Beam Up The Funk

Description
Funk tune from my 2014 release, Come In Funky. Woody doesn't play a solo on this one, only large group funk tune on the album without him, altho there are a few tasty sax fills. In his place, I solo on several antique keyboards, some put though interesting filters. The name comes from the organ intro which reminded me of the sound that the Star Trek transporter made. Plus, the title sounded sufficiently silly to fit the whole retro funk genre.

Interesting aspect to this recording: The original multitrack premix was lost due to a untimely hard drive collapse. In fact, all that could be salvaged was a damaged mp3 which I needed to make into a mono track to hide problems. Then manipulated the mono track to make it sound stereo. I layered keyboards to create a more stereo field. Then the engineer for the album helped add final touches. This is the one track on the album I like better out of speakers than in headphones. It was a bear to fix, and most people just wanted it dropped, but I liked many moments in the piece and, even tho its the oldest recording on the project, I think it helps balance the album as a whole. Hope you enjoy it.

Please read more about the album and projects that led up to it here: Come In Funky project page.

Always enjoy a slice of funk. Unique slant on it in this piece, Tobin. Fat sound. I was thinking it was heavily centred and then I read the mono bit in the notes... Fine rescue job. Thanks, Peter.

Fine rescue job
Glad you listened before reading the notes and then thought, aha! The saddest aspect is that the guitar solo in the end was totally washed over and lacked that crushing presence it needs. But the track gets so compresses by that time, it was forever stuck in the mix. Sigh. Thanks for taking the time to listen and read!

I've been struggling with a funky piece of late, and this gives me more than a few pointers as to how to do it right. Thanks, Tobin.

Very cool. Glad the track helped. Check out the entire album on my website: http://www.tobinmueller.com/funk/ . There's many more tracks of varying styles of funk and fusion. Others might spark something more?

Saved!
This was worth saving. Some serious funk groove happening which overcomes any quibbles about stereo, etc. The Hammond overlay just makes it more tasty. Good save!
