Description:
Third and almost final version of a song about Rock and Roll aspirations. The others are still posted for comparison. The whole point here is to illustrate how a song can evolve and improve by listening to the valuable feedback provided on earlier postings.
Things that have changed: Drums all new. Everything has been re-mixed. Many thanks to PGreenstone, Alimar and Syncopatient for all their help getting it this far.
Things to be added in the final: Screaming lead guitar, bass and back-up vocals. Rock On!
Lyrics:
Right on time
Ready to go
Ready to live your life of rock and roll
You're out of your mind
with nothing to show
For dreams of a better life
and a pot of gold
(spoken)
Oh Man you just living now
Turn it up!
Bring it on!
You never ever told me it'd be this hard
I'd have to work so hard just to get a job
and now my dreams in reach but I can't find
the one last thing it takes to blow your mind
blow your mind
Yeah
Right or wrong
Rich or poor
get closer to the gate
before they close the door
you're taking your time
you're doing the right thing
gettin' closer to the glory
and the pain it brings
Aw man, whatcha gonna do now
you ain't got nothin'
huh
Reach down
Nice and slow
Walk around....

Your vocals are kick a**! They need to be more upfront in my opinion, but what do I know :P (?) I will have to go back and listen to your other versions. Keep up the great work. [ Reply to This ]

Awesome K! Glad you like it. So far 1/2 have said too much voc and half say
not enough. hmmm. At any rate, I think we're making good progress on
this... at least compared to the earlier editions. Thanks for listening and
commenting!! [ Reply to This ]
Good Singing &mdash 03/17/05 - 09:09:18 PM
I thought your vocals were good and in the right place in
the mix. I don't like hard rock but I liked this because of
the vocal. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Z! Yes- I'm very happy about how things are progressing. I hope to have the finished version up within a couple of weeks. Besides I don't think I dare post it more than four times! :) [ Reply to This ]
Love the pic! &mdash 03/18/05 - 09:29:59 AM
Sounds better than the last one. Getting better as it progresses. I think the guitar needs to be bumped up a bit. Otherwise I like it! [ Reply to This ]
Solid foundation &mdash 03/18/05 - 09:44:37 AM
The balance on the mix is much improved. At first it sounds as though the vocals are still a bit in front, but then I remember you will be adding bass and back up vocals. I think these two elements will really energize this track! Bass licks are always tough for me to write and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction you take!
One thing I notice is that the kick drum is really high. I wonder if adding a little EQ bump to the percussion around 100Hz or 250Hz might give it some body? [ Reply to This ]

Great idea... I'll mess with that this weekend. I have some ideas for a bass part- not being a bass player it should be interesting... Thanks again! [ Reply to This ]

More water, screaming lede &mdash 03/19/05 - 10:22:47 AM
OH yes,
Screaming guitar solo definitely called for.
And I'm a firm believer that every song could benefit from
backing vocals.
Have you tried Ilona for female oohs & aahs? Just a
thought.
Will wait to download final version. [ Reply to This ]

If you like harmonies in a rock song then hopefully you'll like what I'm doing
on the next version (final?). Thanks for the listen- love your music! [ Reply to This ]
Rockin' &mdash 03/20/05 - 10:24:23 AM
Good job, like the overall vibe of this song.
Great vocals and driving rhythm. The production is tight.
Kind of reminiscent of the Van Halen of old.
Keep on rockin'!!

Awesome! My first ever comparison to the correct version of VH- I was 12
years old in 1978 when their first album came out! Thanks! [ Reply to This ]

Spitting Blood! &mdash 03/27/05 - 06:29:33 AM
Rocks pretty good but I'd bring the guitar up to make it
more 'in yer face.' Definitely screams for some blazing
guitar and another chorus to close. Has very much a KISS
quality to it.
Water? Did you never hear W.C. Fields say, "I never drink
water. Fish f... in it." [ Reply to This ]
Spitting Blood! &mdash 04/03/05 - 05:35:28 PM
Hey Alan- thanks for listening. The final (?) version will have not another
chorus but some cool backup stuff and a screaming guitar solo (TBD). [ Reply to This ]
Strange &mdash 04/03/05 - 07:00:38 AM
Okay, here you have laid down a rockin' bed just itchin' for
some powerhouse vocals.... you've got the sound, but
you're not throwin' it out there. I feel like I'm hearing you
do a demo, just getting the vocals laid down. It does not
feel as though you're "feeling" the lyrics you're singing,
though.
This reminds me of good ol 80s rock of which I'm a huge
fan and you've got the stuff here, but again, those vocals
take the energy down. And it's not you, cos you got the
chops, I can hear 'em... you just got to imagine you're
playing to a thousand screaming fans. [ Reply to This ]
Strange &mdash 04/04/05 - 05:43:03 PM
You know- you hit the nail on the head. I liked the first vocal better but it was
a crappy recording- but totally spontaneous and raw and more energized.
When I recorded this I was trying more to hit the notes rather than hitting the
emotion.
The next edition will have the same lead vocal but it's been mixed better and
I've added what I feel are pretty cool backing vocals. If I catch you on-line or
iChat I'll send you a listen for your feedback before I post.
Thanks Packo- Keep rocking! [ Reply to This ]
Great Guitars &mdash 04/05/05 - 06:33:35 AM
Love the guitars. I think the voice could do with a little
beefing up. Have you tried doubling up the vocals? [ Reply to This ]
Great Guitars &mdash 04/05/05 - 07:52:29 PM
Hey Kevin- thanks for the listen! I'm close to finishing this song- I've been
posting different versions after taking the feedback I've gotten into
consideration. It has been a true work in progress and I've learned a lot. The
next version is remixed with the addition of backup vocs and some other
things. Hope you'll listen again when I re-post. [ Reply to This ]
CHEESE GALOUR &mdash 10/23/06 - 09:26:16 PM
This song is cheesey! Probably the cheesiest thing I've ever heard. I would do it in more of a modern chunky style! Just my opionon! Or maybe acoustic! [ Reply to This ]
Huh? &mdash 10/25/06 - 06:49:31 PM
Jeez Bizz- Glad you took the time to listen to the song and all... but this wasn't a
finished product- I thought I made that clear in the song notes. Maybe not. You
might try the next one (with a little help)... probably still be cheesy (can't help
that) but it's a fair bit different than this version.
Yours in cheese. AC
