Dark Matter

Description
Challenged myself to write and record a song from scratch over 1 weekend (from writing lyrics to final mix)
This is the result - still needs more mixing, could do with a few more instrumental elements and not mastered.

Worst of all I wrote it in a key I cant sing in so the vocals are thin and strained! I need a good female vocalist to do this justice! Ah well - I live and learn.

Lyrics
Dark Matter

Between the head between the heart
at quantum level
Between the ending and the start
it weaves around our bones
I watched the stars come out tonight
getting colder
A billion points of shining light
to mark my way back home

A point in space not very far from here (far from here)

This weightless weight is all around
the massless masses
It holds us up it holds us down
its inescapable
I watched the stars dim one by one
growing older
Leave the main sequence of our sun
and shift towards the red

There is a place not very far from here (far from here)

Your universe is four percent
its filling my horizons
This tiny slice of firmament
spinning through the silence
It seems a million miles away
But I can touch it if I just reach out my hand

Unlikely to the nth degree
a spooky action
A Heisenberg uncertainty
goes almost unobserved
Two tiny particles in space
a strange attraction
Across the void to find their place
a strong reaction

We’ll find our home not very far from here (far from here)

Your universe is four percent
its filling my horizons
This tiny slice of firmament
spinning through the silence
It seems a million miles away
but closer every second
And I can touch it if I just reach out

Your universe is four percent
its filling my horizons
This tiny slice of firmament
spinning through the silence
Your universe is four percent
its filling my horizons
This tiny slice of firmament
spinning through the silence
It seems a million miles away
but getting closer every day.

All this Dark Matter still unseen
it fills the spaces in-between

This has come together
very nicely. The vocals are very nicely done. I personally am not sure I like the bass part during "A point in space..." but that could just be me but it seems kind of "bonk bonk bonk..." when it could be a little more melodic.

But overall my friend this is cool! Nicely done!

Thanks
I was going for counterpoint with the bass but I know what you mean. I usually try to stop at this point and don't listen to it for a while. that way when I come back to it I have fresh ears and I can be more objective in the mixing and mastering.

lovely. for starters your voice sounds great. i totally agree with your idea about a female vocalist, but in addition to yours during the chorus... NOT as a replacement to yours. i'm not crazy about the keys that come in during the chorus (seems extraneous, or maybe i just don't like that particular sound). well crafted and an enjoyable listen. one weekend? holy smokes! thanks for posting.

Gosh
Thanks for the comments and for being kind about my singing. Since it's so high I think I sound slightly like Kermit the Frog's nephew Robin!

I do like the chorus keyboard line but I've not settled on a sound and it's way to prominent in the roughy mix. It's quite usual for me to replace almost all the virtual instruments with something else when I come to work on a song for a final mix. When I'm writing I just try to pick the ri
Get sort of sound or instrument but I don't try to over think it. It's all too easy to really tinker with the sounds and the effects and never make much progress. I prefer to try to get the "bones of the song" recorded and then refine later.
