Django's Song

Description
No, it's not “just a dog”.

Django our flat coat retriever left us last month. A brain tumour and subsequent stroke according to the vets. At least it was quick but completely unexpected. One Thursday chasing a ball and gone a week later. The most heart rending decision I've ever had to make.

Although he often drove us to distraction he gave us ten years of fun and love.

I was surprised by how much I was affected by his death and felt moved to write a song celebrating his life with us. If I'd listed all his misdemeanours I'd have enough material for a double album ;-)

It all makes more sense if you watch the video (and you won't notice the shoddy music production so much!). Django himself sings on this.

HERE IS THE VIDEO

Django's Song – Dick Langford © 2016

Who liked rolling in the dirt?
Turned out to be an extrovert
Who stuck his nose up granny's skirt?
That was Django

Who stole a Frenchman's serviette?
Who had no sense of etiquette?
Who simply loved just getting wet?
That was Django

Who stole the meat on Christmas day?
Who picked it up and ran away?
I tried not to laugh
That was Django

Who chased squirrels up the trees?
Who never made apologies?
It's just the way that it should be
Well, if you're Django

Who worried rabbits, foxes too?
Took a shine to foxes poo
Wasn't much that I could do
That was Django

Break

Django had a golden rule
being smelly made him cool
He went too far with the slurry pool
But that was Django

Who made us laugh singing out of tune?
Or scaring off a threatening broom?
We'll miss you in our living room
Django

We went walking every day
Around the streets, along the South Downs Way
Always ready to play

dogs
I've never had a pet to get attached to but can sympathise it must be hard to put them down when life gets too tough for them.
Great lyrics and rhymes. Guitar sounds great, Did you double mic it?
That decent on the last but is strangely very unsettling.
Was thinking of this being a parallel song to Pink Floyd's Seamus on Meddle what with the dog noises and stuff.
I love it when dogs sing along to stuff.
I looked after a friends dog who sang along to my bad harmonica playing…well, someone had to ;-)
All the best

Before we got Django 10 years ago I wouldn't have given much thought to someone who said their dog had died. What I didn't realise is that pets become part of the family and losing a dog (or a cat or whatever) is losing a member of the family.

They have real personalities and in the case of Django he was quite a character.

The guitar gave me all sorts of problems as it needs a set up, the strings are buzzing really badly and I had to play very softly. It's an AKG C1000 condenser pointed at the 12th fret and about 6 inches away from the body. Then there was a lot of buggering about with the EQ until it sounded OK!

I'm not sure where that discord at the end of the "chorus" came from. I wasn't thinking about it when I played it but I liked the slightly odd tone it gave the guitar.

I don't know the Floyd song, I'll have to check it out.

Django would howl when he was happy. Normally after he'd eaten some real meat (not dog food stuff) with gravy. He also used to sing when my wife played sax or clarinet. I did think about Britain's Got Talent but they were still in the doggy dancing minset! You should have recorded the harmonica with dog vox (Howling Wolf?)

Thanks for the listen and comment!

Brought a tear...
I lost my 12-year-old lack lab Molly a few months back, so I very much feel both the happiness and sadness in your tune. Our four-legged friends ass so much unconditional love to our lives that it's often badly missed when it's gone.

It's a lovely tune and Django sounds like he was a wonderful friend.

Thanks for sharing.

They certainly do
bring a lot to our lives but leave us with great memories (to go with the sadness) when they go.

Django was great. He was a pita sometimes of course but he would constantly redeem himself with some stupid behaviour!

I think the video manages to catch him at his best.

Thanks for the listen and comment Joe and I hope you're starting to get over Molly.

Django's song
Dogs are wonderful companions, but unfortunately have a shorter life span than we do, so that great joy is, one day, going to involve heart wrenching sadness. Yours is a beautiful song, Dick, full of fun and good memories, but tinged by the sadness of what's happened. Love the simple, gently building arrangement.

I finally listened to it today and now I sort of understand the comments. Personally I think he overdid the dogs ;-)

Folks get very attached to their pets which is something I never understood before getting Django.

Thanks for the comments. I'm taking a lot of pleasure playing the acoustic recently so it's nice to have that recognised.

Beautiful Song
Pet's get inside your soul. i have taken the coward's way out the last twenty years and just not had one because the pain of saying goodbye takes so much out of me. Really like the subtle production on this. At first it just sounds like a nice acoustic fingerpicking piece but then you start hitting us with a little sound here and there.

Not a coward
It genuinely hurts losing a pet and it's nothing to be ashamed of. If truth be told I'm not sure we'll get another pet for that reason but we'll borrow one now and again ;-)

I tried not to overload the song with too much. I wanted to make each verse a little different and thought some small touches were all that were required.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Wow
some fantastic acoustics and your vocals compliment it well. I love dog songs, there are not enough. Happy go feel like you could imagine the breed to be, never to hard on one's self. Those howling dogs bring me back to early Pink Floyd the song "Seamus" but with that PF song "Fearless" vibe.

