Summer (Promenade) (WIP)

Description
My first entry since 2013... The sad part is that I have (not) been working on this since then :-| I guess it's still a work in progress so would appreciate some feedback. Probably sounds best with headphones, where it was mixed.

This is a "book soundtrack", to go with the third chapter of my iBooks-book "Den femte årstiden" (The Fifth Season). It is a boy meets (his) girl in a summer city, Stockholm I suppose, after a few months apart. They start walking (Promenade, by Modest Mussorgsky) and talk about trust in a relationship in a world full of love's labour's lost. What starts out as a nice, if hot, day in the city gets darker and with some action at the end.

Probably too many different genres in this piece and none very original or spectacular, but I am stuck with the idea for this chapter. Could it work?

BTW, I am sorry for not participating much on MJ the last couple of years. I depended quite heavily on the email notifications it seems, and when they stopped coming and my own creativity failed me, that is what happened...

Nice to see you're posting again, and great stuff as always from you.

Jag hoppas du har en skön sommar, även i detta kalla land…lol

Sköt om dig, Kenta.

Thanks
Tack för snabbt svar! I guess I needed to get this song out of my system, so that I can start with Autumn ;-) I'm thinking maybe a piano piece for that one...

Faktiskt har jag haft skaplig tur med vädret på min semester hittills. Det är mest SMHIs felaktiga prediktioner som jag stör mig på... Hörs!

Beautiful...
- a work in progress(?) that seems complete and with much satisfaction to this listener. Very evocative recording that, I can see, would be music accompanying a story such as your book. I enjoyed this - thanks!
Henke said 861 days ago (July 14th, 2015)
Thank you Jack
That is very nice to hear, since I should really be getting on to make some new songs, if nothing else then at least the Autumn piece for the book. So, much appreciated :-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Yes, This Works
Your music was very 'scenic'.. The last minute or so was quite an unexpected change of pace and it came at the right moment.. Then the trickling at the end, well for that part, I am not sure about, but that is up to the individual listener

Thanks Joyce
Scenic is what I am after, so thanks for hearing that. And even if the trickling sound at the end could be argued for, I will take a moment to evaluate it once more. I think to me the problem with the piece is that even if it's ok for the book, it will never be the song you want to go and listen to for its own sake, so to speak... Ah well...

Welcome back to MJ! I have been more or less away for some time myself. Glad you enjoyed and still remembers my little summer tunes. So not too many or too abrupt twists then..?

That's a very kind way of putting it :-) I wish I could get the inspiration to sit down and find "Autumn" somewhere in Garageband or even Logic, but still too much other stuff going on IRL...

Actually the summer was quite OK, only I didn't spend a lot of time here on MJ, I can't seem to get the time or inspiration. :(

Thanks for liking this piece. Hopefully it makes a little more sense if you have just read the story in the book...

I can't believe it, seems I have missed a song you uploaded this summer?! Checking it out any minute now...

Effective Summer Sheen
Has all the sounds and textures of a summer morning. The bells might be too obvious... maybe not. All this works nicely and the ambience of course is what it is all about... great job!

Phantasmagorical
I first heard your opening and recurring tune from Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".
Very imaginative take off into your own world. Stunning mix.
A kaleidoscopic of sounds and imagery Henke.

Vivid and imaginative.

Summer
This is an interesting piece of music. The horn section is very cool, but what struck me was the rock section which pops in at 4 minutes or so - very unusual but I like it - in fact this is the kind of stuff I love to do myself. This is a quality piece of music - very much enjoyed!

Quality piece of music
Hm, that sounds more like the music you do yourself! But I can't say I dislike your flatter :-) My thought on this is that it hopefully works in its context at the end of the story of my book, but maybe not so much as an independent piece of music that you choose to play from a playlist or whatever. Too disparate for that I think...

Anyway, big thanks and take care,
Henke

Terrific!
I don't know what to say. A most unusual collage. I want to read the book. Sounds like they end up drunk, in a sleazy back-alley rock club!

Great sounds Henrik. Nice to see you back.

Hehe
Well I know what you mean. I guess it is a bit "unusual". Since the book is in Swedish only I can venture a spoiler..: They do not end up in a rock club. They do, however, end down in the lake water in a fairly dramatic passage (you can hear it just before the 4 minute mark in the song).

Anyway, hope all is well with you Dave!

