Description
After having been in forced labour during WW2, my Father took his family in 1956
From The Netherlands across the sea to Australia.
Whilst in Holland he was a piano builder and tuner. Anecdote has it he tuned for the likes of Arthur Rubinstein.
In Australia his first job was on a Jack-hammer.
He died at the age of 59.
He was a gentle, frail man who played the violin and made us laugh a lot.

Lyrics
Long Ago Words and Music Franciscus Henri
(Albert Music)

When I was just a child
Sailed the sea of my father’s dreams
We sailed an ocean to horizons that he’d never seen
The sail that he unfurled was wet with tears and toil
He took my hand and we walked on foreign soil
But that was long ago
It was all so long ago

When I was still a child
I spoke my words in my fathers’ tongue
And there were stories and there were songs
Never told and never sung
And there were heroes’ deeds that were never done
And there were battles fought that were never sung
But that was long ago
It was all so long ago

With both our hands we throw our fate into the wind
Some say we’re saints and some say that we've sinned
If there were roads that we chose not to walk upon now they've gone
Yes, now they've gone.

When I was just a man
I lay my father in the ground
If there were answers there
I’m sure that they were found
If there was pain it was felt without a word
If there were regrets
Then no one ever heard
But that was long ago
It was all so long ago

Long Ago
Beautiful song, beautifully done. I love the way you bring something in and then it's gone. The bass around 1:56 I find hits too hard, but that's the only bit of nit-picking. Lovely bitter sweet song that is easy to empathise with.

Wonderful story, wonderful song
Sad but positive.

My dad died last year and I'm still struggling to write a song without being oblique.

Lovely words and very nicely done.

Cheers

You have my condolences Dick
Be sure the song will come when its ready.
This one took about 15 years to mature.
A person with your song writing skill will without doubt
express your feelings.

Tender vocal...
This is so sweetly sung, the bass, in particular, gently helping the vocal move along. This is stated perfectly, the vocal as clear as a bell and the accompaniment subtle, supportive, nicely placed in the mix. I love this little song and the tribute to your dad is bittersweet and heartfelt. Beautiful.

What a history!
This is touching and wonderful. Your father description touched deep. Sounds like a wonderful man who faced adversity with more courage than most of us. A wonderful song, well performed and a touching tribute. Nicely, nicely done indeed.

First Time
First time for me hearing any of your work. This is a great thought provoking song that I think a lot of folks can relate to.

I really like your voice. It's almost a mix between Elvis, David Bowie and Waylon Jennings.
