glad you enjoyed this as the mix was a little problematic for me (so was the key) but I always try my best. You take care now! Michael

That sounds like the kind of song Arthur Askey or George Formby might have already covered Dick, but I'll look! You're too kind--thanks once again! Michael

My sincere thanks!
Due to the horribly hot weather we are enduring here, it seems my mic arm kept wanting to lower itself as I was singing (you may recall a similar calamity befalling Alfalfa's microphone while he sang "Learn to Croon" in one of those "Our Gang" shorts), so I should have turned the video camera on for this one. You take care now! Michael

Remember how I used to bitch about the winters in Minnesota? Well now I'm equally disgusted with the heat in Alabama! I'm not kidding--you shampoo your hair, let it dry, and 42 minutes later it looks like Shemp hair or something. That's how humid and chit it is here, ugh! Hope this finds you well--you take care now! xox Michael

Much obliged to you for those very kind words. Oh the "Giant Chicken Heart"--you probably are not familiar with that creature. There was a famous radio show in America called "Lights Out" in the 1930s and 1940s and there was an episode where this scientist injected a chicken heart with monkey glands or something and it kept growing and growing. Apparently a lot of people from that generation remember it, as Bill Cosby built an entire routine around hearing that broadcast as a child. Hope you are doing well--you sure are playing well these days! Thanks again Peter.

Charlie
It's been eons, but you know, everything is so changed from when we lived in Minnesota, including my schedule and where I can record (I do so miss not having a basement where I can croon to my heart's content at 3:30 in the morning--I prefer singing late at night). But, I get one in where I can. I'm very thankful for your kind remarks Charlie--you take care now! Michael

Thanks UB!
Someone here once remarked I sounded like a singer who died 50 years ago--one of my favorite compliments (seriously!) Oh Beethoven--well, it was probably in the poorest imaginable taste, but I remember he couldn't hear much of the music he composed later in life. You take care and thanks for coming by! Michael

Shiver me timbres!
Great to hear from you TF and incidentally, I sincerely feel you have come quite a long way with your singing talents since I first heard you--keep up the excellent work there! Well, the timbre--I sometimes use it to fake lower notes, but I'm working hard on actually producing those same notes sans the timbre (anyone who has heard my actual speaking voice, knows that I sound like someone suddenly turned the bass dial down and the treble one all the way up--so you can imagine the difficulty this imposes upon me) I truly do appreciate hearing from you and am very flattered--take care now!

It's called "star quality." But I am now scared of giant chicken hearts.

Well Graham...
On further reflection, I'm not so sure I have "star quality", because it's a known fact that when I walk into a room, it's like somebody just left. You are too kind, knowing your talents like I do--thank you so very much! PS: The giant chicken hearts are actually, by and large, pretty amiable; it's the giant artichoke hearts that can really mess up your weekends--just so you know!

Wow!
Classic MJK. Might I say, "You are the aces?!" What a wonderful piece of music and delivered with your infectious flair. It's been too long since your last post, Michael. Gotta do it more often. Your renditions of the classic from the jazz/pop era are magical and always bring a smile to my face. ... Oh, and the dedication? Well, what can I say? You are much too kind. Many thanks. PFP

Thanks so very much for your message to me (and one which I'll be FINALLY returning shortly here--I'm slow Paul, very slow!) I've been very busy, some things I could live without, but a few VERY good things coming into my life as of late, that I'll share with you in private. As usual, your words and all they imply tell me I'm doing okay, and that's good to know! Thanks so VERY much! Michael