Thanks and take care,
Henke

Hi Paul
Good to hear from you! I wish I had the time and inspiration to take part more and making more music etc, but it is still not quite that time, it seems. How about you? Any new mixes recently (even if not posted)?

Thanks for coming by and enjoying the journey.

Hello Henrik
A very provocative piece of music, very appealing.
The familiarity of the classical line against the ambient sounds is (may I say) refreshingly European. Well done.
I know what you say about the sense of dwindling emails..it's the nature of the website I'm afraid . Sometimes there is sense singing in a crowded cafe with everyone talking. I'm waiting for more. Franciscus.

Thank you
Well, it's not like the first time Pictures at an exhibition is used in modern music (e.g. Tomita, Tangerine Dream, and of course, ELP), but I got the idea of using it for this bookmatic soundtrack and couldn't let go of it, even if it was a bit of a struggle to pull it this far. I used Vivaldi's Four seasons in the Spring piece, but I have no such ideas for Autumn yet. Only that I think a grand piano will do most of the job. One day, I hope...

Thanks again for listening and commenting.

Take care,
Henrik

Reality...
The first thing I thought of was Gershwin's "An American In Paris," not at all for the musical, melodic content, but for the feeling of actually being somewhere and experiencing it as though it were really happening. (Your horn orchestration of the Mussorgsky tune around 2:40ff is really stunning, by the way.) ... the heavy metal ending strikes me as very discordant with both the opening 2 minutes and the chorale in the middle. On the other hand, this is also very much a part of the "real scene" you are describing in your music, so I guess it fits just fine...Those droplets at the end = cute. You just found 'em and dropped 'em, Who cares? Nice effect.

Thank you Paul
Great to have you visit my humble piece. I am glad you liked the penciled Mussorgsky. Somewhat more tweaking would probably help, but I am surprised I got it this good just using Garageband. Can't blame you for thinking it rather crazy with the rock'n roll part. It is there to mark a dramatic change in the book story. And I actually looked for those drops at the end to use as an illustration of wet clothing hanging to dry. Whether it fits or not is of course a different matter ;-)

Anyway, thanks again, and take care,
Henke

Musical storytelling
I've always loved this Mussorgsky and so quoting it on piano grabs my attention and puts it into a smaller and less grand space than the orchestral version. Probably much better suited to your novel which is why I'm sure you chose it. The synths afterwards are kind of ominous sounding - a foreshadowing to the darker action to come? OK now you go back to Mussorgsky in the brass, still not as in your face as recordings I've heard, but it changes the whole atmosphere to one which is dignified and stately and sweeping. Whoa, wasn't expecting the switch to Rock. It's jarring in one dimension but if that is what you are going for in the story line then I'd say it works really well.

Most important is that you have produced and posted something and got the creative juices going again. Congratulations!! And I look forward to how you decide to develop this piece.

Thanks Doug
There you have it - in words. But I think you suggest I have more control over this than I really have... I have picked some environmental and story details and put in the music, but the music and text does not necessarily correspond all the way. Hopefully the text would add to the music and vice versa, though.

Unfortunately I have neither opened this project nor started with Autumn yet. Except for one or two minor changes I believe it will stay pretty much this way, regardless the WIP flag... Too much other things going on. Building a little outhouse for my daughter to keep her rabbits in, for example ;-)

Thanks again and take care,
Henrik

Nice!
Seems like I've missed this post for the same reasons you mentioned in the description:)

I find the soundtrack very evocative. Leaves enough space for your own imagination but offers emotional cues that inspire.

The theme is an interesting and successful choice and I like how you repeat with different instrumentation.

The ending comes unexpected but without context I simply enjoyed it, wondering if that's you playing on the guitars? :)

For that nice comment. Alas, the guitars are just loops, but listening to them now I quite enjoy them myself. As long as you haven't heard or used them yourself I suppose...

this starts with a theme...
...is it Mussorgsky? yes pictures at an exhibition. and then it devolves into almost an industrial sonic landscape...profound - and then returns to the majesty but never losing the undercurrent...the squeaking wheels and then WOW!!! love the rock guitar...this is epic and never fails to interest!

Marvelous, and outiside to inside
journey for me. Half way in suddenly I was inside dreamy solitude of the composer Sibelius in Finland, then that electric guitar came in and I was out in the street of Finland walking with the people who are aware of him alone on a mountain composing. What do I really know about Scandinavia? Never been there in person but the classical station I listen to often takes me there. Just love it!
