Description
Once again I've not been very active musically over the past few months but here's a new one.

Trying to keep to the punk ethic...

This how it started. It's a true story. It should be read in a Stanley Holloway "The Lion and Albert " voice.

When I first went to Paris, many years ago
In a small square on the left bank I came across a show
There were acrobats and dancers, fire-eaters and a band
And someone telling stories that I didn't understand

And just when I was thinking “it can't get any madder “
In the middle of this mayhem was a llama up a ladder
A llama up a ladder, now that's really rather daft
But a llama up a ladder I can say it made me laugh

I didn't have a camera and of course I had no phone
And so I had to save my story until I got back home
When I got back to England my friends all thought it queer
A llama up a ladder lad? I think that's too much beer

And I began to wonder if it really was a dream,
If only I'd had a phone back then to prove what I had seen
If a tree falls in a forest and there's no-one with a phone
It probably doesn't make a sound and it's best left well alone

Richard Marris and me on sloppy guitars and his son Dan on drums. No drum loops were harmed in the making of the song.

Llama up a Ladder © Langford/Marris 2015

Bill the blogger loves to write,
he's at his keyboard day and night
and what he writes is mostly trite
or at least it seems to me

Tom the troll's a man malign
pouring out his bile on-line
until his mum says “Tom it's time,
to come and eat your tea”

It's heads down, no-nonsense where's my phone?
I've got to post a picture before I get home
or my Facebook friends will never speak to me again
It's a llama up a ladder it's a part of a play
It's not something you're gonna see every day
but it's very very funny in a funneee sort of way

Emoticons a brand new stage
Forget the words fill up the page
It's a way to disengage
from getting in too deep

I think maybe it's therapy
posting crap for folks to see
I don't care about your new TV
it makes me want to weep

Chorus

Mawkish memes are none too bright
sickly sentimental shite
I won't log in again tonight
I think it rots my brain

Morning comes I have to see
Is there a message tagging me?
It's not the place I want to be
but here I go again

A llama up a ladder a sight to see
You’d think it would be enough for me
But nothing counts anymore until
It’s pixelated, tagged and then it will
Be posted, shared to everyone
And I won’t rest until it’s done
There’s no point as I was there alone
Thank God I got it on my phone.

Bonjour d'Ougney Les Champs
I was really hoping to see a graphic for the title Dick, but it looks like I'll just be listening :)
Great lyrics - must get back to FB one day. Liking everything i'm hearing, although I'm sure the iPad speakers aren't doing it justice.
You really do great words and music Dick - always impressive, and enjoyable.
loving being back in France - the Doubs is really magical.
À bientôt,
Neil

Bonjour a tu!
Thanks Neil. There should have been a picture but for some reason it won't upload.... I tried several times before the upgrade so maybe I should try again.

Yes, the Doubs is rather wonderful. I enjoyed meeting with Marc and Brigitte in June and hope to make it back there again next year. Say hello for me.

I'm not sure about FB.. A blessing and a curse but the more I try to get away the more I seem to end up getting dragged back in.

Thanks for the listen and comments Neil :)

Cheers

Dick

llama-rama-ding-dong

Good punk social commentary.

I'm looking forward to the post of the pic of the llama on the ladder .. so I can click on the button that says "Warren likes this."

One of the problems is that taking pictures and sharing posts has become so easy that content quality suffers. All the more reason it's important that you keep writing and recording and sharing good songs like this.

You can take the punk out of the man...
My attempts at finding a picture of a llama up a ladder came to nothing. Which sort of proves my point about I think. I couldn't even find a goat up a ladder. My pic is just a llama AND a ladder.

Content quality does indeed suffer and I despair of the inane and worthless trash that does get posted .... .

Thanks for your comments and support Warren :-)

Shouldn't that be "Lladder"?
There's a Richard Thompson feel to this, especially at the start. Terrific lyrics and excellent production.

Llamentation...
... About Social (Media) Climbers? LOL!

Nicely done by you and the gang, Dick. A pointed and pithy musical essay about our society's current apparent obsession with social media. I guess, like most things in life, it's a double-edged sword whose value depends on how one chooses to use it.

I like to follow Ralph Waldo Emerson's lead...

"In all things moderation, especially moderation." ;)

Double-edged?
without a doubt Joe.

Thanks for the listen and comments :-)

cheeky...in a Brit way
very clean punk/pop esthetic. I think it's still hard to write songs about the internet in our lives, but you pull it off with flying colors!
are you amping up your accent?
Check out my latest song called rain
DWL said 688 days ago (August 5th, 2015)
Amping the accent?
I'm not sure. My accent seems to change for every song. I'm a working-class Essex boy (my Dad was a bricklayer) so my accent reflects that upbringing but I've been living away from Essex for over 40 years so I've probably absorbed other accents!

The song has been hanging about for a while now so it's good to have it finished.

Thanks for the listen.

You don't disappoint....
Great narrative, rockin' music with pounding bass and some snappy drum fills, too. Glad to hear you back in the saddle again, Dick. You and your mates did a exciting and exacting job on this one. (Maybe I'll try one of these one day!)

Um, what?
Lovely example of rockin' madness, a delightfully silly title to get me interested and to be truthful I was prepared for disappointment, I mean, how could it live up to that title? But it does! Having fun making music spreads it around, obviously, so thanks.

Madness?
Probably :-)

It was the strangest piece of street theatre I've ever seen. It was about 1981 and I have no idea what it was all about. Utter madness.

I'm pleased you enjoyed this little excursion to Paris and back.

Many thanks for the listen and generous comments.

Urgent opening leads to some classic lyrics. No tongue-in-ckeek here, full bore tongue poke on offer. Made me smile. Geriatric grunge? Post-pubescent punk? :-) Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

Topical top form!
Love it. Performances, mix, arrangement. And superb lyrics, and anyone with children will recognize the topical issue: you can't be sure that there is no tech in their bedrooms, despite your ever-more frantic efforts that make you feel like John Cleese playing a Colditz prison guard. Not that I set a particularly fine example myself. Ahem.