Django's Song
Touching tribute, Dick. Clever lyrics and sympathetic arrangement. Recording acoustics is always a challenge, and using a 12-string, well that's just about 6 strings too many :-) Nice picking. Our family went through your current grieving process a couple of years ago for our 16 year old labrador. But with some distance involved, not having to clean up the back yard every day and try and rid the house of dog hairs does have its pluses... Take care.

It's actually a 6 string K Yairi. I'm not sure I can get the crispness fingerpicking the 12 string.

Yes, it's an odd business of how much a dog rules your life. Walks, food, poo collection and of course the abundance of hair! We're just adjusting to it after 10 years of structure. It has its benefits of course but we still miss him ....

Thanks

I used to be a dog person, although now I've become a kangaroo kind of guy ;) My dad was a chronic dog-lover though, and he would have loved this.

dick - this is truly excellent. the guitar work is fantastic. love the accompaniment that joins in and the little slide down on 'ran away'.

the lyrics could have been trite and sentimental but yours are clever and objective.
the discordant riff on south downs way grated at first....but then i realised that too was uber cool.
if you didn't know this was about a dog you'd be forgiven for thinking you were writing about a person....ok except for the fox-poo reference....and i guess a nose up granny's skirt....but you know what i mean :)
the broom and living room lines - very clever....as is the way you just say his name after (like - what else do you need to say...). smart writing.
vocal is gentle and vulnerable - sounds engaging and sincere.

sensational song dick - one of the best i've heard on this site....for excellence in all departments; vocal, guitar, lyrics, construction, mix, emotional connection.
good that you missed him more than you thought - we take so much for granted....then it's gone.

I'm astonished at the comments.

I'm not sure I've ever had such fulsome praise and an effective deconstruction of a song.

I never set out to write anything more than a simple homage to a long term friend. The fact he was a dog was irrelevant as we spent 10 years with Django as he grew up and we learned to live with him and him with us.

I don't know how the lyrics happened. I picked out some of the things he did and tried to fit each verse around those. If they are clever then I can take no responsibility as to me they just happened.

In terms of the music I wanted something light and not too mawkish. Open D is always a good choice. It all fell into place and the falling discordant pattern was more of an accident but it added a touch of melancholia. It's difficult not to be honest and sincere when singing something like this but it took me several goes as I'd dissolve into tears halfway through a verse!

Thanks again for the comments and yes, you don't what you've got 'til it's gone (I think I've heard that somewhere before)

Remembering Django
This is a brilliant memorial. The video is especially fun. His personality shines through in both.

It's been 20 years since my dog died and I still miss him every day. I especially miss the morning and evening walks .. which somehow always seemed to turn into an adventure (with a big or a small "A"). I've always said some day I will get another dog, but in the meantime a spot of dog-sitting helps fill the bill.

What is it with dogs and smells? One day we were walking along the banks of the Mississippi River and came across a huge carp rotting in the sun. The odor from the dead fish was horrific - it must have been putrefying for days. My schnauzer sniffed it .. and then proceeded to roll over and wiggle back and forth on the carcass. It was awful. It took multiple baths and many applications of cologne to kill off that odor. Not as bad as swimming in the slurry pool .. and maybe not as bad as a run in with a skunk .. but it was nasty.

DWL said 431 days ago (March 24th, 2016)
Smelly!
Thanks Warren.

If I'm still here in 20 years I hope I'm still remembering Django and missing our walks every day and I thank you for that line!

Django would have loved a rotting carp but the slurry pool was something quite exceptional. Imagine a dog embarrassed by what he'd done. It was truly wonderful seeing his reluctance to come anywhere near us and practically asking to be hosed down.

A skunk though seems to be another level.

Thanks again Warren for your support, advice and the walks line.

Feelings coming through
This is so heartfelt Dick - written and performed well as always, but there's something even more inspired going on here that comes through you. Dogs are indeed part of the family and their loss is felt so much more than we would ever guess. No doubt about it. We just lost our second dog and it has been hard both times. Fortunately I think we all have the pleasure know something about the character of Django through your song - and particularly from how you put your feelings fully into it in a way that exemplifies your considerable artistic taste.

My sincere condolences.

I would
say this is some strong songwriting, both lyrically and melodically. Only one "complaint": de-ess! I played this at a nice, enjoyable volume, but had to turn it down (regretfully) shortly afterwards because the s's and t's were killing this lovely tune.

Interesting
Thanks for those observations Sammy.

The vocal patch I eneded up using had a de-esser as part of it and I've just been playing with the settings and I can't hear any difference between when it's on or off. I reckon my ears are not as attuned as they may have been at one time!

I appreciate the comments and will continue to play with the settings and see if I can get anything that makes a difference.

Fitting Tribute

I'm sorry for your loss, Dick.

Django's Song is a lovely — and loving — tribute to your mischievous, child-like, furry friend, Dick. It's a particularly cruel irony that these faithful companions, who provide so much affection, joy and laughter are lent to us for such a brief time.

Your song captures the wide range of experiences and memories of your four-legged friend beautifully and the video provides the perfect visual complement. ;)
