MR. PURCELL IS HERE

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Almost one hundred years ago, Prokofiev wrote his classical symphony in a style that, Haydn if he were writing then, might have written. It was one of Sergie's biggest hits.
With my lesser talents I've written a piece that I imagined Henry Purcell might have written were he around today. But then who knows he might be writing Rap.

A revised and much improved version is at the bottom of this page:

And the video with the revised score is here:

Going baroque
This has the flavor of Purcell and a modern orchestra. A pleasant listen indeed, but who knows, if Purcell were alive might be writing tone rows or K-Pop. You're right that today's "serious music" is soundtracks.

I'm baroque
quite often Henry. But I don't mind - I love being baroque.

Mr Purcell
I don't know too much about classical music outside of a few composers but I can say I enjoyed hearing your piece.. It was put together quite well.. and I could even hear how someone might rap to it..:)

On first (and second) listen,
...more Pachelbel than Purcell, but the point is that you've laid down such a nice groundwork here, Charlie. The recurring 4 measure strike me like a canon of some sort. As the number develops, though, you are getting into the dissonance that is so often found in the Prokofiev mentioned above...so you have a mix of things from different time periods, an amalgum of things you've experienced — certainly a very good thing, indeed. (I can hear some other melodic lines - woodwinds - growing out of this track. You've a bit stuck with the timpani and horns.) I enjoyed hearing this very much and always appreciate the classical bent you lend to MJ with your intriguing posts.

Love Pachelbel
and not just his famous cannon.
You’re correct there is a bit of dissonance but I don’t hear a whole lot.
It just might be my ear accepting it as harmonious but I usually like a little for seasoning.
Thanks for the careful listen and kind comments Paul.
Cheers,
Charlie

Something like that
Grandly expansive. I envision an large assemblage of important people taking their places on a dais .. waiting for Mr. Purcell to make his appearance.

And then .. he arrives.

Or something like that : )

Nice work!

Courtly
There's a dignity and grace to this piece which makes me think of a court dance. It moves at its own pace but never plods or rushes. The variety of tones from the orchestra as they come and go in the sound makes for an enjoyable listening experience even though the basic pattern of the 'dance' never strays too far from its basic structure.

Always a pleasure to search through back catalogues of work like this!

Cheers!!

Purcellesque
Within a few seconds you create an inspiring, empowering atmosphere. Cool 'tribute' - elegant and joyful. Really enjoyed the energy and good job layering the strings too!
