Description
Played the first chord sequence, mumbled something over the top and "devil wind" popped out, then filled in the blanks :-)

Really a demo for this song which I am sure can arrange up, but it is fun to play on the acoustic, solo, too.

PRS Angelus (capo 3), proprietary PRS p/u and Shure Beta 58a, unedited take.

See what you think.

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Devil Wind - Peter Bowen (October 2014) Capo 3

[Dm7] [Em7] x4

Verse
[Dm7] [Em7] repeated
I’ve been walking the long road
Too far from my home
Devil wind swirling round me
I’m out here on my own

Angry clouds up above me
Look like they’re planning to stay
Too many schemers and not enough dreamers
I might not make the next day

Chorus
And I [Gm7] feel like I’m [Dm7] falling
I [C] don’t know which way to [Dm7] go
[Gm7] Dingoes are howling and the [Dm7] bunyip is prowling
[Gm7] Is this the end of the [A7] show?

[Dm7] [Em7] x4
Devil wind
That old devil wind

Vultures wheeling the up draughts
With me on their mind
Ancient drones, keepers of the tombstone
I keep looking behind

Thunderstorms in the distance
Dust storm raising behind
Too much drinking and not enough thinking
I’m going out of my mind

And I [Gm7] feel like I’m [Dm7] falling
I [C] don’t know which way to [Dm7] go
[Gm7] Dingoes are howling and the [Dm7] bunyip is prowling
[Gm7] Is this the end of the [A7] show?

[Dm7] [Em7] repeated
Devil wind
Can you feel the devil wind?
That old devil wind
It’s coming for me! Devil wind. Here it is!

Scat over verse

And I [Gm7] feel like I’m [Dm7] falling
I [C] don’t know which way to [Dm7] go
[Gm7] Dingoes are howling and the [Dm7] bunyip is prowling
[Gm7] Is this the end of the [A7] show?

[Dm7] [Em7] repeated
Devil wind
That old devil wind
Can you feel the devil wind?
It’s coming for me! Devil wind.
[Dm7] [Em7] [C] [Dm7]

Devil Wind
Good song. Crisp acoustic tone - the capo may have taken out some of the richness of the PRS but in doing so added greater clarity. I probably would have gone with the G&L for a solo - certainly the song could take a bigger arrangement (although I know you like the "man and his guitar" approach). Quality work, Peter!

More to come
Thanks, Philip. Yes, the PRS does sound a bit different capoed through the pickup but I liked the clarity and assured tone still. I am planning to arrange this up, so the scatting (so-called :-)) was just a fill in for when I sing it solo. A soaring lead break is definitely on the cards :-) Talk soon, Peter.

Nice title! Filling in the blanks worked pretty good for the lyrics. Love the guitar, and your voice sounded great. Well written song!

Starting point
Thanks, Daug. I do plan to work this one up into a bigger arrangement but I am always writing songs that I can do solo, acoustic as the starting point. Glad this is working okay in that format, too. Take care, Peter.

This
is a great song Peter, one of your best and I too would like to hear this with a bigger arrangement.
I do love this though with you just singing and playing guitar, great vocals, wonderful work and very much enjoyed.

Shaping up
Thanks, Bob. I am pretty happy with the way this song is shaping up. A bigger arrangement is definitely on the cards but it does seem to work in a solo setting, too. I appreciate your kind words. Take care, Peter.

devil wind
cool how one words can set the mood for a whole song
tight playing and cool vocals
acoustic songs don't hide anything , just a man, his guitar and a song
very much enjoyed!

A groove and a mumble...
Thanks, KC. Quite a few of my songs are based on a groove and a mumble... Not all songs need to be deep philosophical statements :-) I appreciate you stopping by, as always. Regards, Peter.

Demo
Good song. Could probably stand the full band treatment.

What's happening at 1:25 and 1:30? Are you bending forward to the microphone? Make sure to cut some low/mid frequencies there: there is an unwanted extra density to the sound.

A rock by any other name :-)
Thanks for stopping by for a listen, Vic. Glad you liked the song. I was probably just "rocking out" a bit at those points :-) It is hard to remain rock (sic) solid still when live recording a song with a groove. I will look at the frequency fix. Take care, Peter.

Split affinities...
Thanks, Richard. Yes, I do feel an affinity with the PRS. And my Maton. And my Ibanez. And my G&L. And my self-made 000... :-) The bunyip prowls! Poe would like him. Take care, Peter.

"A man and his guitar"
For me, this is just right. Your guitar playing is stellar, Peter, adding just the needed percussion as well as the harmony. And your personal touch vocal works so well and you've performed it with such intimate knowledge of where every syllable should go. Such, a big old arrangement would also work with this, but it would lose some of the naturalness you've achieved here. Great song. Very much enjoyed.

Arranging
Thanks, Paul. I am happy with how this song works as a solo, acoustic piece but you are right, there are a number of ways this could be arranged up - from subtle to epic :-) Glad you liked it. Take care, Peter.

...... a harpsichord at times Peter - very unusual (but quite pleasing) sound. Terrific vocal, and very tasty playing - are you going to be up here over Christmas? Maybe you could drop in for a Shed session?

GSB out of retirement?
Thanks, Neil. Yeah, I just plugged the guitar in and knocked this recording up pretty quickly. I really need an audio interface with more than two inputs these days if I am going to continue to record "live" takes. I need several inputs to record the guitar properly and then there is the vocals. More money... Anyway, I might have a song for the Great Southern Band to have a look at, and, yes, I will probably be Mallacoota way early in the new year, so we will look to catch up. Talk soon, Peter.

Capo
Thanks, John. Yeah, I use a capo a fair bit to get a song in the vocal range I want and also have the chords I need to do the little fills, runs, pull ons/offs etc. I like. Glad you liked it. It should scrub up into something bigger okay, I think. I found the photo on the net and thought it looked sinister enough... Take care, Peter.

Excellent writing
Dingoes and bunyips? All we have to worry about here in New York are rats, feral cats and an occasional stray raccoon.

Beyond the music, this is really terrific songwriting. I especially like those double rhymes that whistle through the lyrics .. qualified by the "too many/not enough" contrast .. and then get intuitively reinforced by the "howl and growl" of the chorus.

Pointy teeth
Thanks, Warren. Those racoons sound dangerous :-) I really appreciate your kudos re the song writing. I am quite proud of this song. Sig, rok41 and I have put together a bigger scale arrangement, which realises the song's full potential, in that context. It is worth a listen, too. Take care, Peter.
